And Germany went onto thrashing England and Argentina by similar margins at this tournament. After this game Verbeek still managed to get 4 points and we were unlucky not to progress into the knock-outs. We haven't won a game at a world cup since. Disgraceful behaviour and total delusions of grandeur from Foster here....

Australia would never have stood a chance against Germany even if the team did have a plan. Germany has finished top 3 for most world cups and have a superior academy system that trains players from childhood, plus most Germans stay in the Bundesliga and so have more team cohesion than the 11 Australian blokes that get together only every 4 years. Plus what does he mean Aussies die on their feet? Nobody thinks Aussies are tough just because Niell and Muscat slide in hard and break legs.

If you actually listened he said it was not the fact we lost to Germany but the manner in which we played. Verbeek put up the white flag before a ball was kicked with his team selection. Look at the difference now, a team with a fraction of the ability of the 2010 players is taking on the opposition full pelt and gaining enormous respect from the football world and the aussie public. That's what is meant by dying on our feet. Going out there and giving it a red hot go!

Craig Foster doesn't have much faith in Australian Football. He said clearly time and again it would take 32 years for there to be any improvement. I said in 2014 before the world cup that it would take 1 year. Ange thinks along the same lines. We've probably had the best win / loss record since 1st January 2015 of any country in the world. Also he had no faith in Ange as you can see from the other video here Craig Foster v Ange.

It is incredible that the team that Verbeek sent on the park was so peculiar to analysts and amateurs and housewives alike. Thankyou Verbeek for sending Australia out to the slaughter. Two million dollars - job well performed! We were lucky that the score wasn't 8-0. Germany had so many chances. How would that have looked? That score would have certainly reflected back on the coach. And then he would have been made to be answerable.

Harry Kewell said himself: they shouldve just gone out there and played a game of football. and play with their heart. this is what fozzie's saying - we were held back, and we should have put our best possible performance down against the germans because as we saw, the fearful approach we took to that match punished us with a -4 goal difference which saw us eliminated in the end, even after beating croatia. had they a coach who let them play and play hard, we'd have gone through to round of 16

In addition, I don't think you need to have been a world class coach either, to criticize someone. I never said Foster had a great career, but he played professionally for most of it, again someone who was paid to play football, I think has the right to criticize.
@briggm
@briggm 14 жыл бұрын
@spielberg01... But he didn't send out the weakest team, did he? He essentially sent out our best 11, with the exception of an unfit Kewell, Kennedy, and arguably Bres. Pim's strategy was clear to see: try to contain and hope Tim could pop up with a goal to either win or draw the match. He played with his customary 2 holding midfielders, moved Culina to the left (likely to slow down Lahm) and brought in the industrious Garcia to harry the German defenders. He was hardly trying to throw the game.

it's not the players. look at france for an example of what bad leadership does to a team, no matter how good the individual players are. whereas on the other hand look at how decent players responded to good leaderhip and tactics when guus hiddink managed south korea 2002 and australia 2006.
@Romans8-9
@Romans8-9 11 жыл бұрын
Thats rubbish, he played for Australia many times, I'd hardly call that an average career. Regardless, just because he wasn't the Messi of his era, doesn't mean he isn't an expert. He has probably watched more games than you've had hot meals, I think he's more than qualified to criticize. Some legendary coaches are amazing tactical practitioners who themselves had very ordinary playing careers, Arsene Wenger, Alex Ferguson, Felipe Scolari, the list goes on. Your logic is flawed.

Socceroos drawbacks were oversees people : The ref who sent Cahill off for 1.5 games. The ref who sent Kewell off for 1.80 games. Pim Verbeek who sent Kewell off for 1 game. Sepp Blatter who doesn't want replays so he can control who wins or loses. The refs who didn't see two deliberate German handballs. The ref who doesn't see Ghana tackles. Aussies should have won last two world cups if treated fairly.

