One of the most interesting things about Sonic Frontiers' development is how different the game was before it launched. In this video, I compiled a ton of information about the Sonic Frontiers Beta and earlier stages of development into an iceberg chart. Let's look through it in today's video!

I mean, it kinda does in a visual sense. It's zero personality open "zones" filled with egregious pop in. And yes, the pop in does affect the experience, especially in Final Horizons where it can be damn near impossible to save yourself from falling on the towers

I really hope SEGA gives Sonic Team enough time and budget to fully realize the next 3D sonic game. They had so many cool ideas for open-zone sonic and I want to see it come to life in the next game!

(1:46) the gold enemies are most likely were supposed to be on the 5th Island and Date back to the sonic rangers build and as for the "Ubisoft Trowers" there's nothing left but a part of them when you first play the game and fight your first enemies there's a red glowing wall behind you this is most likely used for the "ubisoft Trowers".

There's also an unused Supreme QTE where instead of him just firing a single shot from his rifle, he would shoot a series of shots that were either dark or light (like in the old final boss/hacking minigame) and to dodge you had to press LB or RB accordingly. He also makes some sick poses while shooting. It can be re-enabled in the HedgeModManager if somebody wants to try it out

They actually brought back the Beta Kronos guardians in a bit of a sense with the Caterpillar+. You can see the similar attacks between Beta Caterpillar and Caterpillar+

@@evdestroy5304 Yeah I noticed that too by the second rewatch. I'm surprised they made a fresh design for Spider+ but didn't use the beta Caterpillar one. At rhe very least they could've changed the names like the previous guardians. Ninja could've been Samurai, Tank = Artillery, Spider = Tarantula etc etc.

I was definitely curious about the Sonic Beta & unused content iceberg. I’m definitely really curious that Sonic Frontiers had some stuff that we going to be in the opening Cutscene. It’s definitely weird how they scrapped chaos Island boss. I’m definitely happy that we got the Knuckles Prologue for Frontiers instead of Knuckles being in the opening cutscene for Sonic Frontiers. I’m definitely surprised that there was lot of Sonic Frontiers beta and lost content. Great video SF Production)

8:54-9:15 Yeah this seems to be the case at least for Sonic because ever since Sonic CD it has been like that. The animated or CG cutscenes are made before the game even is at a certain completion rate, meaning that in Sonic CD there's a part in the end animation that Sonic is in the unused level known as R2 and in the first Sonic Riders in the CG cutscenes the characters designs still haven't been finished yet and don't match the in game character models 6:28p.m. 10/13/2023

It’s interesting to see what was cut or didn’t make it in the final version for Sonic Frontiers due to either time constraints or changing ideas. It’s clear that some things were going to be used much differently than what they’re used for now. The idea of a Titan factory on Chaos Island is especially fascinating to me.

I'm surprised you didn't look into the Sonic Frontiers CGWORLD magazine. It contains photos of a scale model of Kronos Island's heightmap, with Giganto's arena completely missing and unique land in its place. It also has an extra long cliff near the caterpillar forest, and a completely removed island near the northwest corner. There are remnants of this in the files - namely, there's a "wind map" and "fog map" that depict this even earlier version of Kronos.

I’m really curious to know what the planned ending of the game was originally going to be like. Cuz we know that Kronos (and Rhea and Ouranos), Ares and Chaos, but those are only 3 Islands. If the world ship was originally the final “island”, how would the original final boss have turned out? Would Supreme even exist in this version of the game? How would The End’s boss fight play out? I guess we’ll never know

I would guess for The End boss fight that instead of Sage piloting Supreme to shoot down The End in space, she would pilot the worldship with Sonic. That would also explain why her dialoge suggests taking over the controls of said ship.

