I was skiing at Breckenridge the day after Deep Purple's Perfect Strangers show in Denver. They were all there and Giuffria too. The Purple dudes were skiing double diamond blacks, I'm not kidding. My friend and his brother followed them up the mountain on the gondola but they were very skilled skiers. We saw Blackmore, Gillan and Pace go down a double diamond black at a breakneck speed I thought only pros were capable of. We never did catch up to them. Later we had some hot chocolate with the singer of Giuffria and Gregg Giuffria himself who had the most incredible hair I have ever seen on a human being.

@@TCraigGoldy Craig Goldy was by far the best metal guitar player of the 80's post Randy. The fastest, most technical player to ever be in any top tier metal band. Every bit as good as Malmsteen and MacAlpine but also he could play rhythm and sell records and get radio play.

I met Ritchie a few times along the way backstage at concerts. I think he could see I was calm and not a weird fan and each time invited me to the hotel bar for a pint. He was open and nice to me each time. He’s done a lot to create a persona as he was taught by Screaming Lord Sutch but in real life he’s a very “down to earth” guy with very unique experiences. He’s a professional and acts like it, when he’s not testing or prancing people. He’s my guitar hero all the way. I’m glad Goldy had a great experience with him.

Thanks everyone over at FullinBloom!! And on Thanksgiving!!!! Wow what a nice surprise to find this!! I think the most important thing is that Ritchie Blackmore was a total gentleman!! I loved going out in the crowd to see them and hear them live for the very first time!! It was amazing! Depending on who's telling the story about DP messing with our lights and monitors was in my opinion done because everyone in Giuffria except for Krigger ( the drummer) and myself all walked around with a sense of entitlement and I'm sure that is why whatever "bad" thing happened....it didn't affect Krigger or myself!! All the DP guys are total pros and they all were total gentlemen....all of them!! Gregg, Dave and Chuck always acted aloof and entitled on that tour! Not so much on the Foreigner tour.....perhaps they learned their lesson by then!! Thanks again guys!!

@@TCraigGoldy I remember from way back in the day you saying that you met Ronnie and told him how much you'd love to be in his band, and then it actually happening. And honestly, as great as it must have been, stepping in after Vivian had to have been maybe the second most difficult role to fill, next to Jake coming into Ozzy after Randy, albeit Vivian didn't pass away. And you both just freaking killed it. Not only great players, but great performers too. You two have got the best stage swagger (and hair 😆) in the game, not to mention the playing. I might have the tour wrong, I've seen Dio several times, but I think Yngwie opened and you did your solo with the lasers and the spider...blew my mind! And the guitar tone...I listen to the live videos here on YT and I don't think I've heard a better,, crisper,, easy to hear tone.. by easy to hear I mean I can hear every chord and riff and note with such clarity..its never a struggle to hear any part.. thats probably due to the quality and ability of the player too😉. I really love your solo stuff too. And the talent in Guiffria was undeniable, but not quite "metal" enough for my taste. Thank you so much for taking the time to have this interaction with me. One good thing about social media. I'm still blown away to be having this exchange with one of my idols. A fan for life❤
@TCraigGoldy

@@MrEricPymm Thank you Eric! I'm just a fan that got in the band!! To read your kind words is still very surreal to me! I'll never forget that night.....I was in the band Rough Cutt.....Ronnie was the producer and Wendy was the manager. We had late night recording studio sessions to get a good rate.....I was sitting on the floor American Indian style and Ronnie was sitting in the chair next to the console....and he looked at me and said "Goldy.....if Viv ever doesn't work out... you'd be my first choice"! That alone was amazing....actually just being able to meet him was amazing....but being in his band was an honest Dream Come True!! I agree about Giuffria....it's the main reason I left.....mostly cause I had the amazing opportunity to work with Rudy Sarzo and Tommy Aldridge right after they left Ozzy....and before Whitesnake. This was so much closer to the kind of music that I both loved and wanted to be a part of as well as be writing with them!! It was then that I got the call to join Dio. Ronnie and I were friends and there were so many nights just the two of us on his couch hanging out and watching Rainbow videos. But this time....I was sitting on his couch as his guitar player! What a mind blower!! I really never got over it! I was always still nervous around him as much as we liked to work and hang out....you just don't get over a dream coming true and it being in the form that this one took....and the ride it took me on!! That tour with the Spider was a very special rig....guitar, amp and foot pedal combo that I didn't get to use on the Dream Evil album.....but it got pushed through the powers that be and it does make a big difference!! Thank you for noticing!! However.....the thin cable that ran behind my guitar neck for the laser was thin.....but thick enough to make the distance between the back of the neck and the strings feel much further than ever before! That was quite an obstacle to overcome on top of the fact that I had a 3rd degree burn on my leg from the video shoot for "All The Fools Sailed Away".....and having to take pain pills before the concert and after each concert we had to make sure that I could have a room with a bath that allowed me to basically scrub a hole in my leg with Clorox Bleach in the water.....every night!! But we got through it!! And when I say "Thank God"....I mean....Thank God!! You know.......when a pure heart makes a wish......and leaves no stone unturned......something magical is going to happen!! Regardless of what anyone else believes!!! Thanks Eric!! I really do appreciate your kind words and I really do appreciate you!!

I think of Ritchie the same way I think of Buddy Rich. Both were brilliant early, both spent most of their lives onstage being acclaimed for their talent and audacity. I’ve hung out with Buddy and had a great time, and I’ve seen him shred and embarrass musicians on the bandstand. I’ve seen Ritchie be a gentleman, and seen him be an utter prick. I don’t think either of them ever really grew up. But man, they both have given us incredible music, incredible playing.

