The Renfield introduction scene with the camera in the lamp is in my top three all-time Dracula film scenes. SO GOOD.

thank you for your intelligent and nicely spoken review. I'm British, though living in Boston now, so can tell you that the actors you pick out - those whose performances you particularly enjoyed - you picked with a very good eye. Frank Finlay and Jack Shephard are both very well known and very experienced actors. They've done a lot of television and stage work over decades. Apart from them the person who is otherwise the best known is probably the actress who played Lucy, Susan Penhaligon (a good Cronish name there). Thank you again for your review.

You did a great job reviewing this movie (just a few wee errors in the retelling of the story), it's by far my favourite vampire film of all time, and Frank Finlay as Van Helsing is my movie hero. Thanks so much for this!

Agreed. Finlay was a great actor, and he did a brilliant (if I may coin the British expression) job in Casanova. I heard someone state that the BBC "missed the boat" by never casting him as Dr. Who--again, totally agree with that argument.

I believe I saw this BBC adaption when I was a pre-teen, but (having no meaningful memory of it) I re-watched it last night and I was impressed with the performances of the cast, not just Finlay and Shepard. No actors can make me believe this story is 'real', but they made me believe that they themselves believed it was real. I did find that there were some abrupt transitions between story points (leaving me wondering exactly why characters made the decisions they did, or reacted the way they did) and I think this adaption might have been better as a three or four part series. I understand that Jourdan's approach can seem too 'romantic' and not traditional enough, but I thought he always implied deeper and darker aspects, despite the suave and composed exterior. Finlay avoids all the pitfalls of other Van Helsing performances.

One thing that’s always annoyed me a bit is the transition back into Transylvania in the final act. You hear Mina say: “only one place where he feels safe” or something of that ilk, and it literally jump cuts from England to Transylvania. Like uh, whoa. I thought they were headed out to the boat or something, but we just fast forwarded weeks. Also, there’s nothing to establish that everyone is there. After the Van Helsing and Mina vs. The Brides scene (which was also one of my favorites, super tense like you said), it’s like “oop and Dracula’s here and oop, so are Quincey and Harker”. It’s cool that we get the gun fight, and it’s really awesome that this is the only adaptation to include Quincey’s memorial service some time after his death. Problem is, though: it’s never explicitly stated that he dies, and first time I saw it, I thought Quincey was chilling against a tree in the background.

This review is great! My friends and I call the Jourdan Drac the "cafe" or "coffeehouse" Drac, for exactly the reasons you stated, that Jourdan's "menace" is the type that would scandalize at a Paris fashion show lol. But I guess propriety, or the lack thereof, is what really frightened Victorians! Of course, Jourdan is completely physically unlike the Drac Stoker depicted (you can see how they could trot out suave Langella just a few years later) but it was cool how they pasted the hair on his hands to give a nod to the book (they had to, can you even picture Jourdan with a "bushy white moustache" lol). And Frank Finlay as the Professor! Anyway, love it man - can't wait til Halloween!

Thanks for an amazing review to an equally amazing film, easily the penultimate version of Dracula to this day IMHO. One could only imagine what a stupendous classic might exist had the creative team and cast of this version had a cinematic big budget to work with , they nailed it regardless. Glad you made a real point of how this version keeps the actual story of the book intact for the most part, it has always frustrated me as a huge fan of the novel how almost all film versions routinely butcher the story and sometimes completely omit some of the most compelling elements of the plot such as the entire opening of the story with Harker's stay at the castle and his slow realization of the situation he finds himself in, a main source of tension and horror that effectively sets up the entire story, my personal favorite part of the book. This version takes what has unfortunately become a tired old worn out story into something that is fresh and alive again.

I first heard of this version when I was surfing the web looking at Dracula movies. What got me interested was the fact it starred the late Louis Jourdan as the Count, and the very first thing I saw him in was ironically "The Return of Swamp Thing" as Anton Arcane. I think I did see some clips of this movie here on KZfaq, however I never bother watching it disambiguated into parts, if was it in parts. After watching this, despite having those minor changes, it sounds like the first really faithful version of Bram Stoker's novel, which now makes the Francis Ford Coppola movie the second faithful adaptation. Gonna want to give this one a look sometime. Great video man.