@thermalz0mbie... I'm not English, I live in England. Anyway, I understand what Foster meant - what I'm saying is that it's a stupid idea. No coach in the world would work under those conditions and nor should they. There's a good reason why teams aren't run that way, and that's because it's an unworkable situation. What would lead anybody to believe that a committee comprised of Foster, Tobin, Okon, Vidmar, Horvat etc are in any way qualified to devise strategy at the top level of the game?

Your point was that because he had an ordinary playing career he wasn't qualified to criticize. I just refuted that by pointing out that several people who are also ordinary players are considered experts without ever being "good" players. Les Murray is also considered an expert even though he never played a professional game in his life. Either way, I think playing for your nation in any sport more than qualifies someone as an expert.

A lot of coaches are crazy though and leave out the best players. My Mum knows not to leave out Kewell from the team. Hiddink left out Schwarzer and Cahill. Maybe two assistants to correct the head coach when the head coach goes crazy. Was Arnold scared to tell Pim off ? There's not much between winning and losing, but the refs were 70% to blame though. Pim the other 30%. Managers should know that changes should be small. We should have known in the trials Kewell wasn't playing. Speilberg coach.

BREAKING: Craig Foster attacks Craig Foster on live TV. During his regular segment 'Craig Foster Attacks People' on SBS, the former Socceroo made the shocking claim that Craig Foster was an over-rated forward who was waaaaay too defensive during his all-too-short career of little note. "Craig Foster needs to take a long, hard look at himself and fall on his sword", said Foster, the former goal-less Albion Park City striker. Foster continued, "If Foster fails to act then SBS, or whoever employs him these days, needs to sack him. Foster has failed and everybody except Foster can see that". Foster is no stranger to controversy, having previously attacked every former player and coach in Australia since he burst onto the scene as a grey-haired 17 year old defensive forward for winless, relegated West Wonthaggi in the Lower Upper Gippsland B Grade reserve team in 1962. Craig Foster holds the Australian record as the only player to play for a relegated team in every season of football played. Craig Foster has been contacted for comment.

It seems to me that the only thing Foster cares about is giving out about a manager, no matter who he is. He was criticising Ange few years ago and was made look a fool afterwards. I’m not a professional football manager but if I was managing a team against Germany, I would put out a very defensive team also. Australia were beaten by four goals, but Germany are certainly at least four times better than Australia. Ireland have a very average football team but they’d beat Australia more often than the other way round. Try and get behind your team mate, not constantly tearing their manager to shreds. By the way, Ange won the 2021/22 Scottish league with Celtic - this Celtic team would rip Australia a new one, never mind what Germany did to them

@hipete2008 You have to be insane. And please do tell me what elite level has Craig Foster played at? He is a critic, nothing else. I respect the guy how he loves his country and has feelings. But his comments to sack the coach one game into the World Cup is ridiculous! No one does that, Australia shouldn't be the first. Having said that, I thought Pim's tactics and the use of his substitutes for the other two games were very good. unfortunately, we came short of the mark.

Fozzie sometimes goes overboard and makes ridiculous comments. Who sacks a coach during the World Cup? Pim stuffed up the first game, but I thought his tactics were very good for the 2nd and 3rd game. Unfortunately, the first game killed us and was always catch up since then.

As much as I hate Fozzie, he does raise some valid points. The performance was Pim's fault, the players did their best given the ridiculous formation. If you're going to bring strikers at least play them, poor Timmy was all at sea as the 'striker'. What was he thinking, playing essentially a 4-6-0 formation, yet with the defenders playing so high up? The likes of Moore and Chipperfield aren't even up to international standard let alone playing the offside trap against the speedy Germans.

@waheedrulzatsoccer i agree with you man.....right at the first pim's play style is like playing rugby.....man mindless long cross......against germany....and against all teams.....wtf is wrong.....in 2006 while we was under hiddink we didnt play like that...out players were constantly moving in terms of attacking and defending......and look at this years world cup....we are not doing that...and that is wht costs us...look at newzealand they did really good,so there is no excuse.
