Land Rover Discovery 2 TD5 and V8 - Hub Bearing, Brake Discs & Pads Replacement - Part Two

7 жыл бұрынPart two of replacing the hub, bearing, discs and pads on the Discovery TD5.
The Discovery 2 had developed a rather noisy hum at the front right when taking left hand bends. I instantly recognised this as a hub/wheel bearing on it's way out.
Of course, with the Discovery 2, it's not possible to replace the bearing as a separate unit, requiring instead a new hub with bearing built in.
Whilst I'm at it, the front brake discs are heavily worn, so will be replacing those, as well as the pads.

Good instructional video, one thing I need to comment on though is that it's obvious that the upper caliper slide is seized. There's no way that you should need a G clamp to centralise the caliper over the brake pads, cleaning the pins is usually sufficient to restore their correct function.

You're quite right. Unfortunately I was against the clock and had to get creative. :) Immediately after this job, I had to re-lay some floorboards having already fixed several rotten joists, then repair a flue pipe on a multi fuel stove. The following day I needed the car to collect four 2-tonne loads of gravel in the tipping trailer, to mend the road. With a less hectic schedule, or if it had been my motorbike, I would have stripped them down and cleaned 'em up. Necessity is the mother of invention?

+Phil Gamwell Glad to be of help and all the best with your job. Just make sure you've got all the crud off the calliper fixing bolts and the socket is on firmly. You don't want to round those off. :)

aah, the magic of video editing = non ventilated disk to ventilated disk with no words or note that you initially fitted an incorrect disk!

Try popping a thin wooden block across both caliper pistons to squeeze them both in at the same time. Works for me! :-)

I never needed to use anything other than an old brake pad to use as a spreader to make both pistons go back

It's just a standard instant gasket.
