This week we take you to Navua to feature a business that has given aquaculture a whole new meaning.
They're farming crabs in huge ponds and mangroves pans!
That's right - and the Crab Company Fiji will argue that it's quite possible!
Join us over the next half hour as we show you just what a little ingenuity , innovation and hard work can achieve.

Would you believe I grew up in Navua...and in the late 80s worked for fishermen in the coastal seas around the same area to put myself through high school...the place brings back a lot of innocent memories...who would have thought that the humble art of crabbing would one day be technologically controlled......thank you Talk Business and Rachna Nath for the program...makes one proud of the once humble rural town that one grew up in.

+Raj Chandra That's really inspiring and cool. I grew up in a small town mid-western United States of America. This area has the same agricultural feel. I'm glad there's a crop that they can efficiently support!

This sort of project will take the community to be behind you. I would imagine there would be so many factors that have to come together seamlessly for success. Happy farming. Great work, low environmental impact.

The Mud crab commercialization is is a very good idea in increasing crab production in lieu of nature way of raising and growing crabs. The crab industry are growing and it's products are high in demand all over the world.

Another industry that can be streamed from crab production is making nets by hand. It is a skill that can be done by people in their leisure hours as it is mainly a matter of knotting rope similar to one knitting, crocheting, or macrameing fibre. This would give families added income and reduce the need for purchasing nets from outside the island.

it does look like a dungeoness crab and I like those. they are similar to the blue crab but a little fatter built. I love our local blues. especially the large blue males.

Nice project,I really like how they plan to involve the community with the mangrove pens.I can see this bringing quite a few jobs to the area in the near future if not already.But as far as markets go,its there.The biggest issue with crab meat is the cost.If you can lower the price some the demand ALWAYS rises.But I really doubt they'll have to go there since it looks like they have a top notch product that will create it's own market with ease.

I have a few questions: 1. Are these crabs raised in Fresh water or is that Salt water? 2. What is the life span of a crab? Can they live for years? 3. Do you ever get bad storms that damage the nets around the mangroves?

I've been involved with aquaculture for years myself and have had similar thoughts.Now I know this is a older post but there was a guy here in South NJ who was raising blue claws for a while.It never fully took off for a few different reasons but nonetheless it was a neat project and he even had "crabbing ponds" where you could bring your kids and catch them.

Very good video. However, just want to know, how you are handling the waste from the ponds? If you are dumping into the river, than god save the river. As mangroves are very sensitive eco-system, what measures have you taken to protect them & the native fish in the long run?
@naushadnotykhan2002
@naushadnotykhan2002 6 жыл бұрын
Dibyendu Mukharjee -As far as I know there is nothing to dump in the river coz crabs do live in mud so there is nothing we dumping we r not removing mud from the bottom coz it is grown in swampy area

We need to do this for Hermit crabs for the Pet Industry it would save thousands of wild Hermits from dying from stress being pulled out of wild! I think a hermit crab raised around humans all it's life and the abolishment a of Painted shells and wild crab taking would benefit the species I have pet Hermit crabs and it Kills me that they do long for the Wild and I try my best to make it like home and make sure they get lots of different foods to eat they are spoiled Hermits

The mangroves are a very important part of the ecosystem. If you fence mangroves all the fishing will be affected as the place fish lay egg and baby fish hide goes off. Stick to your expensive ponds, they are cheaper.
