Sabaton History

5 жыл бұрын

When Egyptian president Nasser closes an important sea route for their neighbouring state of Israel in May 1967, Israel argues that a military attack on Egypt is justified. During the following six days in June 1967, Israel embarks on a war against Egypt, Syria and Jordan. The Sabaton song 'Counterstrike' describes this short but influential and controversial conflict.

This might be the most controversial topic we have tackled to this date. We are aware of the many controversies and debate surrounding the Six-Day War, including debates surrounding the justification of the Israeli 'preemptive strike', the role that foreign/western nations played in the conflict and warcrimes that might have been committed by both sides. We decided to stay away from these debates in this video, and stick to the historical narrative. While we highly value (academic) debate and discussion, we don't allow for racism, xenophobia, anti-semitism and partisan revisionism. Also, please try to stay away from modern partisan politics as far as possible. Thanks for reading! Cheers! To this date. This can compete with the Final Solution. But you guys are right. Stay away from politics and just got on history. And that's how I listen to the song. Also for those who want to know about the song that Joakim made with Desert. It's called Lament of Soldier's Glory. I find it amazing.

Just a question: how do you guys decide which perspective to take in a song? Cause you don't always take the 'good guy's side', what is totally ok I think. In discussing history it's important to understand the motivations of every sides. Just, this song could have been written from Egypt's perspective too for example.

@@johnathanblackwell9960 I mean. He was right. Italy was nowhere near ready for a war and knew it. They wanted to wait a lot longer. And fun fact so did the Kriegsmarine, they needed until like 49' to be remotely ready to face the Brits. So not even Germany was really truly war-ready. When you factor that in, it's remarkable how much they achieved.

I think this is an excellent example of how you talk about such a sensitive topic without standing to one or another side, but without creating taboos. Stick to the facts that can't be denied. I beleive these topics have to be discussed and they have to be discussed with an open mind and with understanding the motivations and reasons of both sides. I love the band isn't afraid of such topics.

I think the only disagreement I have is that I don't think people should be afraid to talk about controversial topics. That's part of what makes youtube as a platform great. That people are willing to speak their minds about something, regardless of if they know it will possibly bring backlash. This isn't to say I mind how sabaton history handled this, I fully understand. But I just think the concept of censoring history for the sake of not "possibly" offending someone is exactly why we have a country where a vast majority of people lack even basic knowledge of the world wars, event's that shaped the world. It's a trend that is going to doom us to re-live some of the worst hours of the human species out of ignorance.

This actually happened much later. Even after Egypt signed the Peace Treaty with Israel. But, I would back you up in referring Jordan as a responsible grown up. The Jordanian army is a real badass army. Israeli pilots, for example, regarded highly of their Jordan counterparts. If Jordan would have taken part in 1973 war, things might have become badly for Israel. But Jordan stayed neutral as much as it could. King Hussein, God rest his soul, was a smart person sending only volunteers to serve under Egyptian command...

@@tristanwentink5735 King Hussein of Jordan was smart because he sent volunteers to fight under Egyptian command. He killed 3 ducks in one shot - he showed the Arab world that he is with them ( because 3 years before 1973 war he kicked PLO out of his country - i.e. Black September) and got rid of the "hawks " that were against King Hussein policies but also showed all loud mouths in his country that called to intervene on Arab side that they should join this volunteer group. He knew well that Israel would win and that way all these volunteers will be either killed or slapped on their faces to understand that they would better shut up.

I think of Sabaton as being in the tradition of the Skalds of the North, you can tell of the honor and courage of an army or an individual soldier divorced from their politics. Hearts of Iron is an excellent example of that I think, a heroic last stand there's no doubt about that, but... it was still a last stand by Wehrmact soldaten which makes it a bit... sketchy in it's greater context.

History can be very controversial, as it is easily politicised and many details in history are subject to different interpretations. There are few historians who believe that we're able to present an absolute historical narrative, so debate (and thus controversy) is inherently part of history and historiography.

The results of the war and its relevance today are controversial, even in Israel. The ongoing control of the parts of Judea and Samaria which were captured in the war are a key issue in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, as well as the closure of Gaza and the annexation of eastern Jerusalem. To a lesser degree, the annexation of the Golan Heights is also somewhat controversial, but I don't think as many people care remotely as much.
