I was a wanna be rancher but was a ocean brat swimming and fishing and crabbing have the sea life was fun. Now we moved to the mountains as the sea got too crowded, expensive and [polluted :( So we raised the kids and homesteaded, hunting, fishing, gardening, rescuing dogs and other animals along with being landlord to a lot of bluebirds and robins, they love our yard so we build them homes, the robins took over our decks, lol. Its been entertaining as we are surrounded by lots of state land in the Catskill mountains so lots of wildlife on a subdivided farm. I turn 61 in a few days, love watching Aus & K and the kids, great fam and lots of great info, maybe one day we will do goats and chickens. Blessings.

Calf sharing also can increase the milk supply. The mother adapts to the amount of milk the calf needs, but milking and a calf taking milk will make her produce more. Hope she gives you two gallons soon. Grasshopper seems easier to come into the stand. She is going to be a super milk cow. If people don't understand how nature works they should lean more about it.

Wow that’s a lot of milk! I’m quite into historic cooking (but with modern appliances lol). 2 of the channels I follow for that have made Parmesan ice cream. That’s on my must try one day list, so if I had excess milk and cream and eggs and had made a Parmesan style cheese that had been ageing for a while, that’s what I would make. Aust, it’s really cool to see this changing from something you need to do to support K and keep her safe, to something you’re actually enjoying.

Gotta completely separate the cow and calf at 24 hours. Far less problems to either bottle feed it or sell it. If she at first doesn't let down, give her Oxytocin on the first few milking sessions then discontinue.

I do the same with my goats. I only have to milk once a day, and no worries about having to bottle feed kids! I make homemade peach ice cream with my extra milk. 2 c frozen peaches, 1 c milk, 1-2 tsp sugar, 1 tsp vanilla. Run it through the blender and you get perfect soft-serve consistency!

I think calf sharing us a great idea. Calves in a commercial dairy are separated from mama on their first day. The colostrum is milked out and given to the calf by bottle. After that they drink an instant milk supplement.
@jay-meabraham2001
@jay-meabraham2001 2 жыл бұрын
My darn goats wouldn't let down unless they listened to soft music, and kids couldn't come in the barn during milking! Sometimes they get smart about holding their milk! Our dairy cow, Ruby, she was just glad for the attention and was squirting milk as she was walking into the stanchion! Grasshopper sounds like a little stinker! We always calf/kid shared. It's to hard to get people to come "milk" but to come throw hay to the cow or the goats and babies...no problem!
@jay-meabraham2001
@jay-meabraham2001 2 жыл бұрын
I of course commented before the video was done but more input for people who think this is cruel or mean. Our milk cows now have been selectively bred to produce more milk than a calf or kids can drink. If they are not milked off they can get mastitis, or blow out the udder, tear the tissues. This year at 4 weeks our doe decided she was done nursing, we had to force her to nurse her triplets, and milk off the excess! We made a ton of cheese! Dam raised babies grow better, and have better immunities! You guys are doing things right, just how I would...😉👍

When my grandparents had a dairy farm in Michigan, they pretty much removed the calves immediately from the mothers. I recall feeding the calves some powdery stuff mixed with warm water (smelled like yeast) out of a galvanized bucket with a nipple on it.

@trixiebelton4604
@trixiebelton4604 2 жыл бұрын
@@Aussie-6869 I’m sure it’s better for the calves to get the colostrum from nursing from the mothers. I can tell you my grandpa had a rather large herd of milking cows. Probably in those days it was about milk production and quantity since he sold all the milk to a local dairy. Especially if the goal is to stay in the black. When I stayed with them and helped with the milking, they were able to milk 3 at a time. I guess later they added additional milking stalls. I know towards the end of my grandpa’s life, my uncle got rid of all the cows. Broke my grandfather’s heart. But I also know, that owning them is a lot of work. Milking twice a day for 365 days a year. There was also a period when a neighboring farm sprayed something on their crops that became airborne and contaminated the pasture. Can you imagine milking your cows twice a day, and then having to discard it, because the milk was contaminated?!
