This was The Singer competition in China,, 2017, & Dimash was invited as a wildcard contestant, to compete with established Chinese singers/musicians. The audience of 500 were the judges. Dimash was the youngest contestant ever, & the only non-Chinese which made it not possible for him to win, so he came in second. He was only expected to perform once or twice, but stayed the full season, as he blew up the Chinese internet, & woke up the next day to having fans, & security at his hotel. Autumn Strong was his first song in Mandarin, learned phonetically. It has a full back story you should have gotten before hand to understand the meaning behind the song. The song is about Yoshiko Yamaguchi (山口 淑子), a Chinese-born Japanese actress during World War II. She hid her Japanese heritage under the name Li XIanglan. She became famous in China. However, once the war was over and she revealed her identity, she was accused of being a spy and she was deported back to Japan and didn't go back to China for many years, as it was forbidden at that time. Ms Yamaguchi did return to China in her later years as the Japanese Parliamentary Vice Minister of Environment. This song is saying goodbye to her Chinese name Li Xianglan. The song is a metaphore, as lyrics speak of how a person has to hide what feels inside. Dimash sang it for the first time during The Singer 2017. He had only 1 week to learn it. He interpreted Taiwanese version sang by Terry Lin with Mandarin lyrics. This song earn Dimash the "Best Foreign Singer" award during Golden Melody Award in Hong Kong. Original Japanese version by Koji Tamaki (JAP: 玉置 浩二) under title 行かないで (JAP: Ikanaide), released 20th of Nov 1989. Later it was translated to Cantonese and sang by 张学友 (CN: Jacky Cheung ) recorded for an album "Your dream" (夢中的你) and released 23rd July 1990 as 李香蘭 (CN: Li Xianglan / sometimes used as "Lei Heung Lan"). Jacky changed the key from B minor to A minor. The song was used in Chinese television series called "Li XIang Lan". Next the song was translated for Jacky Cheung to Mandarin Qui Yi Nong (Late Autumn). In 2004 the Taiwanese singer and Dimash's friend Terry Lin adapted the song into new version entitled "In deep autumn", lyrics by Daryl Yao.

A Chinese reactor said that Dimash's pronunciation in this performance was an incredible 99% accurate, and he sounded like a fluent Mandarin speaker. I believe this was the performance that really made him become a superstar in China. He went on to live in China for 3 years because the offers of work just came flooding in.

The contestants of this show were all established Chinese performers except for Dimash, who was a guest, and impressing the audience was key, because they all voted for their favourite performance.
