here are some vaguely christmas-like, frosty, forest-filled books - quite a few are inspired by dark fairytales, others are sweet winter romances, and a couple are full of the desolation of the season - cheers xx

I want to watch this right now so BAD, but I'm going to save this for tomorrow for after school! When I come home, freshen up, grab coffee, blankets and play Emma's videos, it makes going through the day so worth it!! It's raining like crazy where I live, and I'm powering myself to go to school tomorrow, just by thinking that after school the alone time will make it worth it!! 💯

Hi Emma! As someone who has had experience with the Turkish language, the way you were saying it the first time is actually perfect! Most of the vowels in Turkish are short, rather than long, so rather than "pam-ook", like the the "u' in "truth", it's kind of more like the "u" in the word "Turkish", or like the double "o" in "book". Hope that helps! P.S., your videos are so beautiful, they bring me solace when I'm not feeling great. Thank you so much!

Oh god I have waaay too many recs for this!😅 Here are my ultimate magical wintry book recs in three categories: *Middle Grade with wolves* -The Legend of Holly Claus by Brittney Ryan (This one's about Santa Claus' daughter and she has a wolf side kick!) -The Mysterious Howling by Maryrose Wood (It's about a young governess having to look after three wolf children) -The Wolf Wilder by Katherine Rundell (It's set in snowbound Russia and it's about a mother and a daughter who are 'wolf wilders' which is the opposite of a wolf tamer) *Romance* -Song of Salzburg by Jen Geigle Johnson (This one's actually the fourth book in a series but you don't have to read the other books in order to read this, they all work as stand alone novels. It's part of the Romance on the Orient Express series) -The Mistletoe Motive by Chloe Liese (An enemies-to-lovers romance set in a bookstore around Christmas time) *Fairy Tale Retellings* -The Raven and the Reindeer by T. Kingfisher (The Snow Queen retelling) -A Single Thread of Moonlight by Laura Wood (Cinderella retelling) -Wildwood Dancing by Juliet Marillier (This one's actually not quite wintry, it's much more of an autumnal book but it's a retelling of the 12 Dancing Princesses, it's set in Transylvania and it's such an awesome read!) 😇

Thank you for recommending one of my favourite books! About Year of the Hare from a Finnish person: we Finnish people are Uralic, not Germanic/Scandinavian. We have our own mythology which actually was a huge inspiration for Tolkien when he wrote Lord of the Rings. That’s why the man in the book did not worship Norse gods but the Finnish ones. Vatanen also crosses the border to Russia because he goes to the east from the north of Finland. Here’s a few more recommendations if you’re interested in reading some other Finnish books: - Under The North Star by Väinö Linna ( it’s a trilogy about a family that struggles during the Finnish civil war and the 2nd World War. This book is one of the most popular Finnish classics) - Moominpappa at Sea by Tove Jansson but I recommend reading any of the Moomin books (Moominpappa at Sea is a story about the main character’s father who goes through a mid life chrisis and takes his family to live at a lighthouse. It’s a story about self-discovery.) - Meet the Grump by Tuomas Kyrö (the main character really reminds me of Ove from A Man Called Ove but this book is a few years older.) - Kalevala (it’s the main book about Finnish mythology. If you’re into Lord of The Rings you need to read it. Gandalf was heavily inspired by Väinämöinen who is the main character in Kalevala)

I'm so happy that you put out this video today because that's *JUST* the type of books I'm in the mood for these days as well! I'm currently reading "Deathless" by Catherynne M. Valente - I'm honestly surprised that I'm learning about it just now because it is right up my alley - and I think you would like it too! It's a retelling of the Russian story about Koschei the Deathless, it's cold, it's moody, it's magical, it's wonderfully written and I want to rush through it but at the same time I don't want it to end, ever. I'm barely 150 pages in but I strongly suspect that it's going to be a new favourite and I'll be thinking about it for weeks.

Sounds like a great bunch of winter books! I will put a bunch of them on my list. I love winter, too, and work on the 2nd floor of a university, overlooking a green space with spruce trees. When it snows, I always squeal with delight. It's like being in a snowglobe. I love it. My coworkers think it's odd, but I don't care.

Emma, if I may add to your list of "Winter Cozy books" I'd like to put "Consolations of the Forest: Alone In A Cabin on the Siberian Taiga" on your radar! It's a beautiful written book about basically what's on the tin, and it has that simple, non industrial cottage core life balanced with the thrill and danger of well, the Siberian Taiga in the winter. Brilliant read.

I think a lot of lit students and people who claim to love literature tend to want to appear 'edgy'. And so they promote only dark, depressing, scary, or inaccessible literature to almost create an air of mystery and also superiority around themselves. I appreciate Emma's unapologetic embrace of cosy, kind, even childlike literature.

Emma, Idk who said it was wrong, but your pronounciation of Orhan Pamuk's name is absolutely correct, it would be even on point if you think of his surname like a name that rhyms with the word book, so an abrupt end. So the one winter book I really definitely want to read is Winter by Ali Smith. It's the second book in a four-part series that begins with Autumn, and the writing is supposedly really beautiful and the short stories all feature winter and are somewhat connected. I read the first few pages and I'm looking forward to reading this!

I also read A Tale for the Time Being by Ruth Ozeki recently and although I had mixed feelings, mostly frustration, it's a dearly beloved book by many and I thought it definitely had wintery vibes.

You have no idea how much I want to move to the northern hemisphere so I can have wintery Christmases. I live in Melbourne Australia and Christmas here is stinking hot and even in winter we never get snow.

Hi Emma! I am Turkish and you pronounced Orhan Pamuk perfectly the first time ! I can still hear an accent but it is the right way to pronounce his name ! So you didn’t say it wrong ^^ ❄️

I don't know if you've read it but The Guernsey Potato Peel Pie Society is an AMAZING book and feels so wintery and cosy to me. A book about books and with some WWII background.
