I grew up watching him in my Hometown of Warren, Ohio and I came to the Lord at nearly the same time as brother in Christ Phil did. We may be the same age also. He was with the Band the Glass Harp. He is the very best and blessed by our Lord to play like no other!! Blessings !

I'm just shy of 67 yrs old. I used to go see Phil and his trio Glass Harp at the Rock Garden in Erie, Pa when I was 16 or so

Phil Keaggy and Sunday's Child is my favourite album, closely followed by The Master and the Musician.

I have seen Keaggy in concert so many times!! Breathtaking. I have quite a few vinyl records of his to this day. Fun fact, he came to the college I attended in Warsaw IN, Grace College and Seminary. I was taking a class devoted to CS Lewis' writings, we met at the Prof. (Benyousky's) home, and while there as I was checking out their cd collection, I noticed a cd from Keaggy I had never seen before. I asked about it, and it turns out his wife was Keaggy's road manager. The cd was called "Blue", which is a remix of his excellent cd called "Crimson and Blue". After hearing what a huge fan I was, she gave me the cd, contacted Keaggy and told him about me, and that I was graduating soon.... she didn't ask for anything more than maybe a note to say congrats to me. Instead, as he was coming to Grace soon to do a concert, he invited me back stage after the concert just to meet me. He also wrote/played a song of congratulations to me, put it on a cassette, and mailed it to me with a personal note of congratulations. He is so prolific, I am sure it all took a just few minutes, it was a very simple song with just playing an acoustic guitar. But it meant the world to me that he stopped his world long enough to do this for a total stranger. Thats the kind of man Keaggy is, truly one of the most versatile and gifted guitarists in the world, and yet such a humble and kind man. The night he played at Grace College, Wes King was also playing.... he opened for Keaggy, I will never forget that as he was inviting Keaggy on stage to play his set, Wes said "Keaggy is a composer trapped in a guitar player's body." Such an apt description!!!

Keaggy's solo on Time on the live How the West Was One (1977) is perhaps his most iconic solo. That summer they toured and Time, already released in an earlier studio version in 1974, is the guitar standout on the whole double album.

thanks for covering Phil. I grew up in the portage county area of Ohio. Glass Harp used to play in Kent and surrounding area. I've seen him many times sense those days. He is definitely a one man show. I'm 69 now. I don't think we have anyone like him now.

First heard Phil in 1974, when listening to his 'What A Day" album. Been listening ever since. We live in an age where there are many great guitarists, and everyone has their 'greatest'. Among my favorites are Chet Atkins, Roy Clark, Santana, and Ottmar Liebert, each with their own style, not to mention phenomenal skill. But if I had to pick one to listen to for the rest of eternity, it would be Phil Keaggy. Many of the best are good at a particular genre or style. Phil does it alll and all with excellence, whether it's rock, folk, classical, whatever. Many guitarists can shred the guitar, and play amzing solos. Some can even created beautiful melodies, but few can match the beautiful melodies and harmonies that Phil has put into his music and lyrics. My favorites can touch me deeply with their words and music, but Phil has always inspired my spirit. It would be hard to pick a favorite piece by him, but the soaring joy and hope he invokes in the instrumental "The Promise", on The Wind and The Wheat" album, never fails to inspire me.

The entire Crimson and Blue album is a masterclass in rock guitar. It's mostly live-in-the-studio with his touring band from the early 90's, including John Sferra (Glass Harp), Wade Jaynes, Phil Madeira, and Lynn Nichols. The extended outro jams are fantastic.

Just to make you feel bad, I’ve been listening to Phil since he was 17 and yep, he was that good then.

Our church sponsored a live concert with Phil and the Phil Keaggy Band back in 78, while he was around he played some tunes with Lynn Nichols in our the pastor's kitchen that we recorded. We digitized the tracks 20yrs later....ridiculously amazing

"John the Revelator" is an old cover for him but a true classic. I echo the sentiment that you can't go wrong with any of his music; however, "Time" and "Like a Dreamer" do stand out!

