After coyote stalked lady and small dog with failed attack, coyote came back to circle cameraman but decide I was to big for him. I had no food on me or maybe I was the food. LOL. I tried to scare off this coyote for 3 weeks (before this video) and called the conservation officer but the coyote kept coming around stalking and growling at kids.

I'm an animal behaviorist (zoologist/ethology)...You weren't in any danger. A few times it was marking territory with it's jaw, so you're in a place where it's communicating with others. I've been surrounded by many coyotes at night in the desert SW where I've run into these behaviors as well. When they flatten their ears and approach you straight on is when you worry. Neat encounter.

That animal is not stalking or threatening. If you have ever seen a coyote stalking, you would easily see that this one is simply curious.

He wasn't trying any attack. He is looking for food. People have been feeding him. If he wanted to attack the little dog with the woman he would have. You're overstating the coyote's perceived aggression. When you lay down, you're being submissive and inviting him closer. I like most of your other videos but I think you're way off base on this one.

Lol!! It's you again. I just watched your "stalking lady and dog" vid and then clicked on this not knowing it was the same cast of characters. ;) I swear you just have yourself a confident, curious animal that hasn't had a particularly bad experience with humans yet (probably the opposite-probably fed by humans) and is relaxed around them. I don't think this handsome animal is out to attack anyone. Maybe just enjoy observing him with out the dramatics. Lol

Haha this is hilarious! He actually thinks a coyote would attack him! The Coyote is probably just curious or its wondering why this guy is making a fool of himself. There was a court case here in America where a poacher tried to tell the judge the coyote attacked him, but the judge and scientists on the case didnt fall for it.

You are correct about most coyotes, but read up on the Eastern coyote. Here is what Wikipedia said and there is more in the article. A study showed that of 100 coyotes collected in Maine, 22 had half or more wolf ancestry, and one was 89% wolf. The large eastern coyotes in Canada are proposed to be actually hybrids of the smaller western coyotes and wolves that met and mated decades ago, as the coyotes moved toward New England from their earlier western ranges.[23]

This coyote is used to people and is probably fed by them from time to time. He doesn't seem dangerous as he is curious but he has a tough life living in an area so saturated by humans with little room to roam unnoticed. If he doesn't really bother anyone just leave him alone, no need to find a way to justify killing him like we do for so many animals under the guise of so called "sport." And before you idiots can call me a liberal, I am a conservative, so save your breath...not all people against the wanton killing of wildlife are not mere liberals.

I live in Vancouver and have seen many Coyotes while walking home from work at night. Have also seen them in plain daylight while driving in a car. Seen 2 at one time before. I haven't seen any in a while though. They go after small prey and not adult humans. They are more scared of humans than we should feel threatened by them. Definitely don't feed coyotes. As for this video the coyote is not stalking or hunting you but simply is being curious about what you are doing.

I don't think he is stalking you,he is browsing and looks to me as if he is hoping for a handout. He looks to me like a coyote who has become somewhat socialized in that built up area and probably has people who has fed him in the past. If he were stalking he would be hunting in a group and clearly behaving in a very loud and menacing way.

Brings back wonderful memories of my working at Forest Lawn/Glendale. A coyote pack roamed the grounds for food during late night/early morning. Although told not to, and not being afraid of them, I got (2) of the (6) trained to come to me. I'd park the truck, call them by names I'd given them and give them food. I didn't tell my day supervisor; once when he came to the truck, my supervisor flipped out when he saw all my coyotes alongside it, their waiting for me to feed them. Miss them so much.

The only thing that scares me about this coyote is that fact that he is NOT afraid of humans or the city life. He is probably living on house cats and stray dogs. Need to get him trapped and get him out of there or kill him. When he runs out of cats and dogs he will start on toddlers and old ladies.

Did some coyote research and found that if you allow these animals to come close to you or if you feed them they will eventually lose their natural fear of humans. This will most certainly ensure an attack on a young child at some point. Then that will ensure the coyote is shot dead by state wildlife officials. A loss for all involved including the coyotes life.

