At LTX 2023, I stumbled across NexiGo and the Aurora Pro 4K Short Throw Tri-Color Laser Projector... an impressive combination to say the least, especially when you consider their asking price of $1699. But is this an instant-buy for those looking for a home theater projector, or are there better options out there?
But first... What am I drinking???
Athletic Brewing has been making quite the name for themselves with Non-Alcoholic craft brews, and their Irish Red is no exception. Seriously, this one is going to confuse at least a couple Irishmen at the pub.

I had that same Casio and used it as my primary display for probably 8 years before it had a problem. Unfortunately I didn't put much effort into figuring out what was wrong and "upgraded" to a halogen based 4k projector.... A projector that has had nearly constant issues since about 6 months after I bought it. Wish I still had the Casio.

Just got this off a reviewer program I'm on for free, luckily I get to keep and don't have to return. Image is fantastic but the native apps are horrific. I can't even log into half of them and they're all 1080p. HDMI wise with it being 2.1 I've found it brilliant apart from eArc. The volume is seriously reduced. I've also found it produces a strange hiss on the main screen, for some reason my phone shows as connected when this was never set up. Just bought a Vividstorm Pro 100" which will take a few weeks to arrive but finding the image overall brilliant.

Athletic Brewing's All Out stout is another really good one. Amazing that they can get all of the flavor of a good, dark stout, other than the alcohol burn, into a non-alcoholic beer.

I mean JMGO has done a kickstarter as well, selling their units at a massive discounts with their N1 Ultras. Their full retail prices did NOT go down from what was listed afterwards however so the early birds did get a bargain. Don't know about Nexigo however, as JMGO's product was pretty unique in its category with the gimbal design.

Does this actually have a 2160p panel? The reason I ask is that most -- if not every -- other consumer "4K" DLP projector currently on the market actually use 1080p panels + some sort of panel shifting technology. AFAIK, the only "consumer" projectors with true 4K panels are the JVC and Sony LCOS/D-ILA units, but those go for _at least_ $7K. If this machine has a true 4K panel in it, then wow! Bloody wow!
@CraftComputing
@CraftComputing 9 ай бұрын
Yes, this is true 4K, though they do try to advertise 120Hz input with only 60Hz refresh rate on the output.

I see that no matter the price, the trick is always the same… I have a 70 euro one running Android that does “4K and HDR”. In practice it’s 1080p (probably) on a monstrously underpowered chip boasting a whole gigabyte of storage. A Fire TV stick and it’s a perfectly serviceable cheap option lol
@justinbeamon6624
@justinbeamon6624 9 ай бұрын
This is NOT true 4k. No single chip DLP projector is. This is 4x pixel shifting to achieve 4k. Also it only accepts 4k/120 signals but outputs 4k/60hz
@TheHookUp
@TheHookUp 9 ай бұрын
Like basically every 4K UST on the market right now the Aurora Pro uses a 0.47" DMD from Texas Instruments that has 1920x1080 micro mirrors. It uses 4x pixel shifting to achieve 4K resolution. In practice there is no difference in resolution between a native 4k imager and a pixel shifted one, but it is easier to achieve higher contrast ratios with larger chips.

This does look interesting. I am just weary of a non brand name trying to include everything. Either support for apps will drop off. Speaker replacement issues. 3d incompatibility with newer standards. Like you said, if that’s the price and it were not a kickstarter, damn.

@gustersongusterson4120
@gustersongusterson4120 9 ай бұрын
Good explanation of projection technology. One thing about lasers that people often overlook is that their contrast ratio is much higher than traditional lamp projectors. This makes a drastic improvement in image quality especially in dark scenes. It's kinda the OLED of projection tech, though it's not nearly as high in contrast obviously.

I don't like ultra short throw lasers. I tried a 2k LG once that literaly was a quart of a size of this bohemoth. They emphasize every little crease in your cloth or wall rendering them literally unusable unless you have a perfecet screen for it. I bougt a ultra short throw Acer DLP. That has ok image and covers up creases.
@rydmike
@rydmike 9 ай бұрын
The lack of motorised zoom and position image position shift is also a show stopper on current ultra short throw projectors for me, as it means I cannot zoom out to fill my 21:9 screen for a more immersive movie experience.
@CraftComputing
@CraftComputing 9 ай бұрын
This has 8-way keystone correction, and it was trivial to get the screen squared up.
@rydmike
@rydmike 9 ай бұрын
@@CraftComputing Yes digital keystone correction the ultra short throw projectors tend to have, and they do a good job with it too. Sadly as soon as you use digital keystone correction you are loosing pixel fidelity, but since usually people project video and not computer screens with text, that is usually fine. What I miss on all UST models I have seen so far is optical motorized zoom and image shift, with memories, so you can swap between 16:9 format and zoom out to fill a 21:9 cinemascope screen for movies. For that, long throw projectors still seems to be the only game in town.

I hate to be that guy, but the "Smart Features" are actually a big turn-off. I don't want my display devices attaching themselves to the network. Servers go down, services get hacked and leak user data, embedded processors have hardware vulnerabilities and forgotten back doors once used for software development or chip fault debugging, I'd rather just carry a NUC equivalent since you can find those hilariously cheap these days and they're reliably vulnerability checked (and recycling is always good for the environment).

@@matpearson9711 Lower Decks is a love letter to 90s-era Trek. Watch and enjoy. My headcanon is that Lower Decks is a cartoon inside the Star Trek universe, one that a crewman might load up to chill with after a shift. There is, curiously, a crossover with Strange New Worlds. Kind of messes with the headcanon, but it's still a whole lot of fun.
