I’m so happy you played this marathon. The “Beatles of Baltimore” as their called around my neck of the woods. Been listening to this band for over 40 years. Rolling Stone listed the CTS debut album as #47 on their 50 Greatest Prog Albums of all time. They toured with Rush too. They said that out of all the top bands they toured with, Rush was the nicest and most helpful to them during their career. Keep exploring NicknLex their awesome !!!

They were so popular in Baltimore it was really rather unbelievable. They were signed to a small record label and didn't get the proper backing to become as big as they might have been. Such is the music biz. But this is good music for sure.

Outstanding that you are doing a Crack the Sky marathon.. I've seen them twice, great in concert.. Rolling Stone rated their 1st LP as Best Debut album of 1975.. very unique sound combining jazz, Funk, Rock and Prog into their own blend.. Lead singer and guitarist John Palumbo states their influences as The Beatles and King Crimson..

Nick been a fan since 1975 but didn’t buy any until their 1978 live album Live Sky. It took forever to get it out on cd and now it’s called Alive and Kickin’ Ass. From that album Ice is 12 minutes long and the opening songs Hold On/Surf City are absolutely mind blowing. They close the show with The Beatles I Am The Walrus. They also have a dvd from 2008 All Access.

Been one of older brother and myself's favorite bands since the late 70's...LOVE these dudes! Saw em back in the day a couple times. I wasn't able to make the trip to Baltimore a few years back for what, according to the band, was gonna be one of their last performances. But, my brother did. Crack the Sky opened for Rush on tour, probably 1976 or '77, and Rush loved them.. Geddy said they were looking out for them on tour, because they were just getting started. Their first 4 or 5 albums are excellent, then they sort of disbanded, due to issues with their record company, who went bankrupt.. They reformed 8 or 10 years later and have independently producing their own records since then.. Other great songs are "We Want Mine", " Lighten Up McGraw", "From the Greenhouse", "Hold On", "Maybe I Can Fool Everybody ", and "Animal Skins"..

Hi Nick, Not heard of this band. They passed me by in the 70's. Don't know if it's the difference with England & America Prog as I have noticed groups sometimes don't become as well known between the two. It's more famous in one or the other unless international world fame. Then again, there was so many new artists emerging during the 70's it was impossible to catch them all. Great marathon. I enjoyed it. Thankyou. Jim X

Saw Crack the Sky numerous times from '76-'80. Dynamic and quite fun in concert with lots of extended jams. Their live album (initially called "Live Sky" and then re-released with twice as much material with new title of "Live and Kicking Ass") is terrific. All the players are tops, especially Joe Macre on bass.

The version of Nuclear Apathy is from the "Live Sky" album (you cah hear the audience in spots). The guitar work is parallel playing by Rick Witkowski and Jim Griffiths, while playing top-beat over Joey's drum fills. The first time I heard this it blew my mind and I still enjoy hearing CTS to this day. They were 20 years ahead of their time.

Nuclear Apathy was the 1st song I heard from them maybe, over 7-8 years ago. Always "heard of" them but not sat down to listen, but remember seeing their cover art when I was younger. Somewhere I heard NA, and then found it and loved the vocalist of that album (Gary Lee Chappell) and the style of Prog it was, love the riffs, changes and yes! the dissonance! I need to get to know them a bit more. You have a great ear Nick, you were almost perfect with the opening of "Sleep" (and the Classical piece that I forget who and what piece it was :p) and the Heep :)! Sadly . . . I heard a few tracks of their latest music months ago . . . and it was surprisingly awful (for me), and the lyrics were so damn pedestrian. I couldn't believe it was the same band (maybe it was more focus on the "message" and less on creativity in the music). - Making people happy with the more obscure bands from the late 70's Nick! :D

I had one cassette tape in the 80s of Crack The Sky, and I played it a lot til it jammed in car stereo, and I never got back to them or heard any back catalog. Now I try not to be so obsessed with bands as I used to be -- listening to everything they have, looking for bootlegs and collaborations with other artists, etc. But this marathon has reawakened that urge to know all about them -- I must resist! My Harddrive is filling up and we're talking a hundred Gigs here man! Thank god we can sample albums online for free so as to get only the stuff that we really really want, even though it takes some digging sometimes. Crack The Sky was not a rock radio band, I think they did mostly supporting tours with more mainstream bands and festivals for most of their career. It is also hard when you change directions, change genres, offer off-beat things. The Beatles had big success early, so they were 'comfortable' changing styles and putting out deeper cuts and even getting 'political' and throwing classical, funk, and eastern musical styles at fans. Not all bands could afford to venture out like that -- Crack The Sky seems to do it all the time and damn the industry's restrictions on style, song length, arrangements, and heavier themes. These "marathons" are great.

Crack the Sky are fantastic...I think I may have suggested them in your comments a while back. Nuclear Apathy is epic off their Safety in Numbers album, which doesn't have a bad song on it. The bassist Joe Macre was playing a Rickenbacker on the first 4 or 5 albums... he's probably in my top 5 favorite bassists, great technique, great tone. The rhythm section with he and the drummer Joey D'Amico is shit tight, super complex breaks and play together like a hand in a glove. I would recommend the first 5 albums...after that it was just the vocalist and songwriter John Palumbo and a bunch of hired hands....Crack the Sky, Animal Notes, Safety in Numbers, Live Sky, and (White Music which is less proggy) are all must listens.

Crack The Sky has been a fav of mine since 1978 when they released Safety In Numbers, which is still my favorite album by them. You should also listen to the title track. Unfortunately it was the only album they made that sounds like that, or had that same lead singer. You should also listen to Live Sky which features this lineup and has extended versions of Ice and other cuts. They also do a cover of The Beatles "I am the Walrus" on that album that to me, is better than The Beatles version! Their first four albums were great, then after that they are mixed bag, but they are all good, just not as proggy as Safety In Numbers.

@@NicknLex Thank you so much! I love you guys, I really do! You are both some of the kindest, nicest, most genuine people I've ever seen. And I can say that without having actually met you. It's the way guys come across. The music is great, but the two of you are incredibly likeable and I love watching you guys. I was a teenager in the 70's, and all of the music you are now listening to I fell in love with 45 years ago or so sitting with my best friend in his upstairs bedroom. (By the way, he now "plays" George Harrison in not just one, but two Beatles tribute bands in DC / Northern Virginia Area). Anyway, thanks guys for everything!!!

Faked a driver's license and saw them in ocean city MD in 75 or 76. Back Of The Rack I think was the bar's name. Great moment in my life.

Love, love, love Crack the Sky. As cover/Top 40 band in late 70s, we covered She's A Dancer, I Don't Have A Tie, and Mind Baby. Still say nothing compares to their first two albums, CTS and Animal Notes (gotta love Rangers at Midnight) but Safety In Numbers is proggy great and would say the album Ghost (2001) is as classic as those. Coconuts ... Zoom ... So much good music over all these years. Just released an acoustic album. Too bad more don't know about them. My music is most influenced by them.
