I play guitar and have since about 77 and he's got some type of effect he's using when he's tapping way down at the neck that I wish I could figure out what it is he's using.. It almost sounds like his tech is using a pitch shifting pedal and really rocking it back and forth when he's doing that wild tapping at the extreme part of the neck next to the pickups! Very cool.. Just incredible solo..
@TCraigGoldy8 ай бұрын
@hoosierdaddy2308 Thank you for that! The audio is slightly off giving the appearance of seeing me being elsewhere on the fretboard than what you hear. The portion you referenc has no fx's on it. Otherwise I couldn't go into the riff/rhythm part without shutting off the fx's first. And I don't have anyone in the back doing it for me. All my guitar friends had wealthy parents and they had all the gadgets and latest foot pedals and fx's. So I had to learn how to make sound effects with a dry sound. If I used anything on the "Video Game" portion and the finger tapping on the fretboard it would be cheating. It's just the audio isn't totally synced with the visual for a lot of this video. But...thank you for that! If I were using fx's I'd be more than happy to tell you!!

Honestly I would be fibbing if saying I've been familiar with Mr. Goldy's top shelf shredding and uniqueness. I'm sure through out my subscription to Guitar Player magazine he was high lighted and or interviewed . Understandably we had very limited access to video footage of many manic up and comers , who practiced and then practiced more. The 80's was a time of great influence and true goal setting to learn how to approach the guitar with lead as the focus and praise. Rhythm was not always the key of importance. Hence the "butt rock" vibe we recognize. Now days some bands just use the lead guitar technique as the rhythm. Things have progressed quite significantly with the internet and evolution of competition.

I remember using that bit then, and the Japanese company I was endorsing at the time asked me to use one of their newer models that night....and it went out of tune just slightly before I played that bit and had to tune it right then and there on stage!!! Andrew Young Actually.....Thomas is my legal first name.....and when I tried to sign up for a user name for youtube....my name....Craig Goldy was already taken!! But this is Craig! And I appreciate all the nice comments! And many are right about Viv....he created some amazing solos and riffs.....but also under the guidance of Ronnie! Viv hasn't created anything near that great since! I'm a late bloomer.....and most of my best stuff hasn't been captured! Some off of my 1st solo album "Hidden In Plain Sight" was pretty close.....not with the Eisley stuff....but with my band Ritual....like the song "In Over My Head".....that one is pretty cool! And this latest album getting ready to come out called "Dream Child" is pretty good too! We have Rudy Sarzo and Simon Wright.....Simon plays his ass off on this album.....and a surprise vocal discovery out of Argentina....Diego Valdez.....he is chilling! A new song came out a little while ago called "You Can't Take Me Down" with a very cool chorus and riff.....the song and video coming out today called "Under The Wire" is pretty in your face!! The album officially comes out on Sept 14th......it will be interesting to see how people react to this album!! Thanks guys!!

I should give my honest opinion here. First up, there was never a bad guitarist in Dio. If I were to rank them, Rowan Robertson and Doug Aldrich would tie for 3rd spot, only because they've appeared on one album each. Both are outstanding players. Tracy G is in the middle. I know a lot of people don't like him at all and that's a shame. I really enjoy his unique tone on Strange Highways and Angry Machines. On top, Vivian Campbell and Craig Goldy are on equal grounds. If I'm being truly honest however, I think Craig's guitar work is more enjoyable for me. But first 3 albums with Vivian are classics. I absolutely love Dream Evil and recently acquired Magica and Master of The Moon. I was blown away by how good the guitar was. So yes, I would agree with many others that Craig Goldy is most definitely underrated. I have this concert on DVD and on CD. That's how much I like it ! I truly hope you get the chance to read this, Craig. And thank you for all your amazing work with the late RJD.