It's still hard to believe in less than a month from now it will be the year anniversary when I first played and this change has had a huge impact in my life in the past year I have been with this game since the days of the first teaser and game play footage and has gotten me back into video games with it also has put my faith back into the franchise I have been into Sonic mostly out of the franchises I like and it's thanks to this game Sonic Frontiers will always be my favorite video game playing it and watching I will forever treasure this game till the day I die awesome video you did a fantastic job keep up the amazing work my friend:)

The leak shown in the video mentioning the ghost girl that gave you rings, also mentioned that it was against a giant tree boss. Given the comment about Amy, this most likely was Giganto, but it's hard to believe someone would mistake Giganto for being a tree. What do you think happened?

Man seeing these footage makes me remember back when this game got announced on Sonic Central like everybody was anxious as to what type of game would it be and would it be bad or good and once it got revealed on the Game Awards I was so excited like finally a Sonic game with free movement after so long like I still can't believe it... Also sidenote You forgot that at one point Sonic's Parry used to be a lot harder to perform leading to one of the playtester to ask the devs to change it it could've been similar to how perfect parry was handled on Update 3

Great video as always. Question. Do you think if Sonic Team had more time to develop Update 3, we could've seen the return usage of the Ancient's Worldship? Story wise, I could see them importing it as a final secret area on hard mode to advance the story to fight The End. Or maybe upon completing all Cyberspace challenges with an S Rank the ship becomes accessible. There you would find Master King, and he'll congratulate you for your accomplishments. As a fine reward he'll grant you the ability to utilize Super Sonic (Like how he did when fighting the Titans), but for free roaming.

It really seems like they had a great vision going into this game, but for whatever reason weren't able to fully realize it. Seeing that a lot of the beta builds didn't have the Memory Token obstacle courses and puzzles puts the fact that they're all just floating platforms and rails into context. I really like the more momentum/ramp based designs they started using since Update 2, and I just sincerely hope in the next 3D Sonic game we can get similarly designed segments that are actually part of the environment and not pasted in out of random platforms because of time or money constraints.

Hello SF productions, I love your content and this video was really fun. This was really informative of background info and fun facts. One fact that I feel you may have overlooked or missed are the grave/manorial sites all over the game. In many ancient and native cultures. The meaning of stacking rocks is to symbolize where someone great, valuable, and loved has died or where someone was berried. Today it is used to guide travelers from getting lost, but we’re talking ancients. At a time of destruction. It might also symbolize to a god that they appreciate them or mean peace. Do you think those rocks are there to symbolize the countless people lost or tell a god: the god of death aka the end they mean and want peace? Also, the taller the stack the greater and more meaningful the person. Maybe now you’d think twice before pushing over another stack in frontiers. Frontiers actually got a little dark but suggests some of the ancients beliefs or traditional mourning process. I find that very deep and interesting yet simple.

I honestly think it sucks that these games have to be multiplatform. Because as big as a Nintendo fan as I am, the Switch is the culprit for the constant downsizing and reworking. I love the obstacle course free roaming still we got in the final version, but I wish these devs got to work on just similarly powerful hardware.

One thing that was (debatably) left out was the pink hair girl from Tails Tube. In an episode of Tails Tube, when talking about humans in the Sonic world, mixed in with all the Unleashes characters, there's a girl with pink hair. She has no prior origin, and when someone asked Ian Flynn about this, he responded with "#KnowingSmile" so obviously it was supposed to be something. Many people assumed this meant she was gonna appear in Frontiers. But this didn't happen I say this was "debatably" left out because it might not have been a Frontiers thing. There's a chance she's for something else we haven't seen yet. But who knows. (There *are* rumors of a new Sonic next year, maybe she's for that??)

It is confirmed that a Multiverse exist in the Sonic world. You can talk about the potential stories Sonic Team can create in the future sense multiverse movies are all the rage now. Maybe Sonic can meet an alternate version of Tails who became Infinite instead of the Jackal Squad Captain. We can learn the fates of the other Shadows from the non canon endings of Shadow the Hedgehog 2005. We can see a world where the echdinas never died. Even Sanic and Sonic.exe can make cameos.

