LYRICS:
HE HAD PLASTIC BAGS WRAPPED ROUND HIS SHOES
HE WAS COVERED WITH THE EVENING NEWS
HAD A PAIR OF OLD WOOL SOCKS ON HIS HANDS
THE BANK SIGN WAS FLASHING 5 BELOW
IT WAS FREEZING RAIN AND SPITTIN' SNOW
HE WAS CURLED UP BEHIND SOME GARBAGE CANS
I WAS AFRAID THAT HE WAS DEAD
I GAVE HIM A GENTLE SHAKE
WHEN HE OPENED UP HIS EYES
I SAID, "OLD MAN ARE YOU OK?"
CHORUS
HE SAID, "I JUST CLIMBED OUT OF A COTTONWOOD TREE"
I WAS RUNNIN' FROM SOME HONEY BEES
DRIP DRYIN' IN THE SUMMER BREEZE
AFTER JUMPIN' INTO CALICO CREEK
I WAS WALKIN' DOWN AN OLD DIRT ROAD
PAST A FIELD OF HAY THAT HAD JUST BEEN MOWED
MAN I WISH YOU'D JUST LEFT ME ALONE
‘CAUSE I WAS ALMOST HOME
THEN HE SAID, "I WAS JUST COMIN' ‘ROUND THE BARN"
‘BOUT THE TIME YOU GRABBED MY ARM
WHEN I HEARD MOMMA HOLLER SON HURRY UP
I WAS CLOSE ENOUGH FOR MY OLD NOSE
TO SMELL FRESH COBBLER ON THE STOVE
AND I SAW DADDY LOADIN' UP THE TRUCK
CANE POLES ON THE TAILGATE
BOBBERS BLOWIN' IN THE WIND
SINCE JULY OF '55
THAT'S AS CLOSE AS I’VE BEEN
REPEAT CHORUS
I SAID, "OLD MAN YOU'RE GONNA FREEZE TO DEATH"
LET ME DRIVE YOU TO THE MISSION
HE SAID, "BOY IF YOU LEFT ME ALONE RIGHT NOW I'D BE FISHIN”
REPEAT CHORUS
MAN I WISH YOU'D JUST LEFT ME ALONE
‘CAUSE I WAS ALMOST HOME
MAN I WISH YOU'D JUST LEFT ME ALONE
I WAS ALMOST HOME

Music doesn't care about race, creed or color, and neither do I!! Last time I checked we were all human beings, do blind people judge you by color?? I happen to be white, but could have been black, Asian or other!! I don't judge, I love all people!! Unless they do me wrong!!

The trip the old man talks about is the exact trip from my grandpa's place where I lived until i was 5 years old then moved down the road with my folks to where I'm sitting tonight writing this. The field, the creek, the honey bees, the old truck with the fishing poles in the tail gate and the cobbler. I can't hear this song without tearing up over it because he's singing about the road I walked and road my bicycle on when I was little. At least to me it feels like it. 🤛 The only other song that chokes me up this bad is one by Randy Travis " I thought he walked on Water ' kzfaq.info/get/bejne/m6mGqpuCz8vLaGg.html

God rest your Great Grandfathers soul my friend! My Grandmother passed February 7th 1998 and one week before she departed, she saw her husband at the foot of her bed (Papa passed 1977) and was wide awake when she “saw” him! I guess what I’m saying is that once this life is over....the next one begins! God Bless!

Many years ago on his death bed, my grandfather spent the last 4 hours of his life speaking in German with his brother. His brother had been dead nearly 30 years and my grandfather hadn"t spoken fluid, conversational German since he was a boy, speaking nothing but German at home. My grandfather's nurse was kind enough to tell us all about his last few hours, and said she thought it was interesting that when he spoke there would be the usual pauses as if listening to what was being said to him, etc All of this simply went to support what I've felt all my life...that what we're doing here is far from the End Of It.

My Daddy , Sgt. Charles A. Silcox ,United States Army, passed on December 26th 2021. In his last couple months he would be talking to his family that had already passed. We would wake him for his meds and its would startle him, PTSD. He would say " Man, why did you wake me up...?" Daddy told us stories of Vietnam and the Dairy Farm he grew up on. I played and sang this song at his service, right before the 21 guns, and the 2 soldiers folded Old Glory and presented to my Mother. God Bless Our Soldiers! Thank You Sir for a wonderful song! Love You Daddy!!! Thank You for Everything!!! See You Later!!

Agreed. I grew up in the 60s south on "an old dirt road" in a sharecropper tenant house with a creek about a half mile away. Lots of working in the field during the summer but also a lot of lazy days fishing and seeking relief from the heat by jumping in the swimming hole. This song reminds me so much of those simpler times. Brings a tear to my eye every time.

