Күн бұрын

The inaugural episode of #ThePoetryOfReality is finally here! Join me & Ricky Gervais, actor, writer, irreverent comedian & poignant tragedian. CFI gave him the 2019 Richard Dawkins Award. Then I had an on-stage conversation with him & Richard Wiseman, psychologist, comedian & conjuror. Lots of laughs, lots to think about. See for yourself.

@@ankyspon1701 Dawkins is/was one of the world's most respected evolutionary biologists. He's made great contributions to the field and his work has been cited tens of thousands of times in published academic research. This was long before he had anything to say on religion. You obviously disapprove of him, but to say he's clueless and unscientific honestly just signals that you don't know anything about his work or the scientific method.
@ankyspon1701

@@ChuckChuckWood Incorrect, Dawkins has contributed nothing to further the science of evolution and the citations you refer to are almost entirely related to his books, such as the Selfish Gene, which are, along with all his other works, nothing more than speculative over simplifications of the evolutionary process, not scientific papers! Dawkins has never done any experiments nor work to prove evolution is anything other than a weak theory. A theory is only an idea, if it were not, then we'd also have to believe the crackpot flat earth theory. Are you aware Darwin was not a scientist? Darwin dropped out of school, college, medical school and theological college (basically he failed every educational establishment he attended and has no qualifications in anything) and was such an embarrassment to his father, he bundled Charles onto the Beagle to collect bird samples for local wealthy collectors. It was not until years later, with nothing better to do that Darwin, being acquainted with Huxley and several other atheists, decided to put together a book giving his own opinion on a theory of evolution, based upon his own erroneous opinion on a few finches. Darwin had no idea how complex the 'simple' cell was or is now, indeed if Darwin knew what Dawkins currently knows about the complexity of the cell, I'm certain Darwin would not have released his theory. Darwin thought the cell was a smudge, he had no idea about organelles, RNA or DNA, enzymes, protein machines, active transport or the Krebs cycle etc etc, had he done so he would never have believed in evolution. Darwin also stated that the Cambrian explosion disproved his own theory, I'm therefore also certain had Darwin known about the Avalon, Devonian and other 9 great explosions of life, where fully formed plants, insects, fish reptiles and mammals spontaneously appear in the fossil record with no sign of evolution or a common ancestor, Darwin would have never even written on the origin of species. Darwin's work is nothing more than a theory, written by an unscientific person with nothing better to do and no real understanding of biology to base his theory on. Dawkins knows Darwin's theory cannot be proved yet continues to promote it, due to his own hatred of religion. In the 50's Miller Urey falsified their experiment to create the precursors of life in the lab, yet were awarded a noble prize. Dawkins knows life cannot come from non life, ie dead non-living chemicals cannot become alive, and has never once attempted to reproduce that simple experiment himself, because he knows it is impossible, yet Dawkins quotes Miller Urey at every opportunity. Watch Dawkins' latest video where he talks to the school kids and see how Dawkins first evades what he calls the 'difficult questions' when asked about the Krebs cycle, and then later changes a question another girl asks ( how could the heart evolve) instead asking her ' I suppose you want to know how can we live with half of something, half a heart, half an eye etc '! No Dawkins she didn't ask that, the children were asking how irreducibly complex chemical processes within cells, or the actual organs themselves could 'evolve' over time, when they only work as they do. Or how can we know what Denisovans looked like when we only have a few fingers and a jaw bone?! Of course Dawkins avoids such 'difficult' questions because they cannot be answered or explained by evolution. Dawkins is not that scientific, he's just a biologist, not a chemist, so he fails to comprehend the complexities of the chemical processes needed to create proteins and enzymes and even DNA. Dawkins limit is over simplifying evolution for children, such as his favourite organ the eye. Dawkins smugly tells his teenage audience that the eye 'could' have first begun 'perhaps' as a flap of clear skin which let in some light, which the first simple creature 'probably' responded to! Dawkins seems to forget that in order for the creature to respond to light, as well as the transparent flap, it would also need to spontaneously evolve a light receptor cell of some kind, along with an optic nerve connected from that receptor cell direct to the creatures brain and then a suitablly evolved brain area to interpret the light etc. The odds are impossible. Dawkins is an appalling scientist, which, as I eluded to in my previous post, is blatantly obvious in his poetic fantastical writing method and how he talks when attempting to describe Darwin's appallingly lacking theory, along with his own 'thoughts' on how things could have evolved. Have you ever listened to Dawkins or read any of his works? If so, simply note the abject lack of factual language when Dawkins attempts to describe how any physiological process or organ might, could or must have evolved! Here's just a few of the unscientific words Dawkins uses when attempting to perauade his audience that evolution is real; "perhaps, possibly, probably, it might have, it could have, it must have, we think, we assume, we can't be certain but we think, we aren't sure but we assume, it happened by sheer luck, by random chance, maybe, along with countless other unscientific vague terms. Have you ever listened to Dr James Tour, now he's a proper scientist, he doesn't write speculative books aimed at children and adults who know nothing about evolution they haven't seen in jurrassic park, Dr Tour is an eminent biochemist who has millions of citations for his own research papers aimed at scientists. In his own words, Dr Tour describes how abiogenesis, 'the emergence of life from a primordial soup is impossible, as is the process of evolution as described by Darwin and so vehemently promoted by Dawkins. Dawkins is an appalling scientist because he ignores the huge chasms (not little gaps) in evolution and would rather spend what few years he has left decrying religion, because he knows he can never prove evolution. Dawkins reputation only increased because the atheist movement needed a public figure to defend evolution and sadly when he dies, his works will quickly be forgotten. Do your research, if you only listen to Dawkins or watch jurrassic park, you'll never learn how complex the most simple cell is and how impossible abiogenesis or evolution are.

