Coyote Goes After Small Dog in Backyard

I was video taping this coyote when I heard a small dog barking from a yard. The coyote suddenly stopped then began its search for the other canine. As I was running down the road the small dog stopped barking so I ran faster to make sure the pet was ok. I'm guessing the dog owner had just let the dog into the house as the coyote entered into the yard. The owner was probably unaware just how close their pet became one of the many missing pets in this area. In this particular area in Burnaby there are lot of missing cat and dog signs. Fully enclosing your yard with a good fence can help keep your pets safer. By making yourself aware of coyotes and other other urban wildlife that might be in your area, you can take the necessary precautions that will help reduce any conflicts between pets and wildlife. I was walking a trail behind my house in suburban neighborhood yesterday with my son and toy fox terrier. A coyote came out onto the trail from the bush. My dog started running to it !!!!! Thank goodness my son ran at breakneck speed and got my dog. The coyote did not seem too scared of us but did start to run - but not very fast. I live in Upper Bucks County in PA . The trail was Barrel Run Trail. After watching some of your videos, my dog will ALWAYS be on a leash. My neighbor said she saw the coyote sleeping in my yard a few weeks ago but I did not believe her. I am a little scared now to go out for a walk. I think I will take my dog in the car and go to the park in the center of town for now on. What a pain that is going to be.

I wanted a live frog from the asian market as a pet an my Liberian girl said "Pet no Food yes". Erebody don't have the same culture but we gota come to peace with different sides an walks of life. If a Tiger trainer get killed by the Tiger are we gonna give the Tiger life in jail? Maby you would not me😂

@@stryleyung3891 Oh an I buried my Gerbil in my backyard as a kid an cried. I also buried my snapping turtle after my house wuz arsoned like 9 years ago. He lived till the next morning an died in my care. Smoke inhalation killed him. I was 29 then but i cried an buried him like I did at 11 with my Gerbil. Is that sad enuff 4u

I used to work in a daycare before covid. We had big beautiful windows. One day while rocking a baby. I saw a coyote run through out parking lot with a bunny in it's mouth. We were supposed to take our babies on walks or outside twice a day. After that happened I never took my sweet babies out again. I've seen them more than once too. This was around 12 in the afternoon.

This is old as’f but yea it is nature buuuut! If you leave your dog outside unattended to knowing that coyotes can jump fences & kill your pet then yeah your an irresponsible owner. It could’ve been prevented.

Julissa Cordero own a big ass wolf hybrid like I do. Every time we have encountered coyotes, they drop their head and high tail it out of there. Small dogs don’t have a shot!

A catio would be a great solution here. Catios are great for both cats AND dogs. Just make sure to use coyote-resistant materials and construction techniques.

Lance Cochrane there are coyote rollers to put on top of fences that keep coyotes from jumping over.

Fencing needs to include a roller bar at the top too to keep the coyote from jumping to the top of it and then getting over it.

I always see those missing cat signs on the local mail boxes. People let their cats out despite laws against it. My yard backs onto a conservation area which is a conduit for wildlife. There's a ten foot retaining wall going down to a nature trail. My ninety-five pound Dobe won't even go out if he smells any type of wild predator--won't even go out on the balcony when the coyotes are howling. When we're hiking I carry coyote spray. I've seen the leftovers of coyote meals and sometimes it appears to be the femur of a medium-sized dog.

Coyotes are a real problem around here. My friend's Puggle ran away from their house (near Everett Crowley park) and somehow survived for FOUR days, who knows where, on his own. Amazingly, he found his way back to their house on his own, dirty and very hungry, but otherwise OK. We still get believe he survived that long and more importantly was able to track back to her house! Very thankful it was a happy ending.

I groom dogs part time, and I had a customer who lost a dog to a coyote. Mia wasn't a tiny dog, either. She was a Border Collie mix (they thought papillon) around 40 pounds. Wonderful dog to work with, and a regular every 4 weeks. I groomed her on a Wednesday, and the owner called my employer crying on that Friday to cancel the next appointment because Mia had been killed. The housekeeper saw her get grabbed, ran outside, and the coyote let go, but she died on the way to the vet.

