Great video, I perform a similar annual service to my lawn tractors. I find adding a shot glass of marvel mystery oil or seafoam in the gas tank and topping of with fresh gas seems to do wonders for the fuel system. Also doesn’t hurt adding a couple of ounces in the crank case.

@@hester781Hello. Ok. I did much of what you did and then some. I also worked on the deck, replaced blades and both belts. Put the mower back together and she started right up. Sounds and feels great. Only now when I engage the blades there is a sound almost like metal on metal sound. The blades are not hitting or rubbing. Maybe cause the blades haven't been changed out in years? Took it through some grass to listen to and see what she would do. Ran great until I hit tall grass then she bogged down. Do you have a video addressing this with the Craftsman lt1000?
@hester781
@hester781 9 ай бұрын
@@lorinabroda3317hmm, so a few questions just to clarify. Was it making this noise before you replaced the belts/blades? Also not are you certain the blades are mounted correctly and not upside down? (It’s a very easy mistake to make). If it wasn’t making a noise before hand, and you have the blades mounted properly, I would suspect either the belt is routed incorrectly or a pulley could be failing. I would shut the mower off, raise the deck, all the way up, disengage the blade belt and see if you can replicate the noise by spinning each blade by hand. Let me know if this helps

Thanks for a great video! Wondering if you address lubrication of the blade shaft, etc? Also any other critical maint. areas on these Craftsman mowers?
@hester781
@hester781 Жыл бұрын
Thank you! So there is not much maintenance. You can do on the decks/spindles of these mowers. Some mowers have grease fittings on the blade spindles however, they use sealed bearings which defeats the purpose of greasing because the grease will not enter the bearings. Best advice I can give to anyone is to keep the deck clean of grass and debris both on top and underneath to keep the deck from rusting out. 👍🏻👍🏻

Hoping you can help me here. Bought a craftsman mower off friend. Ran fine but rough. Brought home, removed the mower deck to install the snow plow attachment. When I removed the deck I thought it easier to remove the blade engagement cable from under the hood where it connects to the engagement arm. The thinking was that it seemed easier that removing the cable and spring where it attaches to the mower deck. Long story short, did full tune-up (oil, spark plug, air filter, replaced fuse - though the old one had no break, etc.) Problem: sit on seat, engage parking brake, turn key.... no click, no sound at all. Brand new battery tested with multi-meter. Haven't tried installing the mower deck back in and installing the engagement cable but going from working to nothing is disturbing. Is the clutch/blade engagement cable have some safety sensor or something that tells the engine not to start if that is not installed. Basically the blade engagement arm is free-floating. I want to reinstall the mower deck and cable to test but just haven't had time to do it yet. Thought your experience might be able to provide me some insight. Thank you!😊
@hester781
@hester781 4 ай бұрын
Hello! So underneath that deck engagement leaver, there is a safety switch that needs to be depressed in order for the Mower to start. It sounds like that may be exactly what your problem is. If you depress that switch, everything should go back to normal.

I certainly could have welded the front spindle better than Craftsman makes the spindle. Just saying stronger is better. But ya'll would only be doing the left front. So when ya'll fix one side strong tother side be breaking. But will steer like a new one for this frugal customer. Looks like ya'll fixed her up better than new unless ya'll ran her too long pulling her in, then the head gasket will let go in a couple days.
@hester781

The front spindles could definitely be beefed up. I like the cast iron front axles much better. You’re absolutely right about those head gaskets though! luckily I only ran it about a minute and shit it off, knock on wood he’s been using it ever since 👍🏻

I was thinking about the oil release system on the riding mower. What do you think about installing a little pipe on the end of the oil stem with a shut off value of some type? taking into consideration you would need to pipe thread a small extension of pipe with a 90 degree elbow which would eliminate oil running were it shouldn't
@hester781
@hester781 Жыл бұрын
Personally, I absolutely hate the oil drain system on these engines. Every one I get that is leaking. I replace it with black pipe, 3 inch piece thread it right into the block then add a 90 and a plug and it’s perfect. I’ve never tried a shut off valve but I know other people have done it and it works great. I just get nervous about things getting bumped or leaking without my knowledge.