I relish listening to such intelligent people. Ricky is so incredibly quick, with such great observation of human behaviour. Very few people have his objectivity. Richard has for a very long time been a hero of mine, speaking out against the aggravating, irritating, infuriating inherited bollocks the - mainly American people regurgitate. I love the dear, kind American people of what is really my second home, but by fuck that religious bullshit drives you up the wall. "Gaahd" this and "Gaahd" that, all the fucking time, till you want to tell them to poke their fucking superstition up their commodious arses. Worse still, most of it is that silly Italian religion that scooped up senior nazis after the war and evacuated them all to South America, safe from the repercussions of their massive crimes. You can find examples that cult's offences right down through its existence, often as revolting and cruel as the crimes of that other insanity, Islam. Thankfully, as mankind's intellect expands, those two vile cults are slowly withering, and one day they will be gone. What a world it will be!

The tenets of “behavioural determinism”, as plotted by those who would seek to further a kind of new age Dawkinism are, unfortunately, susceptible to the socio-political malignancies that commonly grow from subjective moral guidance. For in attempting to assert autonomy over some of the more disheveling effects of our delinquent “selfish genes”, we might be told to “do as you would be done by”. The person who actually believes it in their heart there is no God... is called a FOOL by God! Because only a FOOL can believe that you can have design without a DESIGNER and creation without a CREATOR! The whole of CREATION is proof of the CREATOR! The atheistic evolutionary 'concept' that "Nothing created something and something evolved into everything"... is simply delusional. Dawkins and Gervais will never eliminate the belief that there is a CREATOR God. So they are wasting their time as they try and PRETEND Good didn't exist! And if they really believe God doesn't exist, they are even bigger fools for wasting so much of their time arguing against something they don't believe exists, when they can't even prove there is no God. In fact Dawkins says he's an agnostic... not an atheist... because he can't prove God doesn't't exist. What a fool he is...

