How did the count know about clairon's death if Mondego killed him and there were no witnesses? How did the count get that garrison? He's not a policeman, judge or prosecutor. What evidence did he present to have it given to him? Or did he take a bribe? How did the count hide the cops? How could an experienced man like Villefort fall into a primary trap?

@@aglayaepanchina2680 He knew about Clarion’s death the same way he just laid it all out. The father was suddenly and opportunely killed, he knew the father was a bonapartist. Logically, mondego would be the only person Villefort could’ve requested to do the deed. How did he get the garrison? Not explained but not hard for me to believe personally. It’s a fair criticism but this movie needs to be condensed so details like this that aren’t that unbelievable don’t need explanation in my opinion. I mean you visually see how he hides them… with steam Last criticism is valid, Villefort shouldn’t have screamed a confession. The book’s slow methodical way was far more logical

Well forced because villefort was too smart to confess to the crime. Revenge came when the benedetto, bastard son of villefort revealed the crimes of his father, which I tried to kill him as a newborn. Pretty bad this blatant compared to the cunning of the count in the book. Villefort's father was never murdered, he was the only one who rivaled the count in cunning, he killed an anti-Bonapartist in the book and later confessed to the duel so that his granddaughter was not forced to marry the son of the man who he maou, because she did not love him. She only knew the life of a slave but it's obvious that he never "used" her throughout the book and told her more than once that when they were in France, she was a free woman, it was only when they were in Ottoman lands she was under that law and had to act the slave. She wanted him and he maintained her honor throughout until he was free of his tormenters. The final scene assumes they were now a couple and would have a normal relationship.

Horrible movie. Aside from the poorly executed vendettas, this scene took away the entire essence of the book. The count has a God complex and the death of the innocent Edouard makes the count feel remorse for his revenge and question her morality and in the end forgive. The count is closer to raskonilkov than zorro. And what a gay scene, I thought we would have Villefort and Edmond kissing on the mouth and having the Village People sound track.

Dantès' revenge on the Proceurer is flawed in both book and film imo. Villefort remembers Édmond too easily, making him seem less unrepentant than in the book. Also, the Count is insatiable in the film, rather than calculating and idolising Providence like the book. In the book, I thought the end was rushed from this point onwards. The twist of Heloïse's last action was Dumas's last great decision in the book for me. Had Villefort's descent into madness been slower, he could've attempted to reason with the Count. One of Édmond's greatest drivers for revenge was the effect his imprisonment had on his father. Had Villefort explained that he'd arrested Dantès to protect his own father, there may have been a much deeper moment of reflection from the Count. However, I think the Magistrate's frantic descent into madness was so effective in showing how quickly the character was overcome by a long forgotten guilt. If he hadn't immediately gone insane, it would've seemed janky and messed with the pace of the story. The complexities, and near endless possibilities and depth, of Villefort's final emotions make him my favourite part of the story but not my favourite character. The Count is my favourite character because of how driven he is, but all the contributing factors in Dantès' immense change can be epitomised by Gerard de Villefort. He is my favourite aspect of the novel because he is no longer a character. He is a plague on the mind of a man so focused, who once mocked a woman's frailty, but then is completely undone by the collapse of a man he once loathed so completely. Most of all, though, unlike a literature essay writer, I don't think every little bit of this was a ploy by the author. The events in a story show how simple moments can highlight everything by themselves without our input. Even when we think we've done everything to shape a story, fate puts another twist in the tale. The door to a room filled with thoughts and fascinating hypotheticals had always been there. Alexandre Dumas was not the one to furnish the room. He merely created the key to open the door.

I know I’m two years late, but I think it’s because he’s a paranoid crown prosecutor and doesn’t have any criminal connections… Mondego is the only one he could trust to do this because if he was betrayed, he could reveal what Mondego did to Edmond. Although the fact that Danglars even knew about this conspiracy is a bit shaky storywise, but I haven’t watched it in a while

It is much more realistic that Edmond orders Villefort to be poisoned. Villefort would hardly confess to his crime and if Edmond dueled with the royal prosecutor, he would be arrested. He is a foreign nobleman and Villefort is the procurator of King Louis Philipe. Emperor Nero did this to Britanicus. "Nero, once aware of the feeling aroused, redoubled his hatred; and with Agrippina's threats becoming instant, as he had no grounds for a criminal charge against his brother and dared not openly order his execution, he tried secrecy and gave orders for poison to be prepared, his agent being Julius Pollio, tribune of a praetorian cohort, and responsible for the detention of the condemned poisoner Locusta, whose fame as a criminal stood high. For that no one about the person of Britannicus shoul cy or contained a dilution to prevent immediate action. Nero, however, impatient of so much leisure in crime, threatened the tribune and ordered the execution of the poisoner, on the ground that, with their apprehensions of scandal and their preparations for defence, they were delaying his release from anxiety. They now promised that death should be as abrupt as if it were the summary work of steel; and a potion - its rapidity guaranteed by a private test of the ingredients - was concocted hard by the Caesar's bedroom. It was the regular custom that the children of the emperors should take their meals in sight of their relatives, seated with other nobles of their age at a more frugal table of their own. There Britannicus dined; and, as his food, solid and liquid, was tried by a taster chosen from his attendants, the following expedient was discovered, to avoid either changing the rule or betraying the plot by killing both master and man. A drink, still harmless, very hot, and already tasted, was handed to Britannicus; then, when he declined it as too warm, cold water was poured in, and with it the poison; which ran so effectively through his whole system that he lost simultaneously both voice and breath. There was a startled movement in the company seated around, and the more obtuse began to disperse; those who could read more clearly sat motionless, their eyes riveted on Nero. He, without changing his recumbent attitude or his pose of unconsciousness, observed that this was a usual incident, due to the epilepsy with which Britannicus had been inflicted from his earliest infancy: sight and sensation would return by degrees."- Annals by Tacitus, book 13, chapters 15 and 16

I love this scene too but I would have worded it a little different to really get into this guys head ..such as instead of saying why did u tell countess mondago; I would have said, MaybI pose a question, The other night Countess Mondago approached me and called me a name I have never heard of before, she said that I reminded her of a person named Edmond. I became curious and found that this was her fiancé and she said he was executed, so why would you tell her that this man was executed, but in reality I had heard he was imprisoned at the Chateau Dif. Now who gains from this lie?

I would do the scene as in the book. Villefort realizes that his wife has killed herself with her son (venom supplied by edmond) and goes mad with sympathy, edmond goes to the house of villefort and tells who he is, villefort shows his dead wife and son telling him to feel avenged. Edmond realizes that his revenge has gone too far. Watch the anime gankutsuou which is a much more similar adaptation to the book. Avenges are darks, there is no romance between mercedes and edmond (he does not love her any more). The anime is 24 episodes.
