Couple fits clever barnhouse & Quonset hut on skinny lot in MN

On a small and affordable Minneapolis lot, Jean and Joe built a barn-style house to maximize the vertical on their skinny lot. Zoning required a garage priced at $30,000; having a limited budget, they bought a $6,000, multiuse Quonset hut big enough to fit two cars, and erected it with the help of friends over a weekend.
They had originally thought of buying a weeHouse prefab but decided that the barnhouse by Alchemy architects (creator of the WeeHouse) would fit better with the boxy Victorians in the neighborhood.
The barnhouse also opened up the interior for a floor-to-ceiling unobstructed living room. Wanting something that felt like the Manhattan apartment they had left behind with their move to Minneapolis, the couple chose not to use all possible second-floor space, and instead they created a treehouse-style bedroom that overlooks the living room.
To keep costs down they picked up an IKEA showroom kitchen at 70% off, working wooden highlights into the gray laminate to personalize the cabinets.
Not wanting to spend on “floating walnut stairs”, they instead opted for diamond-tread for the stairs to continue with the lighty industrial feel of the space.
The couple’s “treehouse” bedroom cabin has an inside window that both looks down at the living space and matches with the exterior window so the bedroom still experiences the sunrise.

People are often surprised to find out Quonset huts were invented right here in little Rhode Island, named for the Naval Air Station Quonset Point where it was developed by the Naval Construction Battalion (Seabees). The peninsula on which the base was situated was called Quonset; Algonquin for "small, long place." A fitting name for both the peninsula AND the hut, I think!

Marc, my grade school was too old and small for all the boomers-to-be, so a Quonset hut was installed as a temp. classroom. All the first- graders in normal school rooms envied the "round room" kids-including me.😏

Very cool use of the budget. True North, located in Detroit, by designer Edwin Chan is a great example of using steel ribbed arches for living spaces. The structure is traditionally utilitarian, but the project (like this one) recontextualizes it and gives it new purpose by using it to create affordable housing in urban neighborhoods.

I think this is a great example of urban renewal. So many homes are too old in a city to rebuild. This concept would be great for young families to repopulate an urban neighborhood. Love the home. Wish we could see more of the first floor.

@Henry Benjamin Stoneking There are some you can ignore simply because no one will notice. There are many where the city will literally come in with an order to comply. What makes me laugh is that, not only does Minneapolis apparently insist on a garage with new builds but they don’t seem to care if that garage is a distinctive eyesore.
@robfj3414
@robfj3414 3 жыл бұрын
@Henry Benjamin Stoneking They are, in fact, laws for all intents and purposes. They are municipal building and fire codes which may or may not go further than state (provincial) or federal regulations. You won’t get a criminal record for violating them but you will get the possibility of a hefty fine and an order to tear down or alter any structure to ensure it meets the requirements of the code.

I'd say it fits its location even if it is not traditional construction. The siding is reminiscent of shou sugi ban & appealing imo. Taking two kit type buildings & getting them to 'fit' code with this outcome is an admirable feat. It is sad 'code' precludes the allowance for passive solar & lower energy layout that could have been possible. They have done very well using a thrift based criteria to develop that living space. Would you mention the all in budget?

Just use some white paint vs the expensive fire retardant coating to finish off the rest of the interior of the hut...also consider painting the exterior to create a more subtle presence - personally, I'd go with charcoal or black to match the house - although some people might prefer the space-age look. EDIT: That master bath is great, love the skylight. Also wanted to compliment the interior design with the loft concept, very nice.