Thank you Luc! This has to be one of the nicest comments I've ever gotten!! Actually.....I was quite jealous of both Rowan & Doug for starters! The albums that they did were outstanding!! And the over-all sound was amazing too!! Then Traci-G is just on a whole different planet in the best possible way!! I was quite jealous of his contributions too! There was a lot of guitar riffs and darker turns on the albums these guys did and I remember thinking to myself "why did he let them spread their wings so wide and far and not me?" Now that the studio version of the song "Time to Burn" is available to hear.....that was the guitar tone I was hoping to use for the Dream Evil album..... and I had a lot of darker and twisted song ideas that got turned down for Dream Evil as well. And when I was forced to try and get a great sound out of the stock JCM 800....it was like having my hands tied behind my back while watching someone choke and could do nothing about it. No modified amps...no other amp....the amp I used on "Time to Burn" wasn't a JCM 800 so therefore I wasn't allowed to use it on the Dream Evil album. And it really stumped me!! And then I remembered the day at rehearsal just before the Dream Evil tour....Ronnie looked at me and said "I want to pass the torch onto you kid"! His best friend and tour assistant was standing right next to us and he was quite blown away too!! He said to me...."Do you know what this actually means"? For me....being in Dio wasn't a gig....it wasn't a job.....it was a Dream Come True!! And Ronnie God Bless him kept me in learning mode all the way up to his passing. He even showed me his method for melodies and lyrics! Some of the lyrics and song ideas for the Dream Child album shows that a bit.....and my first solo album "Hidden in Plain Sight" shows a bit of where I was.....the over-all sound on the "Hidden in Plain Sight" album was the closest to the sound recording quality I was looking for then! The "Dream Child" album has quite a bit of the ideas.....but out of all that.......I think it was the way he and I worked together that I treasure the most! Getting to stay by his side while he autographed and hung out with his fans until 3am or so....the way he was with them....the work ethic he had.....the imagination without boundaries that he had and shared with me and the rest of the world! The many hours, days, weeks, months and years of just the 2 of us working side by side as he poured all the information into my little brain as he could.....is just now taking shape!! Vivian Cambell is and will always be THEE quintessential Dio guitarist! There's no question about that! And some day soon.....I'll be able to put out the album that can pull all this together into one!! I'm getting closer!! But thank you Luc for this wonderful and insightful comment of yours! When I read the part about that you hope I get a chance to read it really hit me in the chest....in a good way.....and I wanted to be able to reply without the huge time restraints that I've been under lately!! Thank you!!

Hello Craig (or Thomas if you prefer that ;)), I can understand the immense pressure you must have felt when you first appeared on stage with Ronnie. You had BIG shoes to fill and I think, judging by the overall crowd response during your solo, that you earned their admiration. Thus far, this concert and Holy Diver Live (featuring Doug Aldrich) are the only DIO band shows I have. Only just last week did I finally give in and order the Hammersmith 1993 one featuring Tracy G. Too bad there isn't DVD releases for Vivian and Rowan out there, I would have loved to see these too. I consider myself quite open-minded. To give an example, with Black Sabbath, so many people claim Technical Ecstacy, Never Say Die and Forbidden to be the absolute worst of its storied discography. I have them all, listen to them fairly often and find myself scratching my head as I don't see what's so horrible about the those. Sure, there are duds here and there, but not enough to make them completely unlistenable. The same applies with the DIO band, there are some who completely avoid the Tracy G era, writing off those albums as train wrecks. I'm just not seeing it. And I'm going to be honest here, even Dream Evil isn't 100% perfect. No matter how hard I try, I can't get myself to enjoy Overlove. Other than that, the rest is really strong, especially Sunset Superman and All The Fools Sailed Away. On Magica, Feed my Head is my least favourite. Fever Dreams and As Long as It's Not About Love are my personal favourites. Everything else is really strong too. For Master of The Moon, The Man Who Would be King is my least favourite. One More for The Road, the Title Track, I Am and In Dreams are my faves. The rest is really good too. So barring a couple of less-than-stellar tracks, the albums are strong overall. I'm glad that my comment brought a smile to your face and tugged a little bit at your heartstrings. Hoping this one does too. Do take care during these crazy times.

I saw Dio for the first time, at the German Monsters of Rock in Nuremberg and Pforzheim, it was '87. The Festivals were great, with Helloween, Metallica, Deep Purple, Cinderella etc. The guitar solo by Craig Goldy, in Nuremberg, is best remembered to this day.

He's undeniably a very talented player. I don't personally like the style, but you can't deny the level of technical skill he exhibits. I'll always be a Vivian fan, for the simple fact that he was part of the chemistry that made this band what it was, but Craig was certainly phenomenal.

Killer tone! Typical two handed tapping that at the time was becoming popular with many others guitarists who from the 80’s Hard Rock/Metal era like AkiiraTakasaki, Steve Lynch, Jeff Watson, and of course Steve Vai.

I saw dio live with craig goldie on guitar, it was at bang your head festival in germany in 2003, but craig didn't get to play a guitar solo like the one you upload, and i can understand the reason why, he could steal the show from ronnie james dio, paul stanley once said that vinnie vincent was fired from kiss because he stole the show from him and from gene simmons when he played his five to six minutes guitar solo every show, i always knew that craig is a master of the guitar, it was enough to see him playing the guitar solos from dio songs, rainbow songs and black sabbath songs to know that, he played them effortlessly, as we all know dio plays one or two songs of rainbow and black sabbath in his shows, thanks for sharing.
@TCraigGoldy2 жыл бұрын
Thank you for that! I hate to disagree with you....but nobody and I mean nobody could steal the show from Mr. Ronnie James Dio! If I didn't do a solo that night it would've been a time limit thing and not doing a solo would've contributed to doing another song instead and I remember us having to do things like that when Ronnie wasn't the Headliner or if he was then there was a severe penalty for going over a very strict time limit!! Ronnie had respect for those things!! But thank you for the nice compliment! I appreciate it!!