Absolutely, a song to be listened to is with a great solo is "Cherish the Moment" on Phil Keaggy's "Play through Me" album. It's worth listening to all the way through the "Outro" . . . 🧔🎸

Saw the Glass Harp at Mill Creek Park in Youngstown, Ohio in the summer of 2001. Was so wonderful to see them together again. We went many, many times to see them in the late 60’s and 70’s. Phil has always been phenomenal. I loved seeing John Sferra and Danny Pecchio as well. It was meaningful to witness their humility and gratitude for being part of such an appreciate fan base.

Gotta check out his finger style work like The Reunion and Shades of Green. IMHO there is no one better in general and in terms of looping, he is the universal champ. And he is the nicest most humble & kind person. He lives what he believes and is a great exemplar of a strong godly man.

I saw him from the very front row, 3 feet in front of him, a number of times back in 1967ish. That was the best I could do for guitar lessons. No such thing as KZfaq! Also, Joe Walsh and Alvin Lee. Glass Harp backed up Lee Michaels at Akron Civic -- my first concert!

Been listening to Phil since 1980. Seen him in concert over 50 times played on stage with him three times. I have photographs if you want me to show you. Yes he’s an amazing guitar player. I’ve been playing for 60 years. Those of us old enough to have used analog cassettes as our music medium will likely remember the ad from tape manufacturer Maxell, where a listener and everything in the room are getting blown over by the sound coming from a Maxell tape. Phil Keaggy was part of my own "Maxell moment", and it had nothing to do with the tape. From my teen years in the 1970's in the Midwest, I had heard of Christians expressing their faith via the music of "my" generation, but had never heard it expressed via an overdriven guitar. That is, until a friend dropped the needle on a song called "It's All Right" sung by Matthew Ward. Phil was playing guitar on that track - and I had found the speaker-melting, full-on righteous rock that I had been looking for. Then I heard some of his other work ("A Royal Commandment" off his Ph'lip Side album particularly sticks in my mind) ... and also discovered that he was far more than your typical rock guitarist; that he could play a nylon-strung classical guitar with every bit of the skill he plays that Les Paul with, with a great voice and writing skills to go with it. Phil's work took up a lot of space on my college-radio shows - and two tracks from his instrumental album "The Master and the Musician" were the processional and recessional when my wife and I were married.

Check out his solo on the song "sounds" to hear him rock out. This might be urban legend but I heard that Clapton was once asked what it was like to be the greatest guitarist in the world and he answered, "Go ask Phil Keaggy". If true that's one hell of a compliment.

Play thru me, Crimson and Blue and 220 are great works. I once got to see him perform on a stage with a stool and an acoustic guitar. Just him. He played us songs for 2 hours and then handed out CDs. Amazing man.

Carefree is my favorite song he does musically. Maker of the universe is my favorite he does lyrically.

I used to go see glass harp whenever they played at Cyrus Erie West which was an under 21 music club. Bid they blew my mind hes one of the best guitarist ever!

His acoustic stuff is great, too.

Don't neglect his awesome vocals as well. I wouldn't say that he rips off McCartney but similar to him, yet smoother and richer at least to me. Really phenomenal. As far as guitar, I know that I like his jazzy stuff such as on Master and classical stuff as on Lights of Madrid. And then recently I discovered a live version of Time that I hadn't heard before which was amazing solo work, and of course, Do Lord with Glass Harp.

He is, imho, the most innovative guitarist in the last 50yrs, a notch above even Jeff Beck, who's a close 2nd. One of his earliest works was a live tour in the late 70's with a Christian group named 2nd Chapter of Acts; they cut an album named "How The West Was One", has a track called "Rejoice" that gives you a mini synopsis of his talent. Phil is a one man band. Everyone else can put their instruments away...

Look up the album Crimson and Blue. There are a number of pieces on there but I will definitely come back if you could do Stone eyes or his John the Revalator. He has complexities that are hard to follow and stylistically is a bit older then I.
