Once described by Izaak Walton as "The Contemplative Man's Recreation", fly fishing is steeped in history. With its North American roots planted firmly in the back woods of Maine, New England, and the Catskill Mountains of New York, and intertwined with early American archetypes like Henry David Thoreau, Theodore Gordon, and Hiram Leonard, traditional fly fishing and cane rod building represent a time when communion with nature was considered an elixir for the maladies of early industrialization. It is this philosophy of connectedness to the natural world that forms the cornerstone of building bamboo fly rods today.
Crafting Cane is a short documentary profiling local fly rod builder Don Andersen as he transforms raw bamboo into split cane fly rods. Using a measured mix of modern know-how and traditional techniques, Don creates fly rods that are not only fully functional works of art, but also an expression of the underlying philosophy behind the craft.

A couple years back my wife and I had a casual restaurant dinner with Don and his wife. I likely learned more in those three hours than I ever would have figuring it out on my own by (as author John Gierach said it) "standing in a river waving a stick" for years. Thanks Mr. Anderson.

Dear Don, I am 62 and I just split my first pice of cane today. I have been making my 2nd cane rod but with a difference...I dried a cane from my neighbours garden(a Chieses bamboo ) it isn't straight ! by any means. Its a raw bamboo whih hitched back and forth every 6-8 inches so in fact is like a Hucklberry Finn rod I guess. Lats year I wipped a half dosent rings onto it which I made myself from wire, made a handle of a budgle of 2 foot cane split pices and added a centre pin which my grandfather passed down to me. I was delighted to catch numerous fish with the 8 foot rod . Its very thin yet I caught several 5-6lb river fish on it and a few eels with just 4lb mono nylon . Its flexibility and soft action amazed me so now I am building the Mark 2 version. Mk2 is the same as Mke but this time 10feet and I split a piece of cane and tapered it to a point. My plan is to whip it to the rod at every knuckle growth right to the tip- just to give it a little more strength. Right now we have LOTS of rain in the Uk so my project is taking some time but its fun. I belong to a fishing club and everyone uses carbon or fibre glass rods except me. Having watched your videao I don't have the bench nor the jigs to get the perfect triangular sections but I will try to copy your idea and bundle some split pieces together with a resin and add bindings every 6-8 inches. If I can create an 8-10 foot rod this way I shall be very pleased. I am worm fishing not fly but using natural materials is so satisfying. The soft strike action and playing the fish is very nice. Thanks for entertaining us with your video.

Bamboo has power fibers on the outside (very strong) of the culm. The inside (pith) is very week. When you build a hex rod, by using 6 strips of bamboo, the rod is made almost entirely of power fibers. In this "cross section" picture you can see the dark parts'. The inside lighter material is the weaker material. carlinbamboo.com/images/essays/construction/xsection_lg.jpg

I've been building rods for 39 years and intend to keep doing it till I cannot. I work generally in the winter and fish all summer. That is what not retiring is all about. Doing things you enjoy and pleases you and others. Creation of flies or tackle I;ve been doing for near 65 years and don't intend to quit.
