Coming up, it’s the story of two musicians who achieved global success both as songwriters and band members. They also happened to be romantically involved. You can credit them with two #1 Hot 100 hits for one of the biggest stars in the industry, How Will I Know and I Wanna Dance With Somebody, and another massive hit for themselves Waiting for a Star to Fall, a feel-good 80s staple, has become a sleeper classic. It’s catchy, it’s upbeat, and guaranteed to elevate your mood… Only, behind the scenes, this track has a much different story. While working on the song and their album, this couple couldn’t even look each other in the eyes. Their relationship was completely falling apart. Making for a bitter contrast to one of the most energetic 80s hit you’ll ever hear. So… would their crumbling relationship ruin everything they had worked for? Or would the stars once again align for them as the decade faded? the answer is next on Professor of Rock.

#80smusic #onehitwonder #80ssongs
Hey music junkies, Professor of Rock, always here to celebrate the greatest artists and the greatest songs of all time. If you ever begged your parents for a quarter to get one of those cheap toys from the vending machine you’ll dig this channel of nostalgia, Make sure to subscribe below right now. I know you’ll dig this channel. We also have a patreon you'll want to check out. There you’ll find an additional catalog of exclusive content and you can even become an honorary producer to help us curate this music history.
It’s time for another edition of our series Bottled Lightening where we celebrate a song or album that was king for a day. Here honor artists and bands that rocketed up the charts… but for reasons unknown weren’t able to sustain that success. Called by some ‘one-hit wonders’, we celebrate them instead as lightning in a bottle. On previous episodes we have covered Wishing Well by Terrance Trent D’Arby, She Drive Me Crazy by Fine Young Cannibals, and Hands to Heaven by Breathe. Today's song is one of those ditty that you might not immediately admit you love but deep down you do. There’s just something joyful and lifting in it. It’s been used recently in a KZfaq video that went viral a few years back that is a celebration of the 80s because it kind of epitomizes that feeling of the neon decade so well. It was a Top 5 hit and has over 150 million combined streams on KZfaq and Spotify actually surpassing the songs that kept it out of #1… This song was written by a songwriting couple who are also credited with two #1 hits for another 80s icon. The song? the 80s feel-good classic ‘Waiting for a Star to Fall’ by George Merrill and Shannon Rubicam, aka Boy Meets Girl.
But there’s also a bit of a mystery surrounding this Bottled Lightning duo. You would think that with multiple chart-topping hits to their name, they would be a hot commodity. And you could expect plenty more where that came from. And yet Boy Meets Girl as a band and as songwriters inexplicably vanished from mainstream music. So what happened? Let’s get into it and figure this one out.

DAD,, that's a GOOD point,, I like hard stuff but I can't listen to s*** like Metallica all the time,, I don't know about anybody else but it makes me angry and depressed listening to distorted chords and "sad but true-AHH" too long lol... Three weeks and half the metal bands out there were ending each line with -AHH... Even if the line ended with a consonant ... These lighter tunes that people think of as Pop make a good mix,, Black Sabbath War pigs, then Christopher Cross sailing, sounds good to me...

"Waiting For A Star To Fall" is an excellent song, but it's about not having the love, and struggling enough that he wishes he didn't feel that strongly about her. I think the greatest perfect love song would be about actually being in that mutual love. Musically it sounds so uplifting that a lot of people imagine lyrics more positive than what are actually there.

Some other words I’d use to describe this song : innocent, whimsical, effervescent. Seriously, as soon as I hear the first few notes of this song, it puts the biggest grin on my face and makes me so happy. There’s a scene in the music video where Shannon is twirling around, and that moment perfectly describes what I feel like and want to do whenever I hear this song! I was just shy of my 11th birthday when this song was released and I have absolutely loved it ever since that day! I ordered the CD online back in 2005 and I received an email confirmation of my order. The email was signed “Shannon”. I wrote back and asked if this happened to be THE Shannon (Rubicam) from Boy Meets Girl, and IT WAS HER! We emailed back and forth a little and it was such a thrill for me! 🥰😍❤️🎶

The video for "Waiting for a Star to Fall" is such a portrayal of young parents in love that it's interesting that they were actually struggling so much. "Reel Life" has been a favorite album since it first came out. I wish you could have done live interviews with George and Shannon. I knew they had divorced, then reunited as songwriters off and on since them, and I've often wondered about the dynamics of that.

