Hey there Space Cowboys and Space Cowgirls! FIRST AND FOREMOST I want to apologize for my extra tired self during this reaction (had to go back and rewatch). Long day and no sleep will lead to a tired Nahid. The rest of the squad was up though fam. So I hope you all enjoy this weeks reaction to Cowboy Bebop Session 2 Stray Dog Strut. This week we meet the stray dog also known as Ein!

The show is episodic by nature. There's really no overarching plot instead every character gets their own arc and time to shine.

The over arcing story is basically Spikes past catching up to him, but that is not the main focus. The main focus is just this crew trying to make a living and their personal stories.

Yes, it is not a action show or have some plot it wants to accomplish. It is more like a thoughful, philosophical, show about ideas, good and bad, and things you think about.

...but there is a large over arching story. The characters are revealed through action and pretty soon the "why" of each characters attitudes are revealed. There is definitely an overarching story. It's kinda hard for me to understand how someone could watch the series and come to that conclusion, but maybe I'm just misunderstanding
@Ravenh00d

I think the intent is that there isn’t an overarching story, but backgrounds for each character that come back to influence their lives. Their pasts become mediums in order to convey themes because they aren’t the focus of the whole story.
@allyourmoney
@allyourmoney 6 жыл бұрын
There is a major arc for the show & characters but also a lot of episodic exploration of themes between those big beats. The standalone episodes deepen the understanding of the characters & the world they operate in.

It's set in 2071, episodes are called sessions like jam sessions. The titles of some episodes are song titles from famous bands.
@LrnecBuma

Pay closer attention to the sessions nature. Each session is spent with a bounty as the main character. Our gang of characters are the obstacles for them to overcome. The secondary characters. They are witnesses to these bounties lives and experiences which they carry with them as we do the viewer. Look at how impartial, unphased, and like here unappreciative they are of what just happened and then the episode ends it's all forgotten. Look how they behave and handle existence when not hunting a bounty. Then see how it changes if it turns on their own personal history. Everyone seeks meaning and justification for what they are doing in this space. Yet It remains mostly optamistic even at it's darkest.

Fun Fact: The main character, Brendan Fyre, from the film Brick (2005) was actually inspired by Spike. Rian Johnson (director of Looper, The Last Jedi, etc.) was a huge Bebop fan and wanted Joseph Gordon-Levitt to imitate Spike's signature walking motions for the film. It was also his first film, which happened to be under the genre of film noir.

The reason bounty hunting is such a big thing that there are whole tv shows dedicated to it is because hyperspace technology has made it easier for fugitives to go on the run across planetary jurisdictions. Imagine how bad it is to hunt international criminals in the present and multiply that by a solar system. Even with a federalized interplanetary police force, they simply don't have the manpower to track down every criminal who goes on the run. The U.S. faced a similar problem in the time of the Old West due to Manifest Destiny. Hence why bounty hunters are called cowboys.

One thing I love about Bebop is that it explores almost every genre with each of its sessions. And they somehow manage to tie in the overarching plot within each of those episodes. It's an awesome show and worth every second of it. I hope they watch the ending though. I never skip Real Folk Blues.

Also, Big Shots is not a commercial, it's a T.V. show for the bounty hunters. Spike's ship is called the Swordfish, Jet's is called the Hammerhead, etc. This show will not spoon feed you information, you're going to have to pay attention and pick up little clues of their backstories. And, if the 1st episode confused you, you're going to have trouble with the rest...

Mark Geilim The reason I loved the show was because it made you have to be observant to get everything. You CAN watch casually without getting lost, but you get more easter eggs by pay attention.

It's weird to hear people say "the intro reminds me of (insert TV show)." It's pure JAZZ! One of the most influential genres that has every existed and you're relegating it to a couple cartoons lol. Not a huge deal, but it's still funny to me.
@trentb3148
@trentb3148 6 жыл бұрын
Not just jazz, but literally bebop. It's right in the title! But, let's be fair, just because something is influential doesn't mean people are going to know it. After all, people don't need to drive a Model T to appreciate a Corvette.

solodolosolomon I'm a spaniard, my country has little relation to jazz yet in my over 20 years I've never known someone who didn't know jazz. The US literally has a whole city dedicated to it. It'd be like me referencing Big Lebowski because I'm unfamiliar with spanish guitar. Nothing wrong with it but kinda weird
@solodolosolomon
@solodolosolomon 6 жыл бұрын
RagnarTheRed but if they never hear it in their personal life outside of television, all they can compare it to are the shows that play it. Im sure they know what jazz is, but when making a " this reminds me of that" statement, its usually comparing two different yet similar things. The less familiar you are with something the worse you are at comparing it to other things. Just like people who hear bossa nova and immediately think of elevator music.

Hay guys I have a great suggestion trust me it’s great. In 1998 three shows were released in Japan and each is a different version of the theme space western. Cowboy bebop, Trigun and Outlaw Star. Outlaw Star is the most like firefly and they even took a lot of its plot. Cowboy Bebop is the most influential as it is still the most acclaimed anime in the West and Trigun is in my opinion the best and most obviously western themed Trigun is also the one with the most story and you will love it guaranteed. Also Serge will like it the most as it’s got the most mystery and we know he loves his lost

Also each episode is so different as they take from all movie genres and music genres. No spoilers but definitely look up all the movies/pop culture they reference in each episode. Like episode 2 was referencing "Game of Death" when Kareem Abdul Jabbar fights Bruce Lee (Who is the fighting style most influencing Spike)....stuff like that. That being said enjoy the ride and look forward to the episode that seems to hook everyone in (We who have seen it know the ep I'm talking about.

Before they get to episode 22 they need to watch the cowboy bebop movie, it fits the canon between episode 22 and 23. And its a great stand alone movie.

Disagree strongly. The movie is written for people that have seen the entire series. The lines from two characters won't have the same impact any other way.

Actually the movie takes place between 22 and 23. I honestly think the movie serves better as a book end, a final adventure with the characters you love. It was made after the show with the expectation that most viewers already saw the show. It mirrors and echoes the show's themes almost too well that it can easily provide too much foreshadowing for the show's ending. The show stands well enough on it's own and isn't served well by inserting a cinematic event into the middle of it. They totally should watch the movie because it is really fun, but it should be watched in release order.

allyourmoney Well canonically it takes place between the 22nd and the 23rd episodes in the series. And therefore would only contain references up to episode 22, so what im suggesting is for them to watch through to episode 22 and then watch the movie next, and the watch the last two after the movie.

I know it takes place between 22 & 23 but the THEMES explored in certain conversations accompany a BIG event after those episodes. I can't go further for danger of spoilers, but the dialogue between certain characters is really tied in to the nature of that big event. It's not just random philosophizing.

allyourmoney If you mean the conversation between ss and eo then I'd say it makes the last 2 episodes more meaningful rather than take away from the experience. But i get what you mean watching the series makes the movie scene more meaningful. But if you are talking about ss and vv then that raises a similar response to the one above. But that's just what i think.