I think this is the one that caused State of Decay in Doctor Who that was written during the Hinchcliffe era to be on the shelf until JNT took over and Terrance Dicks decides to dust off the story for the upcoming season 18.

This version is all sold out at Amazon. Just the same, the 2007 release was poor quality, with no extras of any kind....unless you want to count some really horrible ads that couldn't be bypassed. The BBC really needs to issue a new version with cleaned up video and some extra features.

I bought a copy online at least 10-12 years ago, and I keep it safely stowed away from little fingers, etc. Aside from quality of the DVD, there are a few production issues with editing that the BBC overlooked (I know, it was a "budget" BBC production). Nonetheless, for example, when the 3 vampire wives come back from chatting to feed on Harker, their "footsteps" are out-of-sync with the visual footage; when Van Helsing and Sayward enter into Mina and Jonathan's room with Dracula having his "midnight snack", that scene is repeated. There are a few other little items, but overall, they are just minor distractions from an otherwise excellent production, by far the one most closely following the book. On that topic, what a difficult book to actually make a screenplay--from a series of letters and memorandums amongst the main characters!

Let's not forget the soundtrack! The eerie music puts my wife ill at ease more than anything witnessed on the screen.

@@johnnebocat1397 The sparse production...the UK was nearly broke in the 70s...meant that they had to rely on good acting and not special effects or extravagant sets. I don't know why the BBC doesn't release a quality DVD of this title. It's as if they want the public to forget it was ever made.

If this version is as faithful to the book as it gets (I read the book, but a long time ago and don't remember much) then so is Coppola's version. Many Dracula scenes I saw for the first time in that film, I found in this one as well. Everyone was wonderful here but I found Jourdan's Dracula to be the least compelling I ever seen on screen.
@zaranyzerak
@zaranyzerak 3 ай бұрын
Hard disagree on Jourdan. He was a romantic leading man for most of his career and was an excellent choice at that time. Coppola's version is absolutely NOT the most faithful. While yes the Coppola version had some notable scenes from the book that other versions don't include, it does not present the story faithfully. It's a distillation of Coppola's own cultural experience with the character and story, it was never intended to be a completely faithful adaptation. Coppola explains this himself in the extras for that version. It's called "Bram Stokers'" Dracula as an acknowledgment to the source material, not as a statement of faithfulness to the book. For the same reason The Godfather is titled "Mario Puzo's The Godfather." When adapting a book, Coppola likes to give the original author top billing. Again, explained by Coppola himself in the extras and a common misconception with that version. Watch the extras, listen to the commentaries and hear it all straight form the man himself, it's all in there in the extras. The one way it definitely fails, however, and in a huge way, is making it a love story. Dracula isn't a love story. Dracula isn't a romantic figure. This version portrays him as the pure evil monster who sees humans as nothing but food that he is in the original book. Dracula loves no one but himself and uses anyone and anything to further his own goals. The love story was ripped off almost fully intact from the 1974 version by Dan Curtis, starring Jack Palance. Until that version Dracula had never been told as a love story. This is addressed by Dan Curtis in the extras for the 1974 version. Not vitriolically, more amused by the unintentional influence his movie had on the Dracula movies that followed beginning with the Coppola version. I WAS, however, pleased that it retained the actual weakness to sunlight aspect. Sunlight being lethal to vampires was also not in the book, but introduced in 1922's Nosferatu. In the book, and the Coppola film, vampires are simply weaker during the day, but have their full powers at night. This is why they have to kill him before the sun sets, because he would be invincible at night. So no, as visually sumptuous and (mostly) well cast as it is, it isn't the most faithful version by a long stretch. This one is and has yet to be equaled for accuracy to the source material and while the 1992 film hits SOME beats from the book, this hits far more of them and doesn't stray into other territory.

Hard to find, but luckily it can be seen here on KZfaq. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/b5x_fKx9ytrFmKM.html Saw this when it originally aired. With a few exceptions (which I can easily understand when trying to fit everything into a certain time slot), this is the best and truest version of the original story.