I make no apology for adoring this song! It isn't a cheesy ditty from the 80s. It's a funky--can you feel the groove under the tinny 80s production? And listen to his vocals--soulful, smooth, not to mention a soaring falsetto! Plus, love the lyrics! The way the line: "Who says I should let a wild one go free?" slides right into melody & rhythm in an innovative way (emphasizing the lyric "wild" an extra beat)....SO GOOD! The perfect pop song!

My band started performing in 2020 (we formed in November 2019), and on the night that our lockdowns were being announced due to the pandemic, I was with my band and we were learning and jamming Waiting for a Star to Fall together as we had decided to include this in our list of covers for future performances alongside some of our original songs. Because of how many times I heard this song for practice and just for sheer enjoyment, I remember the early stages of the pandemic every time I hear the song and it isn't as bad a memory as my description makes it sound.

Practice or practise? One's a verb & one's a noun. Can you tell the difference? 😁 Be surprised how many don't, even published authors get it wrong.

You literally summed up my experience......I saw the KZfaq 80s video that used it to celebrate that Era. I had completely forgotten about it, but the second I heard it, I was flooded with not only memories but FEELINGS of that time....and of my father who would pass just several years later. It immediately went into my playlist!

Graduated high school in '88.. while it wasn't a standout for me at the time, it always held its own. I probably wouldn't have sought out it, but always happy to hear it! Loved learning all of that behind it- makes it all the more endearing 😊

I was in preschool when this song came out; it's one of the first songs in my life I ever knew by heart. Maybe the first. I have a primal, emotional connection to it and likely always will.

When I was playing the hits on a local Top 40 station back in the '90s, I used to always use "Waiting for a Star to Fall" as a fill song if I was running short of the top of the hour. Great stuff!! 😁

AC has been just about my favorite music genre for about as long as I've listened to the radio. This single has always made me feel good inside, not sure exactly why. I found the CD in the bargain bin in the early 90s and bought it, and even though it only had two singles released, I found myself enjoying every track on it. I have since gone through my CD collection and sold or given away any CD that I didn't consider essential. I considered giving away Reel Life, but found that I just couldn't. I like it too much. I've always been curious to know more about this couple/band, and your video filled me in nicely. Thanks Adam.

Waiting for A Star to Fall is definitely a go to for me to go with my set list of favorite songs during my high school period. It's just one of those hard to forget and the way it made us feel so alive in that particular decade.

The Boy Meets Girl name practically sang itself when I was listening to the teaser. I knew it was them and that the song was "Waiting for a Star to Fall" when you mentioned a songwriting couple who'd written 2 number #1 hits for another (Whitney). How do I keep doing this? I was 9 when "Waiting for a Star to Fall" hit. I always enjoyed it, partly because George sounds largely the way Michael Jackson did in his early career with the Jacksons. As an adult, I've tried my hand at playing the song myself. I wish Boy Meets Girl had hit more frequently.

I loved 'Waiting For A Star to Fall' - first time I heard it on the radio, I popped out to the record store and bought the 45 -- it was such a 'feel good' song! I didn't realize that this song-writing duo wrote all those other hits, but listening to them in your video, you can certainly tell it was written by them (...still learning in my older age!)

I was in my 20’s the whole 80’s decade, what a blast and a blessing to have been young and experience it as it happened. It was something so special about the 80’s compared to other decades! Through all of the pop, funk, dance, new wave, rock of the 80’s, it’s ultimately those cheesy love songs that we remember and cherish the most as all these years go by. And Waiting For A Star To Fall is one of my most cherished and loved songs from the 80’s, I’ll never grow tired of hearing it! ♥️♥️♥️

Adam…thank you for shining another light on maybe the best pop song from the 80s. I was into punk, metal and hair rock. It was easy to scoff at it with my mates. The song however is that eternally optimistic one that extends over time and space! Why should just let a wild one go free? I still listen to punk, rock and progressive music…but the song that plays at 6:56 EVERY morning on my Alexa? Waiting for a Star to Fall and hoping this will be the day it does. Great work!

I want to thank you so much for this video. I was active in George and Shannon's life during this whole time. Here's a tidbit for you - my husband shattered his ankle in 1986 about the time the video was being brainstormed. In a midnight phone call George was in one of his midnight meetings. To help my depression of my husband being the hospital George asked me what I want to see in their video for Waiting for a Star to Fall - I remember my answer to this day - I told George that "after viewing the video I want to feel like I've just spent a Sunday afternoon with you and Shannon...." and thus the brainstorm I provided was the base idea for the video. That video means so much to me with more hidden messages in it that most do not know. I even remember when Whitney Houston was in the process of selecting "How Will I Know". These two are inspiration for my own music and they even sang at my wedding. So, again, thank you so much.
