Crabbing Newport Pier! | Dungeness Crab Catch & Cook (Rich & Creamy Mac and Cheese)! | Oregon Coast

We got away to the Oregon Coast for some Dungeness crabbing at Newport Pier in Newport, Oregon. We had such a fun day, filled with memories and great fortune. We secured our catch and came home to cook a very decadent Dungeness crab mac and cheese. It was seriously so delicious, and we had a blast making a meal together after such a long day.

This cracks me up!! I live down in Coquille, and like 5 years ago a guy that has a fishing utube channel asked me out on a date, crabbing in newport. We drove all the way up there to same dock u on and it was packed that day. Dude I was with baited our pot and threw it in ocean without tying it to dock. I was on the dock trying to step on rope and it was gone. Lol

It really is. The big pots in heavy current at the end of the dock can be challenging at times, especially when they are full of crab. Kailey came in clutch saving dinner from a disastrous spill🙏

Thanks for sharing. Good video. Up here in Vancouver, BC we are allowed only 2 traps. How many traps are you allowed in Oregon? Last week I limited out on red rock crab (4 is the limit of any combination of red rock and dungees). Me and my buddy caught 7 red rock and a 7" dungee. This is the best time to crab. Less pressure, the crabs seem healthier and the commercial crabbers start here in May. Cheers!

Wow! Thanks for sharing and that's some good work! We're allowed 3 traps in Oregon. Limit is 12 Male Dungeness that measures at least 5 3/4 inch. The limit for Red Rock is 24 and they can be any size and sex. Crabbing definitely slows a bit this time of year as commercial crabbers are in full force and we've been dealing with lots of rain/snow melt and high rivers, leading to too much fresh water in the bays. Crabbing really picks up after a stretch of dry weather and the bay clears up and the higher salinity returns. Cheers to you!

How much line/rope do you need for crabbing off the pier there in Newport?

If you are going to use heavy pots and try to go off the very end of the pier you are going to want about 100 ft of rope to account for the strong current. You can get away with about 50 feet on most parts of the dock but the last section of the dock you pretty much need 75 or more IMO.

have you gone crabbing in the off season? my dad is visiting me up here in May and he really wants to go crabbing. wondering if it's even worth it? thanks!

Yes, we've done lots of off-season crabbing. It's definitely worth it. We've had great days in April in the past and into the early Summer. Boat will always be the best option to find them during the "off" months. Good luck out there!
