Meet Rob & Jay, a couple living on a sailboat, full-time, as they prepare for retirement in ~10 years. After they lost their home, and Rob lost his job, they spent years living in a shared 5-bedroom rental before taking the plunge and buying a 43 foot steel sailboat - Goshawk Ketch.
They are now full-time liveaboards, even during Canada's extreme winters, and have spent the last 3 years living on the boat while renovating it from the inside out to get it ready for cruising.
The boat life suits their simple lifestyle as they eagerly plan to set sail for Quebec City, Halifax, the Caribbean and then the Atlantic!
Follow their boat life journey at: / goshawkketch

My advice having been a live aboard for 16 years, sailed the Mediterranean, crossed the Atlantic and cruised the Caribbean you need to get some very serious sailing experience. From experience sailing can be very hard indeed especially when crossing the Atlantic and cruising Europe and the UK where the seas are unforgiving. Sailing is not inexpensive as sails/rigging are as expensive as engines to run, then there is hauling out each year and bottom painting. A steel boat such as yours is even more expensive as the paint systems required are a problem. A gas cooker/stove is the thing to have, a swinging stove is questionable as they do not work that well unless the sea is relatively calm. When we crossed the Atlantic we had to hold the handles of the cooking utensils or they would have been on the floor. If you do install 500w of solar panels with a 3kw inverter and a sizeable battery bank (800Ah+) then a microwave and oven are a great benefit. A good diesel generator is also almost a critical item to make life aboard comfortable. Take care to prepare and you will undoubtedly have a wonderful experience but do not take too long as once retired 65+ it is a bit late as you will inevitably lose the drive and confidence.

rv has problems like parking with those nightly fees. A boat you can shit overboard you just hang your ass overboard or piss overboard. I work on the water and if you got 200 boats working you will have about 600 turds floating by.

That's pure luxury! I live on a kylix 27 i Denmark. And i don't want bigger boat than 35 feet. Sailing solo is good, live aboard is also live more outside. But everybody for it's own style. Just be a bit easy on telling that it's a tuff life when you live in a castle ;-)

Had a friend who lost a boat of this size when a hurricane sank it while tied up in a marina. I've always found the worry factor to be pretty high unless you have excellent insurance. The most important thing of course is the dream which makes it worth it. Love the video..

+Rob Vann so true! Hurricanes are a very real concern - especially when you're in a place where they happen often. That said, we also sometimes worry about getting in an accident with the van and wrecking our entire home in the process, but we're not scared enough to give it up. It's definitely a tradeoff. Thanks for watching :)

I loved this one! The cruising lifestyle is the perfect alternative lifestyle. I read this somewhere: "Nothing else combines so much elegant technology with so many basic human needs as a cruising sailboat". This has been my dream for years, but it has been placed on the back burner for now. Lately I've been watching KZfaq videos from the excellent channel Sailing La Vagabonde. They are a young couple cruising the world in their sailboat, and posting some excellent videos. Thanks for another quality video. Happy Trails!

Me too. Its important to keep or get in shape when sailing. Looks like they are mainly vegan with eating wild seafood. I would trust Riley to sail with. He can climb the mast if needed in a storm. I like watching : RAN sailing and the beginners troubles of: Sailing Miss Lone Star. Riley's yacht and improvement i like best. Looks very comfy and its pretty inside, La Vagabond. SV Delos i just stumbled across and impressed how he replaced and hung on the mast for hours a day in serious heat, getting the job done. Beginners better take experienced crew with them, crew that needs hours for licensing but has been hopefully sailing prior for years. Thats what I've learned watching all types of sailing vids. Life is short. I've only been as a deck lizard 3 times transcontinental Atlantic. I never get sea sick, however once everyone did.

After watching a few of these videos, I had a thought. If a married couple can get along in close quarters, it's gotta be love. Clearly Rob and Jay dig each other. Both seem very easy going. Even tempered. They're tactile types. Would be interesting to know if Rob and Jay saw an improvement in their relationship after they moved out of the big house and into the boat. In a large house, man and wife drift away from each other. Might actually see one another for a couple hours a day. That's no good. Maybe the RV or liveaboard lifestyle is conducive to a happy marriage. On the other hand, we see only the success stories. For every one of these, there might be ten failures.

Nothing better then having a good marriage. Marriages take work. And thats fine. Learning and knowing the grass is not greener. Seeing all the goodness in your spouse, avoiding the negatives. Marriage is a big thumbs up.
@LeonAllanDavis
@LeonAllanDavis 8 жыл бұрын
TodaysRealHealth That's the problem. Marriages shouldn't "take work". If that happens, then the marriage devolves into a constant struggle for power and dominance. Eventually one side wins and 90% of the time, it's the woman. If for no other reason than she's in better health and lives longer. I like being single. Freedom. I don't have to be somewhere I don't want to be and obey someone I don't really like.

Yeah mon! We have been doing the liveaboard thing just one year over the thirty mark this year (yes 30!) on the same boat. Nothing like it, albeit I wish people would stop saying it is a "cheap" way to live, because it is not. Not only there are mortgage and dock fees but maintenance, insurance, fuel, and most importantly, your boat "home" only depreciates, not the other way, like real property does. So, you have to really like it and be the kind of person who can give up certain things in exchange for a life more in touch with nature and the earth. I would not live ashore no matter what mansion you may offer to me (and I think I speak for Wendy too.)! www.cruisingdog.com

Stephan Dalton Keel depth and storage capacity of water and sewage are great first ways to budget what you need. 30-40 ft is a large workable range. $10k - $100k.

It looks bigger than a 43 feet? I lived in a 27 feet sailboat in denmark for 14 months. its very nice way to live, but headspace are necesary, i did not have that in the 27 feet. now i lived in a caravan with a tent for a year. i can't really see my self in an apartment again. i didn't really live in an apartment much anyway.