Millions of people do it. Right now the little dog across the street is barking at something. It's chained to it's dog house, totally helpless if a yote decides to make a snack of it. Where I live it's a pretty common practice to get a dog and then just let it roam where ever it wants. My two dachshunds are basically house dogs but they do go outside several times a day. They stay in the fenced hard but that is no barrier to a hungry coyote. If you own pets in an area where coyotes run in packs, you take a chance every time your pets go outside. That is one reason why I keep a loaded rifle at hand.

My uncle keeps his dogs chained to trees. They live in the country where wild animals including coyotes, black bears, and all sorts of animals roam around. Long story short i want to kill my uncle and find those dogs a better home. He doesn’t even feed them everyday.

Hi~Regarding the fence, which I agree is a good idea. However, coyote's are clever, and my aunt in AZ was about to let their little doggie out into their fenced yard (wooden with 2x4's near the top), when she noticed one of those vermin walking along the TOP of the fence looking into the yards as it went.

They often come out during the day on cloudy days or when they are really hungry. Although not that common, we have seen them during the day in CA.

WHAT COMMUNITIES NEED TO DO IS POST SIGNS IN AND AROUND NEIGHBORHOODS WITH THIS ISSUE/PROBLEM. HOMEOWNERS NEED TO EDUCATE THEMSELVES AND WATCH THIER PETS AND VERY SMALL CHILDREN AT ALL TIMES. Coyotes can jump & "clear" a 6 ft fence here in AZ. Hope you showed this video to your neighbor, the owner of small dog that coyote was stalking. They should see how close the coyote was to their house & never let dog out unleashed & unsupervised again. Wow.

We live in Scottsdale, AZ close to the Maricopa-Pima Indian Reservation. Coyotes come down from the mountains looking for water and food (pets). Our cat lost its tail running up a tree in front of a coyote. If you think a fence or wall will keep them out, it better be very high - coyotes are great jumpers. I see them sail over our five foot wall with ease. They come into our yard to drink water out of the swimming pool. They were here long before the urban population - I think we're the invaders!

I forgot to say that I live in Lakeland FL.A coyote sighting here is very rare. Our dogs rarely stay outside by themselves, some one is always looking out for them because small dogs are stolen more often to serve as training dogs for dog fighting clubs around Polk County.

Oh my GAWD! It just hit me when I heard that dog barking and the IMMEDIATE reaction of the coyote. Listen to hunters using a call called the, "pup squealer or screamer"!!! It's shocking to see how fast coyotes will come racing in droves straight for the location of the pup squealer call.

We lived in the avocado and orange groves of CA and packs are a problem...give the cats a way to also get right up to the roof of your house if no trees nearby.

I have seen videos where coyotes can easily climb 8' fences - plus raptors also take many small pets - keep dog on harness and leash and don't let cats out at all

frmacleod Thanks for watching my videos. No, most coyotes are easily scared off but one coyote I encountered was not. This coyote was being aggressive towards my wife and kids while they were walking to school. It was also aggressive towards many people in the neighborhood for several weeks. I have a 25 pound dog and when I see a coyote I will put my dog on the leash right away. Most people don't see coyotes even when there 20 feet from them. It doesn't matter if we are talking about coyotes, dogs, people or some other animal, there are always going to be one bad seed in the pod. Have you had a coyote encounter?

A few days ago I saw a coyote come around the corner of my house and stop at about 3/ 4 of the way out out of the yard when he saw me on my crossing(I am a school crossing guard), . As soon as he saw me, he turned around and took off running. I think he was looking for the two miniature dachshunds we have. We do not let them go outside by themselves with out someone keeping an eye on them.

You should be careful, Coyotes grabbed my neighbor's dachshund leash-and-all while she was walking him on the Prairie Path in Chicago, she never found her loving dog of 8 years. The Coyote population is exploding as their live food sources become more scarce, now they are targeting dogs, cats and children.

+ElRousey glad to see there are still people that use their brains! :) best example for irresponsiblity cat people. they let their cats roam free and clap their hands when they prey on native wildlife all day but freak out when native wildlife strikes back one day. people need to learn its at least them selfes and their irresponsiblity that killed their pets and no one other.

tastedlikechicken IF I were for some reason to have an out door cat in coyote country (I live in Europe) IF I for some reason had to, I would get either a norwegian forest cat since they can get pretty large and are very aggressive or a maine coon who is also very large. Then they will atleast have a greater chance of fighting back.

