Thank you for being here! To answer your question, having the right shoes and dance floor won't make your turns perfect but having the wrong ones could certainly make it harder. A dirt floor with rubber soles sounds ... scary. There are several videos here on our channel top help with turns. Look through the "Country Dance Tips" Playlist :-)

Thank you for watching and your input. I'm sure that various forms of dance use different terminology. It seems you may be of a jazz or ballet background? Country dance is different. Partner dancing in general is just different. There are 3 types of turns shown in this video, but none of them are soutenu turns. Soutenu turns (as well as Soutenu Pique) are generally not used in county dancing. In fact, most turns used in non partner dancing aren't recommended in country dance. The turn you are referring to is, in fact, a chaine turn in country dance. As a helpful tip (as we have taught many dancers from ballet, jazz, modern, etc backgrounds ... When dancing with a partner, the energy needed to create motion doesn't come from "self". It generally begins with a lead from a partner. Therefore, unlike the solo styles of dance, turns are not generally recommended in releve (solo dancing may require that partially to create energy that is not required in partner dance). They are much more grounded. Also, don't let misunderstood words confuse you as many times the words we use mean quite different things in other forms of dance :-)
