The world of digital artwork unfortunately includes digital thieves who copy vector files from platforms like Etsy and then either use them for their own projects, or bundle them together and sell them as their own art. I hate digital thieves and you should do everything possible to protect yourself from getting ripped off. In this video I have 3 tips on how you can deter thieves from stealing your artwork from platforms like Etsy.

I’m more concerned about thieves buying my digital files and reselling them, particularly public domain images that I’ve restored. How do I protect against that?

You have that in your terms of use. if it's in your TOS, and you see someone selling your files you can take them to Small Claims court, or issue a DCMA, you tell the vendor platform and they can ban their store.

The issue I have with the small designs is once an SVG (Bitmap) is made it can be scaled without distortion so I totally agree with opting to use multiple ie watermark, mockup, and tags which cover a portion of the design. Any serious designer like myself will obviously take pride in and want to use their own work even if their design was inspired by another's example!

Fantastic tips. I use light grey lines across my designs, but didn’t think about the mockup.

There are a few con artists on Instagram who DM me to promote on their site and twice they simply screenshot my Instagram post image and reposted it on their Instagram acct. I DM to remove my images, they ignored me so reported them to Instagram, and my image was removed and their acct canceled.

I also would be interested in the answer to Steve Seidlers question below. Is there anything a person can do once somebody buys the digital files?

Can people copy and paste colored digital prints? Should I watermark those too? Thanks
@craftystax

I would say pretty much anything online is at least in theory able to be copied (with varying degrees of resolution). Sometimes even watermarking a tiny piece will help!

On my Creative Fabrica dashboard, it says to create a Behance page and to add my favorite products. How can I prevent thieves from stealing my art on Behance? Should I add the same thumbnails that I have on Creative Fabrica to Behance?
@craftystax
@craftystax 2 жыл бұрын
For Behance, I would just add in a watermark right over your images - the purpose of the Behance page is to show off your work so a watermark won't negative impact that.

How does one watermark a thumbnail? Do I take out the mockup I made and watermark it and add it back in? I'm confused with pod items. Most of the mock ups I use are within the Printify site. I have alot of unique photos on products and are going to start adding in large wall art.

Hey there-the easiest method (at least for me) is to place the watermark in whatever program you are using to make the thumbnail. So if you are creating your thumbnail using Photoshop, you would put the watermark in Photoshop. I'm not sure if Printify has their own watermarking but if you use graphic design software and are creating your own thumbnails, adding them in during the thumbnail is pretty easy.

Would you also recommend doing these for mock up’s for digital & printable planners?

I think digital planners and printables is a great niche (there are lots of opportunities there)! Absolutely!

I would think so - the idea here is to protect your hard work whether it is digitally created or traditional!

My question is "When the customer purchases it, how do upload the image so the watermark does not print?"
@craftystax
@craftystax 2 жыл бұрын
You put your watermark on the thumbnail (which is what everyone can see). The actual purchased digital files are in a zip folder that is purchased.

How to legally copyright our svg files as a bundle?
@craftystax
@craftystax 2 жыл бұрын
Legally, you have copyright the instant that you create a piece of original artwork. However, you can register the copyright as well (it would depend on what country you are in, like for example I live in Canada so I would register the copyright here: www.ic.gc.ca/eic/site/cipointernet-internetopic.nsf/eng/wr03915.html)

Which website I can put copyright to my digital art
@craftystax
@craftystax 2 жыл бұрын
Your digital art already has copyright the moment you create it. However, if you want to register the copyright, you can certainly do so (just google "register copyright" and then the name of your country). Each country has its own copyright office. Hope that helps!