It is hard to wait, but I would rather have a delayed game then one that was rushed and stripped from what it could have been. Same with movies. By the way rip Tails’s homing attack! I get the wrench, but Tails needs that homing attack! And I noticed in the video Sonic had extra speed boost circles is that a mod or can you actually get that in the game?

Sonic Team couldn’t do it because of how strict SEGA was. They literally had left them for dead and then Frontiers brought the light. (Actually, it was the second movie as well as Colors Ultimate which generated extra currency that brought it to their attention.) I am so upset and dissatisfied now, knowing that maybe there could’ve been so much, much more to this game that actually would’ve made me like this more than Sonic 06. If anything, I just want games at their very best. Not shortened with the downplay of its potential.

Considering that Solaris took 3 super powered hedgehogs to beat, and Ian confirmed The End is second strongest to Solaris, it could've been a great implementation. Plus the master emerald seemed to play a more important role during the Rhea scenes. And Knux managed to use a Cyberspace portal to get to Starfall during Divergence. So they could do all that for Hyper. But I'm glad we got update 3 anyway

I remember those days without sleeping wondering how they're going to implement one my favorite franchises into open-world, EVERYDAY (not joking) searching on the 4Chan to see those leaks and rumors on how the game runs, since 2019 hearing about the Sonic Rangers game, until May 31st when they released the teaser gameplay, good times. 💙

@@SFproductions1Saying "the beta" like that drives me nuts, it's a real pet peeve of mine ngl. Beta actually refers to software that's roughly feature-complete but still needs debugging to reach a presentable state. "Prototype" or in particular "pre-alpha" would be more appropriate wording for a theoretical version of Frontiers with a playable original Kronos - however, I would be surprised if that ever existed.

No, because those builds would have been long before all of the eventual planned content would have been implemented. Those builds would probably be prepared specifically for those playtests, using whatever Sonic Team had fully finished by that point. Granted, their historical significance is high and the desire to find and release them even more so. An actual beta would be from the final months of production, where the content was all laid out and in a mostly completed state out but bugs were yet to be fixed and last-minute changes not yet implemented - go check out Sonic 2's article on The Cutting Room Floor for an example of this.

It makes me want to cry seeing how cool some of the beta concepts were, like the better island designs and the environments from the CGI cutscenes. I wish SEGA could make a new DLC that brings back beta elements and ties the whole game together, bringing back the awesome beta environments seen in the unused CGI cutscenes and what not. I don’t think it’s possible since it’d basically be rewriting the entire game, which is harder to do than say Final Horizon where it was just the ending that got changed. Either way, hope SEGA learns from Frontiers and it’s beta to make their next 3D Sonic game one that tops the rest. Honestly- now that I think about it, they could make a DLC that closely follows the beta- or the CGI cutscenes, at least- and just call it one of Sage’s many predictions/outcomes. Also, don’t get me wrong, I love Frontiers. The betas seem cool, but…I love the final, too. It’s still fun and I do still like the story. It’s just sad that we lost so many cool concepts.

What sucks is how normal this kind of is for games. Stuff gets cut, budgets have to be stretched, and schedules must be kept. Time gets lost because making one thing work may take longer than planned or break other things. Betas are fun to explore.

Tbh sonic rangers was a better fitting name especially with the final update. Its clear they wanted to make a ranger group where you play all the 4 characters but they coudnt do shit between the time constrainsts and developing an open world

The beta of Frontiers is so intriguing because it seems like the game took a DRASTIC turn in development sometime in the last year as all the teasers and whatnot were made before Kronos was split into 3 islands, all the floating platforms and stuff were added to the islands, and seemingly a lot of the story was changed a lot. A lot of the problems with the final game exist because of this last minute shift, so if they didn’t make this shift the game likely would have been a LOT more polished. But at the same time it might not have been as fun without all the, admittedly shallow, platforming challenges in the open zone. So who knows. I’d love to see a full beta restoration mod.
