How much difference does a projector screen make? Is there a big difference between a $400 screen and a $1300 screen? I tested 8 ultra short throw projector screens to see which one had the best brightness, contrast, black levels, clarity, and ambient light rejection.

Thank you for the comparison video! Due to my own room constraints, I'll be opting for a floor rising screen and your comparison was perfect for me to have confidence doing so! I will add, the cost comparison between the Nothing Projector and the Vivid Screen may not hold up depending on your location. Nothing Projector is offering FREE SHIPPING worldwide regardless of screen size, whereas Vivid Screen is charging an additional $380 for shipping a 120" to the US pacific NW.. This leads to the Vivid being $280 more expensive for an essentially comparable screen!!!

You are in the lead when it comes to making these type of video comparisons. If I was in the hunt for one of these screens, it would have been an easy decision thanks to your help. I am in a different situation, I already made the investment and bought an Akia white standard 125 inch stationary projector screen. Would be super duper awesome if you would make a video on ALR UST fabric options I can replace/upgrade my projector screen material with.
@TheHookUp
@TheHookUp Жыл бұрын
The screen material is 90% of the cost, you won't save any significant amount of money by reusing the frame, especially since 125" is a pretty non-standard frame size. White screens are still good for ambient light controlled environments, maybe the solution is upgraded blackout curtains or blinds?
@TheHookUp
@TheHookUp Жыл бұрын
Oh, you mean just high contrast grey? I was talking ALR/CLR which are much more fragile. Yes, there are tons of options for screen fabric, the cheapest place to get custom sizes is carls place.

Great work and finally someone that review CLR and ALR screens for laser ust projectors, much appreciated! But i missing 3 brands... The MirraViz, Screen Innovations (SI) and BORDER REEN-X screens. It would be great if you would test this in the near future.
@TheHookUp
@TheHookUp Жыл бұрын
MirraViz doesn't have a tensioned version yet and their previous version suffers is not an option for most people because the seams between the individual panels are clearly visible, and because the adhesive transfers imperfections from the wall onto the screen. When they release their tensioned version I'll be sure to review it. I did reach out to Screen Innovations, but they did not respond. I've never heard of BORDER REEN-X, looks like an indiegogo screen?
@TheHookUp
@TheHookUp Жыл бұрын
Just looked a little more into the BORDER screen, even their own marketing material looks bad. Check out this video where they compare it to a non-tensioned ALR screen. The ALR contrast and black levels are WAY better than their own screen: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/f9aIbKp9m77eeIU.html

I've been going down the rabbit hole researching everything UST projectors for a while...never owned a projector before and want to make sure I'm confident before pulling the trigger on such a big investment. Just found this channel and this seems like the best resource out there for in-depth knowledge on everything projection. One thing I'm wondering...I've seen some Pet Crystal ALR screens out there for a bit cheaper than the Fresnel screens, and I've seen some say that it's even better for deeper black levels than Fresnel. For context, it would be in my basement where there is some ambient light-- walls are already a dark color, ceiling is white but I'd be willing to paint it and get some blackout curtains for the windows. I'd love some of your wisdom on the pros/cons of Pet Crystal vs. Fresnel, specifically the Formovie and Spectra ones. Thanks again for being such a great resource!

I'm in same case as you. I'm trying to decide if XYscreen pet cristal or formovie fresnel. The Xiaomo fabulus F1 had lots of reflections on near walls, but the formovie fresnel is nearly same as fabulous F2. It is supposed that F2 or formovie fresnel will have less reflections.

Thanks Rob. Really like your scientific approach to testing. Testing lower priced equipment as you do also helps ordinary people get a lot more value for money. 👍🏻 Constructive criticism: Perhaps the relevant on-paper test results could be shown below the side-by-side comparison so the video could be a bit shorter. And the discrepancy between official specs and measured specs is maybe more of a general point to make, since for the purposes of a comparison, only your measurements count (for consistency). Anyway, keep up the good work!

Hey, great video, very informative! I've just snagged the Formovie Fresnel screen you've featured, but realized it has a 50-degree view angle (whoops, my mistake). Wondering if I should reconsider. Here are my specifications: - Room size: 28m² (4.8m x 6m) - Viewer-screen distance (from the main key viewing area which is a sofa directly perpendicular on the center of the screen): 4.5m - Room width from screen center: 4m right, 2m left - Another key viewing area: Dining space, 3m right from screen's center - Ambient light: Glass door and window to the screen's right and overhead ceiling light. Given my setup, including a Philips Screeneo U5 UST projector with 2000 ANSI Lumens, would this screen suit my needs, or should I consider buying another screen? What are your thoughts? In the case I should change the screen - what are your suggestions in the same price range (fixed frame is fine)? Thanks in advance for the help!

Awesome research and great video. This is the video I've so desperately needed to see. Thanks for the master class! I'll be watching this video a few more times. Your timing is impeccable (for me) - I'm an Indiegogo early adopter, impatiently awaiting my Philips Screeneo U5 (expected late March 2023). Philips recommends a fresnel (is the "s" silent?) projector screen. Do all UST projectors have essentially the same tech to shoot their lasers? Crazy that these "special" (ALR / CLR) screens cost almost as all the tech in a UST projector. Can a screen be ALR & CLR, or is that marketing mumbo jumbo? I've never done patreon or paid for a "Thanks" - do you get 100% of the cut, or does Patreon / KZfaq get a cut too? I'm definitely paying you for this one, sir!