Few weeks ago I encountered an Eastern coyote (or should I say "Coywolf" since all of the coyotes here in the eastern to Atlantic regions have varying degrees of Grey wolves in them) while walking by Lake Ontario and tried to use the same method as you did but instead of circling me the Coywolf took off at full speed before i could pull out my iphone. There's a huge difference between your western pure coyotes and my eastern Coywolves temperament-wise

Most of the coyotes here have mange and it seems to start at the tail. Unfortunately these animals have a slow painful death and end up dying in the winter when the mange gets severe. I have seen 7 different coyotes in one week before. They may look the same but they are not, after a while you can tell the difference. Like this video - I called this one scare face.

I have come across coyotes a couple of times. I have found them very shy as they slink around. I have been as close as you in this video but I was not circled. I would not have gone down on my knees to try to draw him close as you did. I think it likely that this coyote was fed by someone and it was looking for another hand out.

I had a coyote follow me from the bus stop to my front door. It was in the summertime in broad daylight. It didn't attack, just kept pace with my walking. Came up the driveway and up the steps to the house. I closed the glass screen door and we both looked at each other in confusion. My instinct told me he needed some food. So after we looked at each other for a minute, he turned tail and left. I wasn't actually afraid until I got behind the glass screen door, funnily enough. But I am naturally observant, and knew he was following me from the start. The other thing is, animals, whatever they are, birds, foxes, and mice come to me to communicate. I suppose I can add "coyote" to the list!

Coyotes do attack humans, especially children. If these were wolves living in our neighborhood going after people, their children and their pets then everybody would feel differently and want something done. When my son was young I had a coyote come after us in a park and two Grandmothers (who were there with their grandchildren), helped me scare it back enough so we could leave and get in our cars. Several people had the same thing happen and we all called in about it. It finally it attacked a little girl on the swings and pulled her off. Poor little girl had to have a shot and stitches and then they finally came and killed it.

I agree by the look of his tail he may have mange. I am in Chicago I see behavior like this when people make the mistake of throwing tid bits of food to them, not saying the camera did just saying looks like some one may have. As for Coyotes being dangerous most won't attack, I been stalked while walking my dog I have two one a friendly outgoing hippie type lab and the other a mutt with a huge prey drive of about the same size, funny how the coyotes can tell, when walking the lab they come in close, when walking Dodger they clear out even though he does not bark or growl

If you know anything about Canines in general (Wolves, Coyotes.. even domesticated dogs), lying down is most likely seen as submission, and I wouldn't doubt if he was also curious about you, too. But if you act as if you are sure of yourself (confident), and assertive (and dominant), he'll be less likely to want to "tango" with you.

@cateyes221981 Actually, large northern coyotes from the upper Midwest(Michigan, Wisconsin, Minnesota), or the Northeast, often hit 50lbs, and animals over 60 are not unheard of. While in most of the southern and plains states, they are indeed the size you quoted...large ones in the northern Tier(outside of wolf territory in the great lakes, where wolves take over that niche), can indeed at least on occasion, hit those larger weights. Largest I've personally seen was around 55.

He saw you fall and wondered what is this near me and was trying to getg closer to figure it out. He wasnt thinking you as food and since aparently hes in teh area alot he must be used to humen interaction and also seemed like he was waiting for you to feed him.

This coyote was not playing, or just curious, or just doing his own thing... he was looking for prey and if given the right opportunity, he would have gone after the dog/lady/cameraman. He was a clear threat to public safety. Coyotes are beautiful creatures and I HATE having to put them down (usually due to showing symptoms of rabies/distemper) but all wildlife should have a healthy fear of humans, for our safety and their own.

