Of late the Discovery has been making a loud and disconcerting knocking sound on some corners and whenever driving slowly over potholed tracks. This could also be felt through the bottom of the drivers seat.
The problem was a worn Watts Link (or Linkage) and in this video I fit a new one.
For new Watts Linkages (and also replacement bushes), you'll find them for sale here on eBay rover.ebay.com/rover/1/710-53...

I’ll be replacing mine in a few days. Thanks for including the torque requirements. I also don’t have a press and opted for a new pivot. Hefty piece. Great video, and very helpful. And yes, if you want to own and self-maintain a D2 you become an expert on it.

Before torquing up you need to drop the weight of the Landy onto its suspension, otherwise you will tear the new bushes apart and cause premature failure!

The most informative and helpful video I have ever watched. I have watched lots of videos to help me repair many things along with my trusty landrover. Great filming! Really descriptive! So much information! Including torque settings. Too many "helpful" videos Skip vital steps. And also a nice talented funny guy Thanks for doing this.

Just finished watching all your videos on your fun with a Discovery 2, reason I bought one with a minor problem and thankfully not had the hassle that you have had, that said, I need to say a BIG thanks for this series that you did here, I found it really enjoyable to watch, great content, and so much better than Big Brother or the other rubbish on TV. Just please keep them coming, im sure that others out there really appreciate the time and effort that you have put in... Cheers and I owe you a beer.

Love my Disco - it's becoming my hobby! After the D2 things just got too technical for me (specialised tools, ultra-expensive parts, etc.) - even a DIYer just starting out can attempt a lot of fixes on a D2: KZfaq, forums, the internet and RAVE are your friends. Just wish I had a trolley jack, a real vice, a workbench, a bearing press and a lift to make things a wee bit easier! Remember, safety first, second and third!

Interesting and useful vid. Thanks. Did you change the outer bushes at any point? Do you need a press for that kind of thing?
@CountryHouseGent
@CountryHouseGent 6 жыл бұрын
+kyojitsu1 No I didn't change the outer bushes but a press would be needed, or it may be possible to mock up something suitable using a bench vice.
@paullaker3062

They are supposed to flop about on the outer bushes for off roading. your centre bush is not shot either. what causes the knocking is one of the outer bushes has inside wear. way to test which one is to hold each link road and push and pull away and towards the outer bush to see which one has play. the centre bush very very rarely fails. just replace the out bush for £40. very common for either center out bush to fail as i have just done mine . was of money buying full centre-link. If you have air suspension like me you can use a ratchet strap from the tow bar to the rear wheel to move the body if needed. Good vid anyway.

Firstly thank you for the discovery two videos you do they really make a difference and really help to understand what the problem is how to do it any obstacles during dismantle and refit so thanks for that. On the Whatts link centre bolt has a really funny peculiar component around the Centre bolt almost a bit oval in shape is it some form of protection for the bolt but it's not on your video it's not there but on others it is and certainly on my disco it is! So before I even start messing around with that do you have any knowledge of how I can remove that so I can start trying to clean the bolt up? Kind regards.

Hi Barry. The only peculiar thing I remember on the end of the centre bolt, was that the earthing strap to the chassis was attached to it. There's two nuts on the end, one holding the earth strap in place and the other securing the watts link. Cheers,

I'm at a point to replace my rear bushes in the outer watts center link. The middle one is still good, but the outer two need to be pressed out and replaced. I have aftermarket options, Bearmark, OEM, Britpart and LR and then the genuine landrover. Are you familiar with good quality replacement brands other than genuine landrover.
@CountryHouseGent
@CountryHouseGent 6 жыл бұрын
Hello David. The Watts link I used here was a Britpart and most of the other jobs I did to the car used Britpart as well. So far, fingers crossed, there's been no issues. Hope this helps.

@CountryHouseGent
@CountryHouseGent 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Stewart and cheers. Well so far, fingers crossed, there's not been any knocking noises, but I'd say that if you can afford it, and for peace of mind, I'd go for the genuine part - though that's no guarantee of trouble free mileage of course.

Did you put the britpart one on ? I reckon so as this comes with bushes pre fitted in the metal pivot housing. If so have you had any problems with it ? I have heard bad things about the britpart bushes

Just a quick question mate… did you lower the truck back onto its wheels before fully tightening all bolts? I’ve just bought a new linkage and centre pivot and it describes to lower the truck back onto the ground before tightening otherwise this will cause excessive strain on the bushes and cause premature failure?

Great Video, thanks. I'm trying to do mine at the moment, but can't get the long centre bolt (last knut) to budge. I've cleaned it up and applied penetration oil for days. I've put a trolley jack under a ring spanner to force the knut up to undo it, and I've restrained the bolt head to stop that turning. Any ideas? Blow torch? grinder?. I have a spare bolt.

Could you do it without removing the outer arms? As in just removing the 3 bolts from the centre watts links. Thanks

I'd say you could but in my case I thought it better to remove the lot because easier to undo all the rusty seized bolts.

@amblernectar
@amblernectar 5 жыл бұрын
The D1 has the old land rover A-frame in the centre instead of the watts link. The A-frame is just two arms connected to the axle by a large ball joint.

Had to chuckle at the comment 'look at the play in that'. Its supposed to be like that, the inner joints are swivel bearings not bushes, the outer ones are bushes. Get a Haynes manual!
@phantomwalker8251
@phantomwalker8251 5 жыл бұрын
seeing that those arms move thru a lot of degree,i wouldnt tightten them,or you ,ll be replacing them in 6 months,.they need to move,so,,those bolts should have a bottoming ledge,for correct movement.the thread should be cut smaller than the bolt,so it stops,bottoms out.

You mean " ACTUAL brands of penetrating fluids are available " WD40 is not a penetrating fluid, it's for water displacement; hence WD
