You were a life saver tonight. I found a hardboard thin cake board and followed your instructions. I also covered the cake dummy with Trex, so much easier to work with. Covered the 8” diameter x 5” tall like a dream compared with challenges I faced when icing a 4” diameter x 4” tall cake tier earlier today, that was a nightmare! I’m going to make a few more boards in different sizes for future use. Thank you so much for sharing 😇

Great DIY tip ! Especially if you want to re-use the board for another dummy cake.Or use the upside down covering method. Evil Cake Genius has a cake grip tool for dummies. I just hot glue my dummy to the board as most of my cake dummies will be on display for a fair amount of time .

Another fab video. I wonder do you have any tips for avoiding air bubbles. They really are my nemesis. I cover my cakes exactly the same way as you have here and get on grand. Then those perky air bubbles appear. SOS Please help ❤

Thanks for your tuto, brief and clear Please tell me, is it safe to make the bottom tier of a 4tier cake dummy (the 3 others real cake) ? Is it sturdy enough ? Thank you so much
@MrBakersCakeSchool
@MrBakersCakeSchool 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, absolutely. A polystyrene dummy is strong enough to support three tiers of real cake, without any need for dowels. x

Can you use Stork margarine to stick the fondant or does it need to be Trex?
@MrBakersCakeSchool
@MrBakersCakeSchool 2 жыл бұрын
Margarine goes bad, whereas Trex doesn’t really, so I probably wouldn’t risk it… 🤔

As long as you keep in a cardboard cake box to keep it out of direct sunlight and to prevent it getting dusty, it will be absolutely fine. ☺️

how long does the fondant/shortening last before it spoils?
@MrBakersCakeSchool
@MrBakersCakeSchool 2 жыл бұрын
Fondant/sugarpaste doesn’t really spoil because sugar is a preservative, but you wouldn’t want to eat it after it has been sat out collecting dust for a while… 😳

@@MrBakersCakeSchool well not to eat, but to reuse without reapplying a base coat of fondant. I’m planning to use it for cake photography.

Really helpful thanks Rob, gives me confidence to try covering a polystyrene dummy. I suggest naming your invention the 'polygrip' or 'polygrab''. Looking forward to part deux this week, (hopefully please without the distracting music, makes it harder to hear you ...) xx
@MrBakersCakeSchool
@MrBakersCakeSchool 3 жыл бұрын
I have a vague feeling that Polygrip is already a product used to hold dentures in one’s mouth... 🤔😂 Thanks for the feedback. I’ll have a think about the music. I feel it needs something for the bits where I speed things up and drop the sound, but maybe there is a way I can mute it when I am speaking without it sounding too choppy (which is an issue I’ve had in the past)... x
