Very happy SAD digs this! Hope everyone else does too. Crack The Sky came out of West Virginia in the mid 70's. Their debut album was voted #1 debut of 1975. For some reason they are very popular only in certain pockets of the east coast. They're big in Pittsburgh but here in the Baltimore area they are an institution. They have many albums and this is off their third release Safety In Numbers from 1978. I have seen them live more times than I can account for and they are still performing live. I guess there are reasons why they never hit the big time but please check out their catalog if you like this. Glad I got to make a real obscure pick!

Nice pick Uncle Chazblitz! I've definitely heard of this band and I'm pretty sure I've seen them live but can't recall where. Do you know if they ever played in the DC area? I used to go up to B'more pretty regularly back in that era. Did they ever play at Hammerjacks or the Power Plant or the Civic Center? I know I've seen 'em somewhere!

@@shoutinchuck3363 They played everywhere Chuck. And they played Hammerjacks alot. They had several 3 day sold out shows there back in the 80's that I attended. They still play Rams Head in Annapolis and The Reacord in Towson.

@@chazblitz Well then I might've seen them at Hammerjacks. Which explains why I can't remember where I saw them. Ahem, if you catch my drift. Anyway, this is why I dig this channel. I hear stuff from back in the day that I missed at the time. There was so much great music coming out back then that it was hard to keep up with all of it. Especially the regional bands. Thanks again for this one Chazblitz!

@@shoutinchuck3363 The Anthem down at the Wharf in DC is a great new venue. And after seeing King Crimson a couple years ago at The Warner Theater I'm a huge fan of that place. I ponyed up for the VIP balcony seats and it was fantastic.

That was a nice surprise! I had their debut album back when I was a sophomore in high school. I believe that was 75. They were a band from the tri-state area around Pittsburgh. I believe I got turned on to them after I read a review of the album in the pages of the original Creem magazine. Hold On and Surf City were stand out tunes, but the whole album was great!

This was the first song I heard by CTS back in 81 the first week of college, and have been a fan ever since. My best friend from college came back from summer break with this album, and turned me onto the band. He & his wife made the trip from the midwest to Philly to see them for the first time last year, and got to meet guitarist Rick Witkowski. Were going to see them once I retire from work next year, and hopefully I'll get to meet all the original members still in the band.

Live Sky is incredible but it was modified for cd by adding songs to make it a double album. It’s now known as Alive And Kickin’ Ass! Maybe the greatest live Rock album ever. They changed lead singers here we have Gary Lee Chappel and John Palumbo is writing songs but not singing them.

I had been into this band for a few years before I went to work for a radio guy named McGraw and when I mentioned Crack the Sky........he said, "Oh, I know they wrote a song about me one time because the lead singer did weekends at the radio station but I've never heard the song."--- Apparently the lead singer didn't like him too much! HA!

Not offending to the ear but find nothing at all that stands out. Easy for me to see why they weren't big. Watered down AC/DC riff with slightly effeminate vocals, popular with many U.S. bands at this time. The very short guitar break was cool. If it came on the radio, back in the day when I listened to radio, I wouldn't turn it off. This for me is typical "safe" A.O.R.. Not a criticism as many like this sound. Beats Chicago Chaz 🙂

Well Paul, at least you didn't hate it. My goal with picking tunes here for SAD to react to is to pick obscure stuff that most people haven't heard that I think is cool. Not mainstream or that robotic shit we got last weekend. Hope you like my next pick better but as always, love your honest opinions. This also was the only album to feature this vocalist so maybe if you try their debut, Animal Notes the follow up and the 4th from 1980 called White Music. All those feature original founder singer John Palumbo who remains to this day. And yes, lol, we do have some effeminate singing motherfuckers over on this side of the pond!
