Louis xvi loved locks more than marie antoinette: Unencumbered with learning how to be kingly at a young age, Louis found himself drawn to the solitary pursuits of lock making and carpentry. The royal locksmith, a man named François Gamain, befriended him and taught him how to make locks from scratch. It wasn’t long before Louis became interested in carpentry and began to make furniture. If his path in life hadn’t been preordained, it seems likely that Louis would have been a simple craftsman rather than a king

Be careful when you ask a Locksmith to pin up a lock for you. They might add some new security features. Counter milling plug and housing, threading yes, stacked springs with 0.015" pins between in a threaded hole most definitely. Happy picking friends from a friendly locksmith. . .

@@engenhokas69 all you need is a Dremel and some of those metal carving bits that fit into the hole. And an M4 x 0.7mm tap or a 6-32 tap for standard pins. Bosnian Bill has a video "DIY training locks" old but mostly good. But way too much filing lol just remove the caps with an awl and small flat head and put a slight fold in them and put them back and use a punch and a hammer to flatten them back into place. It's how us locksmiths do it.

I just received this CI Practice Lock mailed to me by the lovely people at Covert Instruments. I put together a one-pin lock, got out my trusty and brand new medium hook, and got to work. Click on one...and we got it open! * - yes, I really am a lawyer, but definitely not THE LPL. :) Jokes aside, this kit, along with the beginner tools were awesome. I am up to picking three basic pins now and I love it. Thanks so much for getting me into this!

This is very useful for understanding how locks are keyed differently. Many people know that locks are keyed in different ways, but don't understand how. I also recommend people to purchase an acrylic lock to better understand the action of the tumbler and it allows students to equate a visual to the feeling of a pin binding past the sheer line. HOWEVER, it is crucial to graduate to actual locks once one has an understanding of the mechanisms inside a lock. You don't want to practice picking locks that you can see. Buying 2 identical locks that are keyed differently is an excellent way to avoid this. And once they have become able to pick them, begin timing how fast the locks can be opened. For most locks, 4 seconds is acceptable.

When my buddy wanted to learn, I showed him how it works then started locking random things in his house lol you want to get a bowl of cereal? No problem, you just need to pick a lock and chain off every cabinet and drawer involved in that process lmao 🤣 he loved it. But now he's *almost* as good as me 😎 hahaha 😆