Really the best video or even best report I have seen on this topic. I would be interested in the partially less good but larger versions around 150 inches. Pro Screen with the T-Prism screens, XY and Spectra offer that. With Spectra, I don't think there are any major drawbacks, but I would be interested in the price performance of a Pro-Screen in relation. I've had comparison samples come in from Vividstorm, Pro Screen, and Hivilux, but at that size, it was impossible to judge. It was interesting that the samples from the same manufacturer sometimes differed significantly. In general, I think that only really large screens can create a cinema experience. But your video is great, I would not have thought that the Fesnel screens are any good or "Nothing" can really deliver own, good quality. Have many thanks for the great effort, which one can really perceive immediately!

Outstanding video review! I have a question regarding the ALR screen texture that can produce an artifact/noise appearance , almost like a grainy picture when panning or solid colors. Which of these screens did best? Did the screen material of the Spectra appear to be higher quality or just the build material of the screen itself? I have the AWOL cinema screen and it is a good screen but I notice the texture often , maybe I sit too close. Thanks so much appreciate all the efforts!!

Fantastic comparison. The only of this kind I think. You compared the combination of things I have and am considering. I currently have a vividstorm 120" rising screen paired with the formovie theater and enjoying it. Though I've considered getting a Spectra Vantage 150" screen for my living room then move the 120" to my bedroom. I was considering maybe getting an AWOL 3500 for my living room and moving the formovie theater to my bedroom since the extra brightness might help increase the viewing with ambient light. Since it seems you already have the footage could you post a video comparing the Formovie and AWOL side by side in your bright and dark room setups using both the Spectra Vantage and the Vividstorm (your two top picks as it happens)... to use them as a baseline to compare the formovie and awol would be really interesting and extremely helpful.

Hi! your video is amazing, a very comprehensive guide that will help many people, thanks!!! I have a question: do you know if there are CLR/ALR screens for "standar" projectors? I am referring to the typical projector that hangs on the ceiling above (or behind) the sofa where you sit to watch a movie. Thanks!
@TheHookUp
@TheHookUp 4 ай бұрын
Yes, but because the angle of projection is not as extreme as a UST they don't reject as much light as a UST specific ALR screen.

I enjoyed the video immensely, thank you for making it. We are building a house and have a movie theater inside and I am not too familiar with projectors and screens. I have purchased a Samsung SP-LSP9TFAXZA UST projector and would like a recommendation for a 130 inch screen. There is light in this area from windows at the back of the theater (40 feet away) and I would like to watch sports and movies also. Thank you as I am having a hard time finding any recommendations for a screen that large. Timm Goodmanson

Oh wow - I bought the 120" Spectra Vantage CLR/ALR screen from them back in October/November (actually after seeing one of your videos on the Formovie). The instructions were absolute abysmal, taking two hours to put together and had me panicking about a lost part. My Formovie' s performance has been really subpar and now I'm curious if this is the reason. Will be reaching out!

Loved this, but... In light of your comment that you really think that FRESNEL screens are the future, any chance at all that you could do a new video with more of these than just the Foremovie one? Or better yet, doing a comparison with ONLY FRESNEL (maybe against your best ALR screen as per this current video)? And jacking this up to 120" selections sure would be nice too... Great job on this video, and many thanks!

Hey Rob! If you remember, I asked you about the Hisense F100w 100"ALR fresnal hard screen and you said it was a nice screen. Well, I have had it for 2 weeks and not disappointed in the slightlest. 50lbs of solid light rejecting image!

@@TheHookUp Yeh, 56lbs to be precise. It is a physical sheet and not a kit of stretched material. It is very well built with adjusters that have a pole for each that hand low to get it just right. 2 lights on the room to either side of the couch and well lit. This screen has zero issues with ambient light. It showed up on an 8 foot long skid, fully assembled in a huge box. Here is a link to show the actual screen install: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/rrZ3o8t93pu9m58.html

@@kriswingert1662 I tried to get a hisense screen for this video but they were pretty adamant that they did not want their laserTV line being tested with non-hisense screens and they didn't want other USTs being used with hisense screens.

Thank you very much for your level of diligence! (I'm thinking Spectra smelt bigger margins). Only other base line that would be interesting is projector paints and how they compare (based on those of us who don't care about polluting light sources as we don't have any)

Great review☺️ i got the new wemax fresnel delivered but i got the feeling that its not fresnel. The frame looks excatly like yours and it should look a little bit different with the new version. Thats why i like to know what kind of microscope you are using, because i want to check the structure. Also fould you tell me the name to of the sensor measuring gain?

Glad you mentioned flipping the fresnel screen to do ceiling mount, but I was curious if you could do the same with the others. Knowing that they wouldn't work well at rejecting ceiling lights, but would they still be acceptable for rejecting window light? My application would be reasonable to leave the ceiling light off, but not having to pull the curtains over the window would be advantageous, or leaving some floor lamps on in the corners