I started looking for meaning in life in my teenage years. I looked into Buddhism, Christianity (read the Bible cover-to-cover twice), and even the Mormonism because half of my family was stuck in that cult. When I was 20, I found The God Delusion in the bookstore at the community college I was attending, and devoured it voraciously over just a few days. It made sense. I credit Richard Dawkins for opening my eyes to the possibilities inherent in reality and the value of rationality and critical thinking. I credit Carl Sagan for opening my mind to the beauty and splendor inherent in our universe, and for taking on a skeptical and scientific viewpoint of the world. And I credit Ricky Gervais for giving me the courage to honestly express myself as an Atheist, and to be outspoken about it. Other great influences on my Atheistic and scientific perspectives have been Stephen Fry, Christopher Hitchens, Sam Harris, and Aron Ra. I can't express enough the gratitude I feel for all of you. Thank you!

The Miracle of the Atom The Laws of physics that exist are due to the activity within the atom, which is finely tuned in order for us to exist and as we know atoms are required for life. The main energy level occupied by an electron during orbit is dictated by its fixed distance from the nucleus of the atom. This is relative to electron and proton attraction. There are constants within the atom, like the size of the electric charge of the electron and the ratio of the masses of the protons relative to each other. All orbitals that have the same value “N” being the main energy level relates to the quantum number and are said to share the same shell level. Protons are subatomic particles which are charged in relation to the nucleus, electrons are attracted towards them because they have opposite electrical charges; this fine tuning keeps them in orbit around the nucleus making the development of life possible as we know it. The atom is a miracle of design not an accident waiting to happen. Everything is made up of atoms which are finely tuned for the building blocks of life and also they create the environment necessary for the existence of life. The conditions on our own earth in particular are finely tuned being described as biophilic in which life as we know it can flourish. If any of the fundamental constants like the speed of light or the strength of gravity were to change just a little, then life as we know it would cease to exist. This realization has led some physicists to argue that our universe is intelligently designed, made especially for us, no accident waiting to happen. We live in a finely tuned universe perfectly primed in order to support life. There is irreducible complexity within the atom never mine the cell as atoms make up cells and are responsible for life as we know it. Atoms are unique and their atomic number dictates what substance or chemical property they have. Carbon for instance has an atomic number of 6 positively charged protons in the nucleus. Atoms are essential building blocks of life, for example the body contains fat which is made up of carbon, hydrogen and oxygen atoms. Carbon atoms because of their unique make-up also bond strongly to other elements such as hydrogen, oxygen and nitrogen because they have branches or rings of various sizes that contain thousands of atoms, carbon is quite accommodating with other substances. These have unique atomic numbers that make life possible. Atoms suffer from irreducible complexity because all the electrons, protons and neutrons must be present at the same time in a particular number and order, for the atom to function as a designated substance. This knowledge dispenses with the idea of mutations and natural selection relating to chemical interactions. Life on the earth is based on carbon chemistry. Carbon is used in organic matter such as our bodies for instance in order to maintain life. They silently carry out important chemical reactions within our bodies and they are essential to life on the earth. Carbon atoms make up the sun, stars, comets and the atmosphere of most planets. Carbon is found in coal, oil, diamonds and natural gas deposits. The atom is clearly designed and many physicists now recognise this, but they won’t use the word God or Creator, they would sooner believe aliens were responsible, but the question is then begged who made the aliens? The term atom really means invisible unit or uncuttable, and for a long time it was thought that the atom could not be split, but when they did, it produced the atomic bomb. An infinite intelligence made the various atoms which are so small and are measured as being one tenth of a billionth of a metre across. They are so small that they cannot be seen under a powerful microscope. We are led to believe that all our sophisticated atoms are derived from an invented primordial complex soup of chemicals which then produced the first living cells. Remember each atom is unique due to its composition and arrangement of subatomic particles relative to the number of protons in the nucleus. This is no accident waiting to happen! A primordial soup is purely fictitious and based on fantasy and imagination because men do not want to retain God in their knowledge. Jesus did not lie to us concerning him being the Son of God and the Saviour of the world. He said that men shall give an account for every idle word spoken, except they repent of their sins!

