I've honestly never met a player who has said a nice word about Rafa. They don't disrespect him but they always hold back with the praise. Apparently he was very passive and distant and very negative. Like if you scored a hat trick he would have ten negative things to say about your performance and never put you over. Crouchy on is podcast as said that if you ever gave him any advice he would do the opposite to spite you. Like if Crouchy scored two in the first half and told Rafa "I've got them. Don't take me off in the second half because I'm going to score a tone of goals." ten minutes into the second half he'd come off. In the 2007 champions league final Crouchy was actually top scorer in the entire tournament going into the final and he said something about playing and Rafa put him on the bench. As a Liverpool fan for me Rafa was great with great players. Gerrard, Torres, Alonso, Mascherano, Reina. If you were a cant miss player he would get the best out of you. But he was terrible at taking a young players and making them great or taking a good player and elevating them. Guys like Ryan Babel, Dosenna, Riera, Kuyt, Lucas, Mark Gonzales, Sissoko etc all came in with buzz and they just regressed over time. Kuyt became a legend but for the wrong reasons. He came in as this potential superstar goalscorer and was thrown on the wing because he was an expensive flop and became a workhorse right winger who couldn't dribble, cross or run very fast. Even guys like Paletta, N'Gog and Insua actually came into the club as big prospects and they just died a death under Rafa. I always said any success Rafa had at Liverpool was because Gerrard would kill himself on the pitch to compensate for all the average bodies around him.

And its probably fair to say he's failed at every club since (bar Newcastle maybe). 14 years and failure after failure. Mourinho said rafa destroyed the best team in Europe in 6 months and its true.

But alonso also was young player when he first came in and he made him better over the time.

@@hashshashiinme7656 Alonso was a top talent when we signed him. We actually somehow beat Madrid to his signature. The guys who came in complete like Torres and Alonso and even Mascherano were amazing. He got the best out of them and they got better. But 80% of his signings that were big prospects or on the cusp of being great players all died under Rafa. So many signings came in with buzz and just regressed. He must have signed 30 players and the only ones who progressed were the ones who were cant miss guys.

Why do people keep saying they would have kept Mane like it was Klopps decision to sell him? Klopp wanted to keep Sadio, it was Sadio who wanted to leave, actually Klopp managed to keep Mane another season...people need to get their facts right

Robbie Keane was a strange signing. As a Liverpool supporter I was made up with him but Benitez just didn’t want him even though he scored a few goals. I think Rick Parry might have had a say on him coming. That’s why Rafa sold him back to Tottenham after 4-5 months. Liverpool nearly won the league that season as well. Imagine if Keane had of stayed? Could have won it.

You could see with a different coach how it might have worked, because Robbie was a proper #10 and Torres could play so we'll off the shoulder, leading the line. Could have recreated Keane/Defoe, except better. But as Bellamy said, Robbie wasn't allowed to be Robbie.

From I heard Benitez didn’t want Keane, but the board signed him. So Benitez refused to play him out of principle. I get it, but always felt sorry for Keane he was a great player and would have been great for us, and Benitez and the board killed his career as collateral damage.

Exactly at that time, Milan’s defence was old and slow and had a known weakness in the air. So Benitez kept Crouch and Bellamy on the bench 😂

@@dman9152 Pennant played albeit on the other wing and didn't show his pace in that final. He was more a tricky winger rather than a pace merchant, which Bellamy was an excellent powerful shot btw too. But yeah Benitez played Kuyt I'm guessing wide right?

Look, I'm a United fan, but Benitez set Liverpool up brilliantly in midfield. Mascherano and Alonso were world class, Gerrard overrated. They did the Donkey Work for Gerrard to get the goals and glory. Same with Bellingham now that Kroos/Modric/Camavinga can't bail him out for England. Even Chelsea Lampard would get the glory but Makelele or Ballack/Essien/Mikel would do the donkey work in midfield and keeping the ball all that stuff for Lampard to score an unbelievable amount of goals late from the box too. Hyypiä also led the backline exceptionally well. After he left you were crap defensively until maybe when Robertson and Van Dijk came. Benitez is underrated If not for Ronaldo and Vidic dragging United over the line, Liverpool would have won it in 2009. Benitez was a much better manager than Gerrard ever was as a player.
