COVID-19 Testing
Many types of COVID-19 lab tests are now available, but which one is best for you or your family. As always, COVID-19 labs should be ordered by your primary care physician are they will be the ones helping you through any diagnosis, contact tracing and treatment that your family needs.
Molecular
Looks for a piece of the virus in your nose, throat or saliva. PCR and other types.
Usually a health care provider will swab you, but sometimes you can swab or spit yourself.
Takes a few hours to run if in office, or 12 to 72 hours if sent to a lab.
Currently is the GOLD STANDARD for diagnosing COVID-19 infection or for ruling out COVID-19 infection.
Antigen
Also known as a rapid test since it takes 15 to 30 minutes.
Tests for a piece of protein in the virus.
Usually a nose swab.
Good for rapid diagnosis of COVID-19 if symptoms or if exposed.
Negative Antigen test does not rule out a COVID-19 infection, must follow up with a molecular test.
Antibody
Blood test at a lab or doctor’s office.
Looks for past infection only. Helpful to know you can donate convalescent plasma and potentially help somebody fight COVID-19.
Can’t be used to diagnose current infection.
As always, talk to your own physician if you have any questions about COVID-19 or testing.
Stay safe and healthy!