Hell, everybody should be offended by what he says, because he doesn't leave anything out. Often I found myself in his jokes. But I don't feel offended. Because I know he didn't want to hurt me. My 6yo son, with super religious grandparents on his mom's side, asked "what is God and what is heaven?" Prepared for this, as all parents should be towards the tricky questions, I was able to tell him "God is an answer to the question about how am I here, living in this world (i.e. what came before me). Heaven is an answer to what comes next after I die. But the real answers to those questions is that nobody knows. Someone made up God and heaven and someone believed it, just like the Raibow Connection song. If you're satisfied with that as an answer, fine. If not, and if you really want to, try to find out yourself!"

Using distance as an analogy for time he said something like this, “If Christ lived at a time equivalent to a distance just outside the school gate, then the dinosaurs would have existed 300 miles away in Auckland city”. The child thought for a while and then asked him, “ Do the dinosaurs in Auckland eat the people”.

What the fuck are you on about “good person”. You can’t even define what “good” is under materialism / atheism. It’s just atoms. Just electrons. Nothing has meaning. Everything is an accident. Death is funny. Showing your butthole on the internet to lonely men is empowering. Dropping a nuclear weapon on Muslims in the Middle East is justified (Sam Harris). Lol. “Good”. Sigh.

I appreciated when Ricky said "every scientist committed heresy at some point". Going against ignorant superstitious norms was often the way to revelation and knowledge . There is a great movie called The Physician that perfectly illustrates this point. Religious dogma at the time decreed that it was illegal and punishable by death to perform an autopsy on a corps. The Shaw was suffering from what was called side sickness at the time. In order to help the Shaw, he disobeyed the law and performed the autopsy on a patient that had just died from side sickness. He was able to determine that the pain was caused by an infection of the appendix, something we now know as Appendicitis. Who knows how much more advanced medical science would be today if religious dogma hadn't kept it in the dark ages for so very long. I highly recommend the movie.

@@tishie42 It is a tightrope that religious leaders travel with difficulty. If they allow people to progress and think for themselves then they risk losing their best and brightest minds to atheism or deism. If they block progress than other less dogmatic cultures pass them by and, as you say, leave them in the dark ages.

How lovely to have Richard Dawkins and Ricky Gervais together.. Aetheists are so rational/ marvelous!! So many Americans totally rely on 'God'? to get them through life.. never believing they can improve their lives and influence their children to think and plan and work hard to succeed.... 'Preach' you amazing geezers!! Love from 'Julie from Sonning'! 'Berks' people are the most rational ever! And funny! Cheers!

how did you find hope by somebody telling you that you are a worthless piece of matter that somehow was created by chance. where is the hope in you being told that your short life is all that there is and that life is meaningless? dorkins is a deceiver and one would have to be really stupid to actually believe that natures system with all its laws and dependencies just created itself by chance out of nothing. dorkins telling now saying that maybe we were created by aliens is circular and stupid as the next question would be who created those aliens that nobody has ever seen.

That is a profound quote, I like it, I found it a very touching series. My favourite parts were when he would sit on the bench with the lady that had lost her husband, I found the development of that relationship as the series went on truely touching. She appeared as a sage, wise with age to guide this lost light onto the right path. We all need someone like that in our lives.

[Dawkins] This, of course, could easily be a ripe recipe for disaster, as we all have different tastes: For instance: you love your parsnips, but your better half finds them vomit inducing and horrible, perhaps.

@@richardwalton6993 Quite the contrary: One's own "Subjective moral guidance" wins hands-down from "Subjective moral guidance" of those in power (as that is the alternative). Surely you're not implying that the moral guidance should be coming from someone else by default? Advice, from the ones you trust, of course, but then you make up your own mind after that.
