Yeah same =D The only part that sucked was the stress of putting the CPU in the socket. I couldn't sleep thinking about what would happen if I destroyed the MOBO and the CPU by messing up that step. Turned out to be easy though. So next time should be less stressful.

I personally think both 'array styles' used by AMD and Intel make sense for their products. In most cases an Intel CPU will cost much more than the motherboard so theoretically it's better for the pins to break on the motherboard rather than on the CPU

I found my first computer collecting dust in the basement about a year ago, and since I hadn't actually gotten into computers until nearly a decade after I stopped using that pc, I never knew what was inside. I opened it up and was greeted by a big cartridge with a tiny fan on it labeled "Pentium II". I hadn't even known at the time that cartridge cpu's ever existed.

Hey Linus. I was wondering how powered USB hubs work. Does it just help power the peripherals or can it hurt them by giving them to much voltage? I had an AVID interface for Pro Tools and when it came to supplying phantom power for two condenser mics, I was concerned. I got a powered USB hub (Amazon Basics) but, I was just wondering if devices only pull what they need or if they can be burnt up, so to say. Thanx man! Love the show!

I found one of my parents old pcs in there closet so I decided to clean it up as I had nothing to do and it was the weekend and I kinda got bored of most of my games so then when i was taking out components I realized I hadn't taken out the cpu yet so I looked around and found a cartridge with a 40 or 20 mm fan mounted on it and I thought ok well that must be an old cpu so I googled it and realized that cpus were also inserted like cartridges a while ago I was then confused as to how to remove it as it was bolted on the mobo with rivets and other stuff that is hard to remove.

Girls. They all have diferent size and shape sockets but compatibility will probably not be an issue. Make sure there is enough lubrication before insertion. This mostly comes preinstalled but you may need to apply some manually. it is very wise to cover your entire cpu with a special rubber cover before inserting into the socket. This may slow down performance and not provide optimum experience but it will provide maximum protection against viruses and malware and also save you from alot of trouble in the ocassion of uncontrolled coolant leaking. Please note that brand new motherboards will have sealant in their sockets. This is nothing to worry about as it will brake off as soon as you insert the cpu but be sure to do it gently for the first time.

When I first got my processor the delivery person just absolutely destroyed the box and in turn bent a handful of the pins on the cpu inside. Spent a good hour+ with the tiniest flathead I own to bend them back. That was fun. In the end though it fit perfectly into the socket and has worked beautifully ever since.

Not only do you need a cooler to match your socket, but pay attention to which way it will connect. I ordered the wrong cooler master 212, and it could only go with the fans pushing/pulling vertically, which made it too wide and would have blocked half my memory slots. had to switch to one that attached differently.

oh jeez this brought back some bad memories. A few years back I had a fairly nice little prebuilt pc and it was starting to show its age. I checked on the case and it proudly displayed "AMD athlon 2" on it so I did the "logical" thing and went ahead and purchased an AMD FX 8350. not smart. so I get home with this beastie in my hand and set about trying to pull my computer apart and after a lot of effort I finally got to the motberboard which, superficially at least, appeared to have the right sockets. This was back when I didn't know about sockets. "AMDs are easy to install" they said. about five minutes of wrangling later and I'd bent two pins. an hour of desperate wiggling with a knife later and those pins totally came off. I spent the next hour or so practically crying at my own failure. and that's the story of how I threw away about £180 on a processor and then killed it before I even got to run it.

You are 100% correct that you should not have to apply pressure to a CPU to seat it. If anything you should do the exact opposite and set it down carefully in the socket. The pins on a PGA socket will fall into place if the socket is correctly opened. Unless you bent any of the pins or didn't set the CPU down flat in the socket, it will require zero insertion force (it is why they are sometimes called ZIF sockets). One other reason it would not go in is that the CPU might not be oriented in the socket properly. Look for a mark or arrow on the socket and CPU and they should be matched to the same corner. Also note that a CPU will not go into the socket correctly if at all if it is not oriented correctly. If that happens, stop where you are, *FREEZE* and look to see if you did something wrong. Also install your PC parts when you have the whole day to yourself so you can enjoy the experience and do it correctly. Maybe that will give you plenty of time to check everything over once or twice. Then you can get a cup of coffee or something else and power it on for the first time and install the OS. I say do all of this on a free day so that you don't have to rush anything, building a PC should be fun. Rushing it will just lead to stress and possibly damaged parts. Need help, by all means call in a knowledgeable friend. He can help you out with anything you are not sure of. This isn't as difficult as some people would make it sound. Just take your time do it right and have fun!!

Things that were either incorrect or missing: -CPUs on cards were an experiment, and before them PGA sockets already existed. They were mostly useful in the days of the external L2 cache. -Back then, both manufacturers used the same sockets, but Intel in order to monopolize the x86 CPU market they made their own sockets exclusive, forcing AMD to use their own and several 3rd party manufacturers to leave the market.