Jalip07 are you serious you would chose a large breed of cats just to still satisfy your very personal need to let your cat roam free? sorry but this is just insane! how about being a responsible owner and respect the fact to let a pet roam free is just irresponsble? by that logic of yours it would be recommed to own an sibirian tiger because there wont be any native predator that cat beat it and even the very most cars would have a hard time to run over it.

A coyote can jump a 7 ft. fence. If they're hungry they'll come out during the day. The best thing to do is stay with your dog and keep it on a leash. Pick up your dog if it's small. Always be alert and if a coyote comes near raise your arm's and yell. Keep your cat's indoors. Coyotes are normally terrified of human's. Keep your pet's safe. We all have to live together! I've read some reaaly good comments and some real stupid ones. I can't believe some people are so ignorant I feel sorry for their pet's!

I live in SE Az, and you don't have to feed them to make them "comfortable" around humans. It isn't uncommon to see one trotting down a sidewalk in a residential area. My father was out driving and saw a coyote carrying a small dog or cat in its mouth, strolling right down the middle of the road.

Even a fence or high wall do not deter them. I saw one scale a 7 foot wall in an instant. Hawks are even worse.

If you live out in the country you don't own small dogs. As I'm typing this right now I hear a pack of coyotes howling in my back yard. There aren't any fences out here, so your dogs learn pretty quickly when its time to come inside.

We're also experiencing the same thing here in OC, CA. They jump over 9 ft. fences and attack in people's own backyards!!! Our city's AC will do nothing about it! Some of us live within an HOA, where our hands are tied as far as what we can and cannot do with our properties!!!! It's so sad and we feel helpless, even hopeless these days. Most of us NEVER allow our pets outside bc, even when supervised. This is bc our coyotes have become so aggressive, overly habituated and over-populated, that they are attacking small animals even when their humans are present, in their own backyards!!!! :-(( ANY CONSTRUCTIVE SUGGESTIONS?

+Bruce Causier I have coyotes where I live. We have a Chihuahua and two pitbulls. We never let the Chihuahua out by herself so if a coyote tries to get her the pitbulls will attack it. They already killed one coyote that jumped our five foot fence into our yard.

It is not true regarding what you said about coyotes not coming out during the day in the city. My Great Dane and I see them all the time. In fact, my dog has saved other dogs in a park unaware they were being stalked. Coyotes will hunt day or night, not just at night.

I'm a coyote hunter and you're right about coyotes. They love little dogs and cats. The one you filmed here has mange pretty bad and that's why its out in the daytime hunting. The worse the case of mange, the hungrier the animal gets.....

+Gloria Kohli Actually, you are the person that is 'stupid' because you make a statement using a word , 'murder', that you do not know the meaning of and thereby prove yourself to be, 'stupid'. Man murders man. Man does not murder animals, he kills them. Murder is a term man has added to the English language to define a person that has willfully, with malice and forethought, killed another human being, not an animal. Manslaughter is a term added to the English language to define a person that has accidentally killed, not murdered, another human being. Man has yet to be drug into court for the murder of an animal, except in a country like India who will execute a person for killing a cow. Keep this concept in your mind and it might start to clear up some of the nonsense that the media has put in your way of thinking. Hunters kill animals and commercial slaughterhouses kill cattle (and other animals) bred for human consumption, the kind that YOU eat every day, that is if you are not a vegetarian and if you are a vegetarian, my sympathies. Man has, however, been drug into court on charges of poaching animals. And, by the way, a poacher is not a hunter. The poacher still kills animals, but he is a lawbreaker and a criminal because he does not follow the guidelines of the laws concerning the legal dispatch and possession of game animals. If the poacher is caught, he is incarcerated, unlike the hunter who kills animals (either for consumption, hide harvest or predator control) under the guidelines of the state laws who is not incarcerated. Most people are so used to getting their meat from the market in neat little cellophane packages that they forget that someone 'killed' that animal for them. You have actually hired someone to do you killing for you when you buy meat in the store. If you're not just passing the time by making uneducated statements for the world to see and you want to know why hunters kill coyotes, let me know and we can have a civil dialog and I will try to explain. The bottom line is, most Americans live in a little bubble of arrogance fed by too much unproductive, free time, and ignorance fed by the media (liberal news, unrestricted internet, video games, filthy movies, etc.), and I doubt anything I say can turn the tide, but I try.......