Give me a break Bruce. This coyote isn't sick. It's winter and this is its winter coat coming in. I have a coyote in my home. I adopted it from the animal shelter at 3 months old. At that time they said it was a Shepard mix. I had no reason to doubt it because she was blonde with a saddle. Two months later her coat had changed, her color, she was standing on her tip toes and crossing her back legs and using them as one. For the last nine years she has been so loving. She has bitten no one in her life. She's almost 10 years old now. Let's get facts straight Bruce. Wolves are aggressive and dangerous. Coyotes are scaredy cats to an extent. The only time the they get aggressive is when they feel threatened. Like when you walk into their territory. Or to protect their pups. So forth and so on. People don't usually see coyotes because they hide. They are more afraid of humans. Seems to me that this coyote isn't stalking little old women, their dogs and you. It's you stalking it.

You did a disservice to the coyote and human population by acting casually. Both are safer if they have a general fear of humans, so it's good to act big and loud to scare them away. So, obviously something happened as they crossed this way. This coyote looks to me just to be curious if you have food. My best friend had one come within 3 feet of him, but it was after a dog that was with him. He said the animal just ignored his presence - he killed it for that reason.

I live in a small town on the Olympic Peninsula in WA state. There are so many coyotes here it's insane! Right here in town. Of course they're out in the county also but I hear them and see them in town night and day. I hate when people put up lost dog and or lost cat signs. I know they will probably never see their pet again. I's such a big problem here that I would think everyone would know by now and keep their pets inside. And be with them when they go out. I have lost 2 cats to coyotes and so has my daughter. Coyotes aren't as afraid of people as they used to be. I'm almost 64 and lived out in the county in very rural areas mostly. I have seen plenty of coyotes and they are known to be shy. Not so much anymore though. It's been on the local news that they have made aggressive moves on small kids and even adults in parks that border cities like Seattle. I don't trust them at all. My friend was riding on a trail that runs both in and out of town. Not far from her house her hose stopped and not 15 feet away just off the trail was a coyote. It just stood there watching as she filmed it. She made a move and sounds because she didn't want to back down. So it walked away slowly, like not a care in the world. I'm glad my kids are grown adults.

+Traci Scheelk I'm sorry for your loss also. My daughter lost 2 and then the 3rd one, omg she was so special. Small but quick and independant as heck! But so sweet. They always kept tabs on her and though she went out during the day and somewhat supervised, she was always in at night. I lived in my travel trailer behind their house and one night I stayed with a friend. Came home and they were outside. I walked over to her and her husband and my daughter said Itty-Bitty didn't come in all night. I knew right then and it was like someone just reached in and jerked my heart right out of my chest. I was living outside of a little town before that when I lost my Baby Girl and Deuce. In a trailer out in the woods. I had a window open all the time and made it so they had something to climb up on and could come through the window when they wanted or needed to. I could hear the coyotes every night. I would go out and bang pots and lids thinking I was scaring them off. But after my cats were gone a friend was over and we walked out in the brush and trees behind my place and not 25 or 30 feet behind my trailer we could see where they'd been hanging out, laying down and whatever. Watching my cats probably! I don't like them anymore. People used to hunt them and it kept the numbers more balanced. But the only way one can shoot them now is if you're a farmer and they come on your land say like when the cows are having their calves. Cuz they are trying to get the babies. When my son in law is haying on the family farm the coyotes are thick! They are after all the rats, mice and rabbits that are disturbed by the big mower. It's a cruel world I'm afraid. Check this out...we have so many deer in town it's dangerous to drive around at night because they walk right out in front of you. It's insane how many there are. My daughter in law got a almost medium size dog and so she puts a leash on and walks him twice a day. Damn deer charged them! Scared the heck out of her. She saw it and was staying across the road and there were no new babies and none close by. But something rattled that deer! They can beat the heck out of a person and their hooves are sharp. There's YT videos on that also. Ya know I always say I won't get another one cuz I will have a broken heart one way or another. But though it took some time I do have another cat. I'm a glutton for punishment! Take care. Sorry I didn't mean to write a book!