My dad always told a story about Dyersburg, Tennessee, and him and his buddies in the 30's, saw a plane fly over town (rare sight) so they jumped on their old fixed up bikes and rode down to a dirt road near a landing strip outside of town, and bounced barefoot across a field of dandelions to the airstrip only to find the plane didn't land there. There was a small Mississippi tributary nearby with an old empty houseboat tied off on the edge of the shore line, so they all explored the boat and took turns jumping off into the water. After, drying off in the sun, they jogged back across the field back to their bikes, bouncing between patches of dandelions again, with bees hovering around the patches of the flowers. Dad said he was in the rear, when his barefoot came down on a snake. Said he took off like a rocket, passing everyone to the bikes on the side of the old dirt road. When he got there, bent over from being out of breath, said he couldn't even hardly see his feet, from all the weeds and dandelions stuck between all his toes. God bless that man. WW II combat Merchant Marine.

I think this song takes everyone back to that "one moment" in their childhood. For me, I'm about 11 or 12. My mom was teaching me to skip rocks in a small creek in between softball games. I fell in and had to pitch soaking wet. It was one of the best games I ever had. My coach told me i should be thrown in before all games. My mom has since passed and I would give just about anything to spend that day skipping rocks with her again.

I'd give anything to go back to that time. My father passed 3 years ago.

Same ❤ I don't normally comment on anything but omg. this song, I think it is just...I cry every time i hear it, it is so sad and at the same time so sweet. It reminds me of my own childhood growing up in a small SC town, and it also reminds me of my grandmother and listening to her stories of growing up on a little dirt farm in the middle of nowhere, dirt poor, during the great depression with her 8 brothers and sisters, and she was just full of nothing but good memories and funny stories and i loved hearing all of them. She said that they used to catch big ole "june bugs" and then tie a strjng around their leg and they bad a june bug kite for the day 😂 I miss her so much and treasure her stories like diamonds. She lost my Pop Pop when he was 67, they'd been together since the age of 13, and she wore his ring until the day she died at 94 yrs old. The last time i went to see her was 4 days before she died, sharp as a tack right to the very end. She was the last one of her 8 brothers and sisters left, bless her heart. She loved me more than anything in the world and frankly I am blessed to have had her as my grandma for 45 years of my life. She was a fighter, but even the best fighter's give out after so long and the last thing she said to me was "I'm so glad you came to see me today, but I was having the most wonderful dream when you walked in and woke me up, and I'm eager to get back to it! I daid what were you dreaming about grandma, tell me! She smiled and said "Me and Elmer (Pop) were kids again, & we were walking to the creek with our cane poles and a bucket of worms we'd dug up behind daddy's wood shed. And he reached out and took my hand and said I'm gonna marry you someday, u know. And i said, oh i can't wait for the day! And we walking hand in hand both sniling from ear to ear...and we were almost to the creek when I woke up. If you dont mind, i think I'll shut my eyes and get back to Elmer now, he's been waiting so long for me to join him, and i do miss him so... ❤ I said well don't keep him waiting then, and when u see him will u tell him that i love him? She said, oh he knows, and he loves you too, always has. I kissed her cheek and she went back to sleep smiling, and i just stood and watched her for what seemed forever, and then i whispered "Its okay to go now, I know how long you've waited to be with Pop Pop again. And one day I'll join y'all, won't it be fun! That's why i love this song so much its so sad and so so sweet too. ❤

What a story this song tells. Here is a man who was going through a really hard time in his life. He falls asleep and begins to dream about a place where pain was nonexistent and life was carefree. A moment that the cold weather and hunger he was facing seemed like a vacation. Then along comes someone and wakes him up from the relief from the pain he was experiencing. I can totally relate when he says I wish you just left me Alone because i was Almost Home. It would be like climbing that cliff just to get to the top only to fall back to where you started. Powerful powerful song if you really dissect it

Feeling nostalgic today. I remember when this wonderful song first came out and was played on the radio (not often enough, IMO) If I was driving, I'd always have to pull over because I couldn't see through all my tears. The heartfelt words and music immediately take me back to childhood summers in rural Kentucky; such a sweet and simple time. When it's my time to leave this life, I pray that God will grant me the gift of reliving those memories in my final moments, like he so perfectly sings about in this song. Craig Morgan, thank you so much for this precious song 💛

I had to pull over because I was crying uncontrollably. . It's one song that brings out the emotions that I rarely let out . But so many moments in that song was taken out of my life . 3 VC en down to falling to sleep in the cold . Deer hunting with my brother . He saved my life because I'd froze to death . Miss my brother Ray so much .

Awe man you got me crying now lol every time I hear this song I hold back tears when he says “I saw daddy loading up the truck, cane poles in the tailgate, bobbers blowing in the wind, since July of 55 that’s as close as I’ve been.” I lost my dad December 14th, 2019. Life has been very bleak without him here.

