I was just thinking that too. I was looking at it and thinking to myself "That looks too husky and broad to be a coyote. That's not a coyote. That's a wolf!" Look at the carving of his ears and the lining around the eyes. That's definately a wolf, not a coyote. Which I know you already knew that, lol.

I saw something that looked similar to this in Greenburgh NY. Everyone kept telling me that it was probably a coyote but he looked big, longer than a coyote, fatter and had more fur than coyotes. I was convince it was a wolf from doing a little research and reading some of the comments here i now believe that it was a Coywolf.

A study showed that of 100 coyotes collected in Maine, 22 had half or more grey wolf ancestry, and one was 89 percent grey wolf. And that's just in the sate of Maine. The theory now is that the large eastern "coyotes" are actually hybrids of the smaller western coyotes and grey wolves that met and mated decades ago as the coyotes moved toward New England from their earlier western ranges. DNA testing on western Coyotes shows little or no DNA from Gray Wolves.

The reason I think this isn't an ordinary coyote is that it's looking staight at the man like a dog. Coyotes mostly aproach with their noses pointed down, it's unique to them. This one's gotta be a hybrid of some kind. He no doubt heard those tantalizing turkey calls and thought he was gonna get dinner.

Coywolves have benefited from the wolf genes they acquired from wolves from the standpoint that they use their environment differently and now hunt larger prey because they themselves are larger and bolder. While it might help to thin deer herds, I think this is also why you are starting to hear about more incidents involving coyotes stalking humans and even attacking them.

For the people saying it was too brave to be a coyote, coyotes are the ones that are not so afraid of people, who have adapted to even living in the suburbs with people. Wolves are very shy and you would be very hard pressed to see them approaching a person at all. Even the researches who follow wolves with tracking devices barely ever get a chance to see them cause they are very shy.

I have 40 acres near White Cloud, Mich, and lots of woods around us, we also have a pack of coyotes in our area, and they tend to stay away from us, and if they see me out back, they run away. They have been around our area for years, they will go after small animals "small dogs, cats, or fawns". Never had one attack a human, had one in a party store in Grand Rapids, poor animal was scared to death, but DNR caught him safely and took him back into the wilds.

actually, Coyotes are dangerous when they get accustom to humans, so if you are in a suburban setting and a coyote is wandering into your backyard, you could be in danger. If you live in a rural area, and the coyote doesn't usually see humans, and you run into one in the middle of the woods, it'll just walk away, or RUN away. I live in the country, and I've literally been in front of a pack of 6coyotes, up here, stamp you foot and make a noise, an they run like hell. It depends where you live.

Where was this footage shot? Cause if you were in North Carolina or near there, theres a good chance that's a red wolf or red wolf/coyote hybrid. The two species interbreeding has been an issue with that reintroduction.

Silly people, this man knows what he saw, and what species he has in his area. It's a yote.. No doubt about it. You can get a good look at it's coloring in 1:36. See the red behind the ears and on the muzzle? The saddleback dark grey and you can see the dark tipped bushy tail when it runs down towards him. Just a great furred yote. Wish the fur got like that on them down here in the south. I've never gotten one that nice looking!

This has definately got to be a Coywolf! It's not pure wolf as it's ears are too pointed. Wolves have rounded shorter ears. Coyotes have much skinnier faces and look more like a fox. @marmorala The most noticeable difference is the size. Some coyotes can still be equal in size to your average size dog. If you come across one you don’t have to worry as they are usually very shy. This hunter was in full camo so the coyote did not recognize him to be a human. If you just yell of wave your hands they should dart away.

@philaheen i agree phil. what is very common now due to lack of natural environment is wolves mating with coyotes, this animal has a heavy head, thick set upper body, and 'CLEARLY' a wolf muzzle, zygomatic arc, and broader spread between the eyes! Though the ears look longer, they are not held at an angle. Most coyotes have ears pitched out to the side and slightly backward, like a jackal. Im going with 'wolf' on this one..if not a wolf/yote hybrid!..good call!

Once he had to run out and stop them they had his shepards by the legs and were gutting it. I myself have had to save a 6 month old malamute. They look at them as easy food. @idahochas yeah, idaho those are straight up grey wolves. Eastern wolves were never the beasts that straight up grey wolves are. And fyi, the only thing that separates a wolf and a coyote is one thing. Wolves pack hunt period. Coyotes rarely pack hunt and don't pack all year round like a wolf. Eastern Coyotes stay packed up longer or don't break up at all. They're an inbetween. Not afraid of people, take larger game as a pack. wolves in s.ontario aren't very big either.

Most Coyotes, especially in the Woodlands of the East Coast, range between 30-55 lbs. This Coyote looked fairly big, almost like a Wolf. Usually they are a lot easier to distinguish from their larger cousins, but this one was really filled out. "nicholasbhicks", I've never heard of a 75 pounder, but if they are in fact interbreeding with Wolves, I can see some achieving that size. That's scary to be honest, a 75 lb. Coyote, you might as well be going against a small Timber Wolf.