True story.............. I met Richie in the 70s. England, Newcastle City Hall, (could look up the exact dates if needed). Met all of the (Rainbow) band, who were excellent. They did two consecutive nights. Here's the story. First night met all the band members, I was a teenager and a huge Blackmore, Purple, Rainbow fan, (Not sure if 'Fan' is the best terminology!). As a guitarist of many years, (more than I am prepared to mention!!), I was then, and still am convinced that Mr B was/is an absolute league of his own. Anyway, very fortunate to meet all band members, as they arrived. Strange to be standing with Cozy, on his own and couldn't get access in the gig. Funny now on reflection, but Cozy was great. We had a good chat for a while, until the backstage door opened, to let Cozy in. FACT but crazy, Cozy let me in (as the bouncers) screened entrance. Once inside Cozy and myself, were met by Cozy's Dad. An absolutely lovely bloke. He was excellent and gave me an unbelievable tour backstage. At some point, we passed Blackmores dressing room, and it did have a sing on the door indicating something like 'Bagshot Bullet', or something like that, implying 'No Entry'. Cozy Dad, knocked, entered and asked if it was OK for me to meet/see Mr B. FACT = Richie had his back to us, strumming on one of his Stats. Showed NO animosity, and said sure, signaling us to come in. A genuine, great, natural conversation ensured, and Richie was happy to give me his autograph. I thought at the time this to be strange, as he was reputed as not doing autographs!!! He was very pleasant, amicable and down to earth! Being in almost absolute shock and unable to comprehend what was happening, I remember thinking 'remember this, don't go silly, leave them to prepare for the gig'. This was/is an experience that will go with me to my grave, (but it didn't finish there!!!!). Next day (and second night at the City Hall), i was (once again) outside of the venue, stage door, hoping to catch a glimpse of my hero's. When it occurred, I me with Richie again. He was brilliant. I thanked him for the autograph (from the previous night), at which point he looked at me................. smiled (yes he does smile!), and said 'you were the only person to get a autograph last night, and it was good to see me again for the second night'. We had (another) good conversation. As he didn't 'smash' his strat up (on the first night), I asked him if he would be doing this on the second night. He smiled (again) and said, 'that depends on how the night goes, and on the audience'. He was brilliant, a gentleman and a true professional, (as was all of the other band members and family). The second night, he did 'destroy a Strat', and I was very privelidged to experience one of (if not THE best) guitarists EVER. No one can ever take this from me, no one can ever dispute this, (I know, I was there!). Don't believe the negative bullshit, or the egotistical arrogance of some, and don't be mislead by some that are 'bitter'. Blackmore is in a league of his own (and deservedly), has and likes a bit of a 'reputation'. But is without doubt light-years ahead, of all of the critic's, has-beens', rip off merchants, attention seeking, overated, self indulgent, knobs. You either get Mt B, or you don't. I feel VERY sorry for those that don't! You have/will miss out on guitaring history, and a guitar legend. TRUE STORY and one which I value and will cherish to my grave. To those who feel the need to knock Richie, then maybe you have separate issues, (To Thine Ownself Be True). To those who know REAL guitaring skills, then you are able to enjoy, absorb and understand true talent.

Wow . . . I literally decided to put on KZfaq as Im currently reading Jerry Bloom's Unauthorised book on Ritchie Blackmore. Then I came across this. Wow . . . 👍👌 I know two people who have met Blackmore by complete fluke. Flo short for Florence: Met Blackers in '94 at a friend's dinner party. She got on like a house on fire as she didn't know who he was. Yes . . . Ritchie Blackmore absolutely detests people or fans who tell him his the greatest. PS - When Flo asked him about his job, Blackmore said, ' I'm a poorly paid session musician.' He then said "I'm going to start a band that exclusively plays Medieval music." She was stunned when she found out later who he was. Her guitar playing brother wanted to kill her as he was a huge Purple/Rainbow fan.

Sad we'll never see bands like Dio, rainbow again... Ronnie James Dio was absolutely the greatest metal vocalist of our generation and perhaps the best lyricist to ever write and compose songs Dios voice was so transparent and yet he had a edge and range that made him so eunique... Rip Ronnie, jimmy Bain and cozy Powell...

That was one of the Greatest Line Ups ever in the business. Rainbow Rising is a Masterpiece. You have to remember Elf had 3 albums that didn't make it. Then Ritchie Hires the whole band except for the Guitarist. Ritchie was the missing link. Ritchie couldn't turn down Cozy and Jimmy for the second album. Although I know Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow is very under rated.

Craig Goldie can blaze on the guitar. What he did in Dio is only a fraction of what he is capable of. Funny story. At the end of Craig's solo he does runs across the stage and slides on his knees, in Salt Lake City (I think) his roadie decides to put Vaseline on the part where Craig does his knee slide. lol. So Craig does the knee slide.....and slides right off the stage. LOL. LOL. So what does Craig do? climbs back on stage, plugs his guitar back in, and keeps on jamming. lol. That was funny.
@TCraigGoldy

Thank you for the first part of your comment!! Very cool thing to say!! But I'm not sure where you got that story of me sliding.......cause I never slid on stage nor did I ever slide off the stage.....however at one time I practiced a "summersalt" as a jump and role with my guitar on stage.....and when I finally got it down.....there was an outdoor concert where I tried it cause Giuffria were headlining that concert on a day off from the opening slots....and I unplugged myself after the run, jump, role that was supposed to go into the guitar solo of that song while in a stance after all of that....and my tech had to wonder on stage and help me plug back in cause my 2 pedals also came unplugged.....and then the solo section was over.....it's a funny story....and I never tried it again! The singer David Glenn Eisley slid across the stage all the time.....and I think he might've slid off the stage once.....you might be thinking of that!! But thank you!!
