This is the first of several videos to come as I work and do repairs on the Covel 7B Surface Grinder. Theres much to be done on this little machine but I will be taking my time with it, working a little at a time.
In this video I remove the table to clean and inspect the ways for wear and damage. I also set the table up in the Do-All for the broken bolt removal. I use some left handed drill bits for the bolt removals.
Don't foget I now have a store front for Abom79 and Shop Life t-shirts, always available all the time.

I am so old and pathetic these days... I look forward to a highlight video on Abom79 drilling out broken bolts... I never would have believed it back in my 30's or even 40's.... Great job Adam, thanks for posting it so I can have something to do other than sit here and watch my moustache turn grey... ROFL !!!

Just finishing up a Covel #6 cutter and tool grinder. Pretty much complete and in good condition. Missing the fine adjust for the table but that’s a fairly simple part to copy. Covel seems to have had their own way of doing just about everything.

a tip for the stuck screws. start with dull right hand bit to start the controlled friction heat. this will compress the rust when expands let cool backs out easier .........

For all the learning I've been able to apply from attending your shop class: I thank you!Now, for any time a broken screw has a nub sticking above the host surface (especially with the small screws) I cut a slot in the top of it with a Dremel cutoff wheel. Then just unscrew it with a flathead screwdriver. I can see why an endmill & lefthanded drillbit were your go to for this. Once the 'nub' is even with or below the surface, your choice was inevitable. Keep up the good work!

It looks like you have a fun project going there. Don't worry about the painting, it might look nicer, but that is not what makes it work. A rusty hammer works just a good as a new one. Have fun with the restoration.

Just a note about left-hand drills.You can sharpen a regular drill bit backwards to grab a bolt to get it out,of course you cant actually drill very deep with it, but it will do in a pinch

Adam, I bet you are correct about the wet system and the holes for another cover. With a cover and a lip on it the coolant would be directed back into the slots in the table and then into the drain/return hole or line versus dribbling over the edge of the table and going into the ways! Great watching your vids as always! Regards, Eric

I think all those fasteners are for shop applied guards or a wet system as you show. I have a Boyar Schultz that came with a shop made tin hood/box, that was screwed, riveted, and gooped all over with silicon. From the debris I cleaned out of it, they were cutting wet. Nice work extracting all those screws. Ill be watching eagerly for updates on the Covel.

Is a scraped iron surface really what you need for rollers to ride on? I would think hard and shiny would be ideal. You could use that powder you use for building up bearing journals, then scrape or grind it down level with the unworn edges.

For those wondering, the factory hand scraped these ways when it was built new.
@duobob
@duobob 7 жыл бұрын
The machine has been converted from plain ways to roller ways. The ways originally used to rub on each other like a lathe or a mill does. The wells had oil in them and springs and rollers to transfer the oil to the ways originally. The grinder can be scraped in to be returned to that configuration, or the rollers can be used. Not sure how those rollers and ways will look when carefully inspected. It is very common for rollers and ways to be severely damaged by transporting the machine with the table on it, which leads to the rollers being pounded into the ways, leaving a bunch of dinged up parts. The roller ways have less friction, which is nice for a manual machine, unless you want Popeye arms -- wait, you already have them!

Very content rich, the new music is refreshing & uplifting! Why do so many REAL machinists NOT use penetrating oil?
@leebarnes655
@leebarnes655 7 жыл бұрын
Penetrating oil is hygroscopic, which means it attracts water from the air to the metal you don't want to rust in the first place. Best to use real oil which doesn't attract moisture right out of the air. Better to clean penetrating oil off first though as it may leave hygroscopic salts behind. To everything, there is a purpose.
@Abom79
@Abom79 7 жыл бұрын

Hello Adam I would not regrind the top surface whit this machine where the magnetic chuck mount. the reason is that when you dont have a perfet geomtrie you would grind a bow ever so slightly or somthing in the surface... it is complex you should check this yourself but consider this... only caution nothing more... great regards:)
@TheMetalButcher
@TheMetalButcher 7 жыл бұрын
It's pretty common practice to do so. Especially after rescraping the machine.
@MrMrMeile
@MrMrMeile 7 жыл бұрын
Yes I agree, after rescraping it is absolutely fine... before rescraping not so much... the grinding of the chuck after mounting is normal, but the mounting surface for the chuck? i would consider this surface as important which has to be absolutely flat... so if the axis is out and travels a bow, do not transfer the bow to the top Surface by grinding the mounting surface... this make it only worse all in all...

If your pushing down on the screw with the quill and left hand drill how can it unscrew (up). Perhaps light pressure with a hand drill (in reverse) and that drill into the starter hole and the screw action would be strong enough to push up. I see it worked once for you though. I didn't catch how it was able to fight the quill pressure. Were you just pecking at it hoping it would catch and follow on the up stroke??I always find your work interesting and well rounded. Keep it up. Thanks
@joshua43214
@joshua43214 7 жыл бұрын
There is a ton of slop between the drill bit and the lever. The drill grabs and pulls down into the work and takes up the slop, you just have to watch for it and back the lever off as the screw comes up.
@Abom79
@Abom79 7 жыл бұрын
+Dave Sage once the drill catches the bolt and it starts to unscrew it pushes the drill up naturally, You just keep downward pressure on the drill to keep unscrewing it.
@davesage9190
@davesage9190 7 жыл бұрын
Obviously it works. I saw the results on one of the screws. I guess it depends how much downward pressure you applied. I would have thought with enough pressure to get the drill to work the screw would just come up and get drilled more rather than be able to work against the force you can apply with the quill. I guess you have to finesse it. No Abom torque there I guess :-) Thanks. I really enjoy your videos.
@TheMetalButcher

Yep. Just don't push too hard, and it will back out and raise your hand with it. Just keep enough pressure to unscrew it.

i find oil when its a thin film left for a long time, polymerises and make a sticky film, very hard to remove as solvents wont do it alone, like lineed oil is meant to dry, the leftover parts of mineral oil seems to do the same, plus being filled with grime and metal its pretty nasty, you have to scrape it off with a sharp tool and probably scothbrite to stand a chance, the rollers will need extensive soaking in some solvent as well to get under them

+mega, i know with both linseed and other veggie oils, once it polymerises fully, its solvent proof, nothing dissolves it, if you really wanted to mess up a machine, change its oil for boiled linseed oil! adams machine may have sat a couple decades and what with the oil already in it being ancient and unloved, thats the result.

What does nr 8 on the tap refers to? An other question. When it comes to drills there are "number drills" like 24, 19 and so on. How is it conected to the inch system? Questions from a metric guy😉 Thanks for a great chanel!

It's a screw size. We have screws from 0 up to 12. From 12 it goes to 1/4". Numbers drills also help fill out the decimal sizes in between the fractional sizes, but only covering the smaller end of the spectrum, same with letter sizes, they fill in sizes around the fractions. Maybe I'll talk about that on shop talk.
