Country Coach Engine Access Removal...How Hard Could it Be?

Here is a quick video I made to an emergency mobile call to West Phoenix. The Country Coach Magna was there being inspected for a buyer and Empire needed access to the top of the engine. They wanted to break the tiles out so the seller asked me to open the cover for them. Here is my experience just trying to get to the CAT engine. Thanks for watching!

By '09 Country Coach used aluminum extrusions around the opening as well as the tile hatch. Only a thin top coat was applied to cover the seam. Also, a pair of suction cups are very handy when lifting the tile hatch. It's heavy as well as fragile so prying is the last thing to do. Nice job of feeling your way through the unknown, James. I had to do my learning on the side of the road when a turbo actuator went out on my Cummins ISM.

Nice! As you have discovered, Country Coach did some amazing cabinetry. I am glad you recognized the subtle difference in the tile floor. Hidden in plain sight! The Prevost is designed first and foremost as a commercial vehicle. It is paramount that mechanics can access the engine in time of need, in order to return the coach to service as soon as possible. Well, if you are just dealing with passenger seating, hiding the access matters not. But, in a custom coach, we get cool cabinetry and furnishings. I discovered this dealing with my friend's Country Coach, accessing the Detroit 8v92 front end. I took my time, we disassembled the bed cabinetry, and I am very impressed. They built the cabinetry with the goal of being serviceable. My bone to pick with corporate mergers and time? Good luck getting information about details on the Country Coach. Unobtanium!! Sorry, but Country Coach built some absolutely superb conversions. In this video, you can see what I am talking about. But, here is my strongest suggestion, albeit late in the game. I was a manufacturer back in the day, so to speak. On the sidelines, I must qualify this. There is absolutely nothing more sacred, in my mind, than supporting the people that decided to buy and support your product. Support is paramount, folks. IF YOU SUPPORT YOUR CUSTOMERS, you do more for the value of your product than millions of dollars in advertising and marketing could even DREAM of doing. Truth. Letting the end customer know how to access that engine? Priceless. There should have been a placard in that cabinet! Remove the drawer, and voila! A diagram for all time. Guess they did not think of that.

Great statement. James is a walking library of info. His approach to, " I don't know what I'm doing, but, we are going in and will figure it out on the fly" is really the only approach to take on most coaches I'd say. The scariest thing here is the TILE! one chip and you have to give the owner a Valium. Excellent work on the access though. very interesting watch!

Beautiful Coach for full time living, but that access is like a weekend process to P.M. the coach. Cat's seem to be pretty bulletproof on the lower end , but I'm seeing that the rocker arm rollers tend to wear out once in a while, clogged injectors too are a maintenance issue that would pop up. It's all accessible right there. Pretty convenient really. Surgical strike though in that you want none of the greases, fuel any of that in the coach.

That was a wise thing for the buyer to have this inspection done. This is a Acert regin engine, the twin turbos and the exhaust burner are a clue. The long haul truckers hate these engines because of the problems. It is a lot easier to work on these in a Peterbuilt or a KW. These put out a lot of heat during regen, so the owners need to be aware of where they park when they are close to regen mileage. The good news is that the Cat mechanics are well aware of what to look for and an RV does not get the hard service of a truck.

I used to be a final finisher on the F22 Stealth Fighter Jet. We placed a nylon cord in the gap before adding the final caulk in the access panels so we could take a tool and find the string and use as a rip cord to remove most of the caulk around the perimeter of the panel. Just a thought

AZ Expert. Very good! Carpentry isn't in my wheelhouse so I'm very impressed by your adeptness in disassembling the cabinet. I either wouldn't have figured it out or it would have taken me days to do so. You certainly are an expert. I found your use of the word "carcass" to be an interesting choice. I say this not out of amusement or as being a sideways insult, but as a person that enjoys writing. In part, it was an interesting choice as I've never heard "carcass" used in relation to furniture. I'm a newer subscriber and I have enjoyed all of your videos that I've seen so far. I have an appreciation for your dialog and the concise method format of your videos. When there're two turbos on an engine, one is smaller and spools up faster allowing for much less lag waiting for the bigger turbo to spool up. You found an excellent match for the caulking color. But how they ever got "Haystack" for that color I can't begin to imagine. On this end it just looks like Taupe.

I am surprised at diesel shops that know so little about diesel pushers. They may know the diesel engine but it is like they have never worked on a motor home before. The 2 turbos is pretty common for a while now, one is high pressure one low. Heavy diesel and Adept Ape (youtube) have videos about it that can explain it a lot better than I would.
@AZExpert

I never knew that about the turbos. RVs chassis straddle the line of "not my job" It get worse with air bag suspensions that have air leveling controls on them.

This was a dealer support job.It took a couple hours to remove and re-install mostly due to the location of the shop.

Fellows , think back when it was buit. Why it was designed this way. The CC was 800k while the average price of a house was 250k. Brand new and under a warranty, nobody care about how difficult or expensive engine access was, the more difficult the better, . Only now, that this coaches have gone down in price to 200k, we care, why? Having said that , some DP have roll on /off engines, that is a great way think about engine access.

Thank you. I was not aware of that. I know this one had "emissions control issues" in the past which is why I was removing the cover.

IMO... this is EXACTLY why I would buy a Super C diesel. Complete access in the front... where it belongs... and you even have crash protection as a bonus.

Why wouldn’t you heat an engine cover?! fucking hilarious! Bumming me out a little bit though, I was really hoping to score this exact model same year in good health. that engine access is a nightmare tho....
