Great Big Story

4 жыл бұрын

There are over 6,500 languages in the world. But the one language we all share is sometimes the most complicated to understand-love. We traveled around the world to meet couples whose love has stood the test of time. Each of our couples have been together for at least 30 years (some as many as 61!) and they’ve picked up plenty of wisdom about life and love and marriage along the way. From Ghana to Brazil, from St. John, Indiana, to the Philippines, this is what love looks like around the world.

My wife and I have been married 4 years, but we've been together for 11 years. We met in high school gym class, and started dating on April 11, 2009. Stuck it through college, her studying abroad, our military service, hard times and heartbreaking loss. We've traveled abroad, seen all sorts of things in all sorts of places. We married on the shores of Oslofjord, Norway, on April 11, 2016, at 4 pm, as the afternoon sun glittered on the waves. We celebrated our first anniversary together, and our second a thousand miles apart. Our third we celebrated in the hospital, welcoming our beautiful daughter into the world just two days later. We learned from the best, however. My grandparents were together 60+ years, and never seemed to lose their spark. I know this means little to the internet, but I'm so thankful for the love in and of my life.

My parents were just shy 23 days of being married 66 years. They were married 12/21/41 and every month on the 21st my Dad would wish my Mom Happy Anniversary! There were a couple of months in the last few years together that my Dad forgot and that concerned me so I mentioned it to their doctor, he said "You mean to tell me you tell her that every month?" Dad shook his head yes, then the doctor replied "That's not normal! Forgetting is normal so you're fine." They passed away within a year and 10 days of each other. I always knew that would be the case. They were buried in a veteran's cemetery, Dad was retired military, so only one headstone is used with the epitaph of each on opposite sides. Mom's read "Until we meet again," then on Dad's "Together at last." I miss them terribly, they were wonderful people.

I loved this video. Young couples need to know that enduring love is possible and it’s everywhere.. The video was very honest. My favorite line was” we were not similar, we were willing to coexist”. It’s so true. Your partner will have annoying habits that you will have to learn to tolerate. We all have annoying habits. Love is not just a noun, it’s a verb. Love grows every day in all kinds of small gestures. Seek joy in each other and you will find it. I came to New York from Dublin in the spring of 89. I planned to stay for 6 weeks. I was in the country 4 days when I met my husband. He was 18, I was 20. It was absolutely love at first sight. We talked and laughed for hours the first day we met. We have not been apart a single day since. Our love is stronger today than ever. He is my very best friend. He still has many annoying habits but I’ve learned to ignore them, most of the time anyway. Lol...❤️❤️❤️. We met 31 years ago this month. Our kids are , 27, 25, 23 & 21. We are truly blessed.

It's scary to leave someone when you have feelings for them but still recognize that something is wrong. Many people end up in terrible relationships/marriages because they are afraid to be alone. You should be proud of yourself for realizing you deserve better. Stay strong!

So touching & also hilarious. To love & be loved in return is the most beautiful & the most powerful thing in this world. These couples have had their struggles, but God’s grace, commitment, respect & love brought them through. For those who have not been blessed with love like this, I pray that you will know it in this lifetime & beyond.

These are so beautiful. This kind of love is being lost in today’s World. The stories where people have to decide on love in a moment or it’s gone. Where people commit and want longevity. The Earth is losing the love….dont lose the love. This is really beautiful. I greatly enjoy watching it. Thank you. ♥️🙏🏾

“The truth is, the we’re not similar. We just choose to coexist” I love that. People no matter how similar you and your partner can be, there will still be many differences. You have to choose to love and live with this person because they’re worth it.

i’ve always wondered how to keep a spark for more than a limited time. I just recently got out of a very messy toxic relationship. I have dated people before but this was the first time i’ve been in love. I’m 19 so i’m still young and new to love, its hard for me to know right from wrong because I grew up watching my parents toxic n abusive marriage and they still somehow manage to be with each other and be happy sometimes so I would excuse my partner’s behavior when he’d be forceful with me and hurt me physically or threaten me with his weapons when I wouldn’t cooperate because I knew his intentions weren’t ill. It was so beautiful in the beginning, the most realest and sweetest man ever. This video makes me happy but this generation and the generations that come after one another continue to lose the true meaning of love. Everyone just wants to be shared around and have sex. It’s hard to have hope because love as shown in this video is so hard to find now. I’m not sure if I was wrong to leave him for doing those things and not caring for me in the right ways but if you have someone who loves you for who you are, cares for you and treats you well; Please don’t hurt them. If you know its worth it, don’t let go. Communication is so important, and it’s more than just being verbal. The same love never comes twice.

What it means is that happiness needs to come from within you first. BC if you aren't happy by yourself, other people can only help so much to change that. They'll do their best but ultimately you need to feel that happiness. Otherwise, what other people give to you can only be temporary.

Dina A. I know what it means dear. But nowadays, it is used at every corner to justify selfishness and avoid hard relationship work. We dispose of people instead of solving problems. Someone doesn’t make us feel good about ourselves because they don’t validate everything about us? No problem: discard them. It’s not me, it’s them. It’s such a profound problem that it has completely denatured our idea of healthy loving. Whether it’s self love or loving others. The fine line between healthy self esteem and dysfunctional narcissism is blurred now more than ever.
