That Liverpool 2001 treble squad was one of the best Liverpool have had in the last 30 years. Owen, Fowler, Litmanen, Heskey, Gerrard, Murphy, Hamann, McAllister, Redknapp, Barmby, Berger, Smicer, Hyppia, Carragher, Babbel, Ziege etc. They should have reached a CL final the year after but went out to Leverkusen in the quarters in a freak game.
@sebastianvella8992
@sebastianvella8992 Ай бұрын
Ziege was simply awesome. I know he was there for a short period of time , but he is the best left back we ever had even better than Robertson who is a legend and Alan Kennedy who scored a winning goal in a European Cup final and is also a Liverpool super legend.
@theenforcer22
@theenforcer22 Ай бұрын
@@sebastianvella8992 he wasn’t awesome for Liverpool. He was there one season, and wasn’t first choice. Didn’t get picked at left back - Jamie Carragher started both the FA cup final & UEFA cup final at left-back. Gregory Vignal a rookie 19 year old left-back was preferred on the bench to Zeige for both those finals. So I’m not sure how a third choice left back who was there one season eclipsed every other left-back in Liverpool’s history.
@sebastianvella8992
@sebastianvella8992 Ай бұрын
@@theenforcer22 He was first choice until he got injured. Not even Carragher himself would say that he was a better full back or overall player than Ziege as he would have all of Europe laughing at him. In the 80's are left backs were Alan Kennedy who is a legend, Beglin whose career was cut short by injury and Burrows. Only Kennedy can argue he was better than Ziege. However his overall career was still inferior to Ziege. In the 1990's our left backs were fatso Dicks, right back Jones who was awesome as a right back forced to play as as a left wing back by stupid Evans and later we had boring Byornebe. Who in his right mind would argue for any of them over Ziege. In the era after Ziege we had Riise who had a great shot, but was not good at defending and certainly no one can argue he was better than Ziege. In the last decade before Robertson we had poor left backs mostly Spanish, Brazilian and Italians the variuos Aurelio, Insua, Enrique, Moreno and the Italian guy who scored the freekicks. All of them forgettable. As for the later Shankly era it was mostly Alec Lindsay who played as left back and yes from what I've seen in videos he was very good. Joey Jones who played in the first European Cup triumph was a Welsh International, but was arguably the weakest player on that fantastic squad. From what I've read Gerald Byrne was also a very competent left back in the 1960's and was part of Ramsey's 1966 squad.
@theenforcer22
@theenforcer22 Ай бұрын
@@sebastianvella8992 Zeige was a great left back yes, but my point is that his reputation is not based on his time at Liverpool. He got injured yes, but by the end of the season he couldn’t even make the bench for two big finals behind the likes of Stephen Wright and Gregory Vignal. Houllier wasted no time getting rid of him at the end of the season. Zeige even himself would say his one season at Liverpool was a low point in his career. He actually regretted joining. That’s not a successful stint. No need to body shame Julian Dicks, he was just big boned. I get what you’re saying, but it’s more a case that Zeige was one of the best left backs AT Liverpool, not FOR Liverpool.

Back in 2005 I was at the Everton v Charlton game at Goodison Park in the period David Moyes was in charge. Danny was in the Charlton team and stood out in midfield. Michel Arteta in direct opposition struggled against him. Danny once said he had the chance of joining Everton around this time, but loyalties got in the way. That afternoon James Beattie, a big money signing from Southampton made his debut for Everton and never quite made it. Danny went on to play for Spurs. This seems to show how clubs pay huge fee's for players even today who don't fit in, yet have long term contacts which handicaps a club moving them on. If Danny would have crossed the Park, he would have improved the Everton team back then, no end.