Traci Scheelk I have never heard of deer attacking or charging at people. Unless I suppose one feels threatened or maybe during mating season. Males can be aggressive toward other male deer but I don't know about people. I stay out of their way but they will go right up to an open window where I saw a woman feeding apple slices to a mom deer and her yearling. The cat I have now will be 13 in June but I've only had her since she was 10. The family before me had her since she was tiny. The lady had allergies and said they were getting worse so she had to get rid of her. They also had busy lives, kids and a couple of big dogs! So the cat was in the way a lot and in fact she said they kept her and her food and her litter box in a bathroom for the last 8 months they had her! She was scared when she came to live with me. I gave her space and time. She would let me pet or brush her about 3-5 stokes and then just attack and draw blood. She had a flea collar on when I got her and the lady gave me some spay on cleaner because she said she didn't clean herself. As soon as she left I took the collar off and threw away all the toxic stuff she had given me. She began grooming herself a few days later and the she was puking up hairballs. But that was temp. Now hwe fur is soft and shiny and she hardly ever has fur balls. She used to go outside at her old home if she wanted. But then they began to leave her in the bathroom. With me she is very content to stay in though she loves to sit in her favorite overstuffed chair and look outside at times. She had really no personality when she arrived. Now she talks to me and loved to be brushed and or petted. Best mannered cat I've ever had. No way will she get up on a table or counter! She just won't. I still can't hold her in my lap but maybe in time. I can pick her up and hold her for a minute and I know when she's had enough. She hasn't scratched me in well over a year. One problem I do have is she won't use a scratch post or anything and is starting to scratch the carpet in a couple places. It's pulling some of the carpet out so I have to figure something out for that. Thank you so much.

+Traci Scheelk I have adopted a 10 year old female cat who had been abused and neglected. She will be 13 in June. She's very happy to sit in the window and watch the world out there. She has no desire to go out although I understand she was an outside cat before. She can't replace my Baby Girl and or Duecy Boy. But I love her too.To free up my heart it took someone telling me that my 2 little furry family members wouldn't want me to be sad like I was. It made sense. They never liked it when I was down. I'm so sorry about your Thumper. I know the pain. Take care.

And this coyote seems particularly bold, and in the daytime?!? I would fear illness, if I saw an animal acting like this in daylight.

The first thing is this is not an attack strategy. The coyote is curious yes, and you are correct that it will come closer if you lay on the ground. But it is showing many wary behaviors, not aggressive or confrontational behaviors. It shot forward and jumped when between you and the car because it was too close to both of you and was wary of its situation. Secondly, this coyote has a bad case of mange which can lower hunting potential and may make them more likely to be in urban environments.

Im freaking out right now, it was 1:10am yesterday and I heard footsteps behind me... turns out it was a coyote walking down the trains tracks less than 10 feet away from me! No one else was around and he just looked at ma, trotted on by and into the darkness! I ran back to my car right after he walked into the bushes... He was not scared of me at ALL.

Getting on your knees is a stupid idea with an animal like that. Being down lower to the ground makes you look less intimidating and possibly even injured. Coyote was trying to figure out if you were fair game or not.

Attack Strategy? Clearly you know nothing about coyotes. I, however, am an expert on coyotes and their behaviors. I did not see any sign of aggression or hostility. He was clearly curious of the situation and the place where he was.

A KZfaq video has more credentials than me huh? my 32 years of experience and expertise isn't as good a KZfaq video. Huh seems logical to me.

And also. In that video you just told me to watch you can CLEARLY see he is not aggressive. CLEARLY. #1 His hackles are not upright like you would see with a coyote that is hostile. #2 if he really wanted to hurt the man he would have, he wouldn't have just been toying around with him. Coyotes are breed to kill, not saying humans because that is rare and pretty much never happens. #3 The man was obviously not in danger because he was not making any attempt to free him self from the coyote if he was in danger. Please take you mindless comments somewhere else where you obviously know nothing. 32 years of experience studying coyotes and other animals is clearly not enough knowledge but a video is. This world is going down hill fast from people like you.

He's acting more like a stray dog looking for a handout. Maybe he's figured out that people in the park often have food. Looks like a very old coyote.