In the county where I live here in Ohio a guy just killed 100 coyotes, they are really getting out of hand, we never let our little dog out by herself, if we lose a chicken it would be bad but if we lose our little dog it would hurt my wife to the bone, so we take care and keep an eye on the dog, I don't go out without my pistol and it's not jus coyotes we have all kinds of critters around here, some have two legs (:

My pitbull will bark at them so they don't come in even though he's an inside dog, I've thought of adding another dog since that would help if it does come in, since we have many here by this riverbed! Tonight my dog scared one off tryna grab my Neighbors rabbit

Many people are busy with Family Kids & Work. Unaware that there are coyotes roaming the dark of night, & then let their pet out in their fenced back yards. Not knowing few fences will stop a coyote. We just lost a pet and found out to late that packs of coyotes are roaming the neighborhoods behind us. The neighbors said most had lost pets over the last 2 years and it was getting worse. They say coyotes have been seen using a storm drain to come down into the neighborhood from the hills. Come to find out the city was going to trap the coyotes to thin down the population but were sued by PETA , so the city with drew the plan to curb the coyotes. Their solution was to give you a free whistle if you come to City Hall. My wife just was over in the neighborhood behind us and a lady told her that the other day her husband was leaving for work4:30AM and said a coyote was sitting on the front lawn, he yelled at it but it didn't move....I guess he should have gotten a whistle.

Why were you shaking the camera so much instead of video taping the coyote you could have probably gotten more views if you video taped the dog being taken away

+Eileen Hearn I have had a case that a cat was attacked sitting in a screened window on a bottom floor. Window was six feet off the ground. Cat was ok, had a scratch, the screen had a big hole in it... Client saw the coyote.

holy shit they look like dogs. I'm from nz so we dnt have coyotes ,cougars or any like wild animals.we got wild pigs tho lmao honestly if I was visiting the US and I saw a coyote my dumb ass wld think it's some cute dog and I'll try pet it. glad I watched this iknw what they look like now.

Do not know if a fence is enough protection. There is a KZfaq video here that shows a coyote scaling a rather talk brick wall and try to snatch a dog and carry it over.

Once I have had a dream of a coyote in my garden at night and my mum went outside to have a cigarette and I was in my bed I heard a scream and me my dog and my two brothers and my mum had to go in the shed and lock the door so my dog went outside and the coyote grabbed my dogs leg and try to run away with her but the coyote is dumb and doesn’t know that there’s a hole in the bush that she can easily run away with the dog but us 3 went to the coyote and the coyote drop my dog and saw the hole and ran out of my garden and my dog had a bit of blood but not too bad but she was ok my whole family was ok my mum, dad, me my 2 brothers and my dog all safe and sound. My dog is in profile pic. I will have more dream story’s on my channel. Have a good day

I recently added 4 lambs aND a guardian livestock puppy to my farm. The second night our small farm was encircled by at least 10 coyotes. 10 that we counted. The puppy isn't big enough yet to be a guardian and I was worried about all of them. These were not scared of my spot lights which is pretty weird. I stayed out there with my animals for 3 hours in the middle of the night with a gun. Thankfully I didn't have to use it. I don't like killing animals but I would have if needed. Our neighbor applied and got approval for 4 nights of hunting these coyotes. They didn't see any and they never came back. Every once in a while we hear one or 2 but not 10 like I saw. They weren't scared. I think they were adolescents that were too young to know they should be afraid. And maybe another farmer decided to kill them weird they never came back. I was scared, not for myself. Coyotes around here are small. I look forward to my babies getting bigger and my guard dog to take care of my farm (I will be backing him up anytime he needs me.). It will be a year or so before he's ready to guard by himself. I read some comments about them scaling tall fences. I have a 50" tall fence around my lambs and thought they would be safe. I guess that won't help that much. Sorry for the novel.