@@skinnyslims5327 It’s hard to remember who you are and what you’re capable of right after they go ahead of us. When I looked at my daddy, I saw the man that I could be, something I never saw in a mirror. It’s difficult not to have him here as a mentor. But his lessons are like a tree. It was a seedling back then, but now it has grown deep roots, and I am beginning to see him in me. That’s how I know im doing something right. In time, the pain will become strength, and slowly, you will remember what you’ve been told, and you’ll feel closer and closer to him as you grow. My dad always wanted more for me, but I’d be happy with being the man he is.

In 1979 I was a Police Officer in St. Louis area I got a call of man sleeping in Dumpster. The guy had jump suit on and was covered in trash. Later in my career at another Department had another homeless man in small stone shelter dead winter it was 10 Degrees. Wearing six pairs of pants. I tried to help both. With no luck. Later when Craig Morgan wrote this incredible song I always reflect on these two guys. I handled many homeless people it’s sad but their way of life

Hello Craig.. I remember when this came out years ago.. Whenever I hear this song, it never fails.. Tears start flowing yet I sing out loud, like nobody's listening.. Try crying through tears and a stuffed up nose.. I always have the same reaction to this song, no matter where I am.. I watched the video with yourself and Jelly Roll right before this, and that brought tears.. Scrolled down and saw this, had to listen again.. More tears, more singing.. Thank you Craig..

Heard this song a time or two, and just sat and really listened to it after having it in my head all day. I balled like a baby , I grew up surrounded by cotton wood trees and honey bees, memories of my grandfather and loosing my mother to cancer, i cried , god bless this song and Craig Morgan..

This song is like drifting hard into a turn, I HIT THE WALL, EVERY TIME :'--/ /// Powerful lyrics invoke deep nostalgia. While my family had many "nuances," there WAS a lot to Love, and NOW a lot to miss.

I lost my daddy almost a year ago he told me about his life, back when franklin was just a little old town. He always fussed at me for jumpin off the rope swing, into the harpth. We would drive our car, out carter's creek pk towards the country...looking for box turtles to keep for awhile, or to catch lightning bugs in a jar overnight. For some reason I can't find these things anymore, for my kids.. but we still drive, with the windows down and appreciate good music..that'll never change.

Was my go to song when Katrina had done a number on us in south La …I was driving back and forth from Al to La every other day it seemed with my 3 dogs all have passed and if I could go back to a time in my life when those three, my girls, were on the beach… such good memories which is what this song reminds me of…thank you Craig Morgan❤️👍🏻

My late grandfather was an absolute hero to me. He taught us about hard work and how to be respectful in the world. In the summers, he would be cutting hay in the field and we would climb up in a big tree and jump into the creek over and over til we were worn plum out. This song brings back that memory every time I hear it. I really appreciate this song in ways I can't put into words. Thanks man, what a song!

OMG, this song. I cry every time I think about it, let alone hear it. I'm not even a country music fan. Plus, I think of it every single time I see a homeless person, which is every day, since I live in Phoenix and I am a nurse. It reminds me, to be kind and think kindly. This person, no matter what they look (or smell) like, was probably someone's beautiful little boy or girl at one time and they always have departed family, angels and guides, who love them and cannot wait for them to come home to them. Peace

My dads best friend owned a hardware store in the early 70s, in a town with a population of about 1500, I still see the cane poles outside for sale with the bobbers blowing in the wind, and I still smell mamas supper on the stove, and the excitement of my dad telling me to grab my pole, we were headed fishing after he got off work, me and my best friend climbing out of trees deer hunting, unless youve lived it, you cant understand it.

I saw Craig Morgan with Alan Jackson, Little Big Town and Keith Anderson back in 2007 at Country Fest @ Cadott, WI. Powerful performance, and worth every dime that we paid for the tickets. Thank you, Craig.

Mr. Morgan, This was my son's favorite song. My son passed away in 2011. I just saw your new song on Kelley Clarkson's show (just random surfing). You are correct. Seems like it just happened even though it's been 9 years. My condolences, and my prayers. It's a club none of want to be members of. Much peace to you and thank you so much!

I was watching Deep Waters when I noticed this song in the credits. My brother-in-law past 1/25/23 (M. Ake) He loved this song and my sister shared the details of why he loved the song so much. Of course it was played at his funeral. I pray for all the families and people in the comments. This life is not easy, but with God, it is worth living. God Bless you all.

I love this, takes me back to when I was very young. Riding my bike, with my sister, at that time she was my sister. I ran from honey bees, and going into Stavers dam. I would be fishing that lake. What a young, joyful life we had back then.❤ Sometimes