@hester781
@hester781 Жыл бұрын
I hate when that happens. You do not have to pull the deck to get that spring back on. Just lower it to its lowest setting and you should be able to reach under there. If that’s still not enough room, in the past, I have disconnected the front of the mower deck from the machine and jacked up the front end with the floor jack so basically the mower deck stays down and the mower goes up. Just gives you a little more room and makes things easier to see. Hope this helps.👍🏻

Interesting! With a manual trans? I’ve seen a similar thing happen when the belt was super stretched out. I’d start with making sure the belt is tight and the pulleys are all good and don’t have any flat spots on them, if all of that is good, then unfortunately I suspect it must be a problem inside the gear case
@philliphall5198

So first thing I would say is make sure you clean the metal surface the coil mounts too to ensure a good connection, then make sure you have a proper gap between the coil and the flywheel, I use a business card. If you still have no spark after that I would disconnect the kill wire from the coil. And you should almost definitely have spark at that point. Please Let me know if this helps 👍🏻

Buttoned it back up,turned the key to lights...and no lights. I can hear the magnetic plunger going up and down in the carb solenoid,when the key is turned on and off...so the key switch is working. I also cleaned the plug to plug contacts to the lights wiring harness. Still no lights. What gives??? Thanks for any input to this...

Very Interesting. So I would start by getting a volt meter and first check the plug at the base of the hood where the headlights plug-in for power with the engine running and the switch in the on position. If you have no power then I would go to the headlight switch and see if you have power in and out. It’s kind of a lot to type into a comment but that is a good place to start. @hester781
@hester781 2 ай бұрын
You won’t find grease fittings on most of these non-commercial style spindles. And on the homeowner grade spindles that do have grease fittings they are basically a waste of grease because the bearings they use are sealed lol. There are guys who take them apart and remove the inner seal from the bearings and drill/tap a grease fitting into the housing but it’s an awful lot of work for not much gain

How the hell can you get water into mower fuel? Ive never had that problem in 70yrs l ways fill my garden machinery using funnel with filter, tractor bas inline filter gravity fed,ive also fitted fuel tap to tank,so l can run carb dry end of season!

The ethanol in todays fuel is mostly to blame. It attracts moisture especially when fuel sits around a while, plus condensation inside the tank etc. I see this a lot

I've got questions about hanging a 42 inch deck on a craftsman that was carrying a 50 inch deck. I can't get the right side to hang. Its too far back..but have adjusted the front hanging rods as tight as possible . Help

Interesting, unfortunately I haven’t worked with a 50” deck before. Are the deck mounting points similar on both machines? Is the 50” mower a pto driven machine?
@mychiefswonin69

@@hester781 yes they look similar. And yes the 50 inch is an electric pto.

@@hester781 the 42 deck is from an older husqvarna and its going onto the craftsman that was carrying the 50..(the 50 is too big for my gate, so im trying to downsize the deck to fit) the front hanger rods are about 12 inches for each..

@@mychiefswonin69 ahh, I understand. Unfortunately I have been told that you can’t swap decks between PTO and non PTO machines. I think the pulley geometry is also going to be very different.

My LT1000 will not start I put in a new battery, air cleaner, spark plug. It turns over but will not catch. I even sprayed ether in the carburetor and it won’t start. Have any suggestions? Thank you for sharing a great video.

@@hester781 thanks for your quick response. No I haven’t checked for either. When I sprayed the ether it act like it wanted to run but it shut down. I don’t want to run the battery down. Thanks
@hester781
@hester781 10 ай бұрын
@@5smoothstonesproject740 if it starts and dies on ether, that usually indicates a fuel/carburetor issue. If it is trying to start, that is a pretty good indicator that you have spark. From this point, I would try spraying a little more ether into it while it’s cranking and see if you can get it to run for a second or two, that shouldn’t drain the battery down that much. Let me know if you still can’t get it to run for at least a couple seconds.

On these hydrostatic units the fill plug is on top of the trans axle near or under the pulley. The level is supposed to be about an inch below the top of the hole 👍🏻.

can definitely confirm the red disk fuel filter for gravity fed fuel systems. ALWAYS USE THE RED DISK 40 micron for gravity fed fuel systems!. If you use the larger 150 micron filter (commonly found in the big box stores and auto stores and napa), in a gravity fed fuel system, your engine will be running lean and idle will be way too high....this one simple mistake can cause alot of problems with overheating, valve damage, spark plug damage, head cylinder and piston damage. You want to use the red disk 40 micron simple gravity fed fuel filter for gravity fed fuel system engines. the 40 micron screen inside is large enough to allow full gravity flow but also just enough filter area to prevent debris from fouling the carb. Over time, it is a good idea to remove the red disk fuel filter and reverse blast with carb cleaner or brake cleaner and then a blast of compressed air..but not too much pressure. This is a good way to clean the internal filter and blast it back out the other side. (remove of course from all fuel lines)
