Somewhere along the line I read that excessive shoulder tilt encouraged a reverse pivot and the shoulder turn needs to be as level as possible. I worked toward that and it ruined my swing for ages. I'm working toward getting more tilt again and getting better strikes. There's lot of horrible advice in golf which is why you need to be selective who you listen to. Craig is obviously one of the better ones.

Thanks for this, very useful. For me, the illustrations of the right forearm angles in the downswing were the most valuable pointers. I will be 82 in June, have been playing for 60+ years, but am still learning how to improve the swing. That's the attraction of golf. You can play it all your life, and you will never perfect it and will always have something to learn and work on. Thanks to a lot of excellent instruction on KZfaq and work with the pro at my range I have been able to incorporate some of the things these women players do already, I can keep my elbows together on the backswing, which brings the right (trail) forearm into a vertical position with the right wrist very much in extension (in the old days instructors referred to this as thinking of a waiter holding a tray up with one hand) and right wrist in flexion (bowed). Thanks to Sean and Mike at AMG I have learned to initiate the downswing by lowering the right elbow down toward the belt, which you see here. I have also focused on keeping my left wrist in flexion (bowed) as shown here when making contact. I have also been working on shifting my weight to the left onto my left leg and letting the right or trail knee bend and come up to the left knee as I turn and getting my right foot more up on the toe (not so easy for an old guy) as these women are doing and all pros do. The one key thing that was missing was what you point out that they do: bringing the right forearm and hand down low and straightening that arm to get the 45 degree angle you illustrate. I have just begun to transition from the 120 gram stiff Rifle Lite shafts in my forged blades to a lighter shaft, overdue at my age and swing speed, and had an 87.5 gram stiff Nippon NS Pro Zelos 8 shaft put into an identical 7 iron head. Getting used to that club at the range today I focused hard on your pointers, keeping my elbows together in the backswing and then bringing the right forearm down low and close to my knees and straightening it as you explain these women do. It made a huge improvement. Higher launch and peak, straighter shot, more distance. So thank you. I have said for years, and not just in jest, that I wish I could play like a woman, referring to these LPGA stars. Last year I modified that to wish I could play like a teenage girl after watching the finals of the junior girls championship where the two finalists, ages 14 and 15, both hit 240-245 yard drives on a reachable par 4 across a lake on to a shelf green on a hill surrounded by bunkers. A lot of good male golfers would have opted for the bail out route to the left and hit a wedge second shot.

I think side bending of the spine starting as the hips reach 45° open and shoulders come back parallel plays and important role in the golf swing. It causes the trail elbow to tuck into the side and drops the hands in a circular motion just as the club shaft cocked in the wrists comes back horizontal with the ground, freeing it to be pulled down by gravity and forward by momentum. It is also the point where gravity acts on the mass of the lead arm which has been pulled connected to the chest in the backswing and start of the downswing when hip turn pulls shoulders and lead arm around the feet in a circle. The side bend action changes to force vector of the mass in the lead arm causing it to fly off towards the target instead of continuing around the feet. The accelerating mass of the released lead arm pulls the trail arm straight which causes the club head to accelerate around the hands. Allowing the club force to pull the trail arm straight causes the lead arm to fold elbow down, mirroring the action of the trail arm in the backswing and allowing the golfer to stay in balance, critical for accurate ball striking. In a swing without side bend the mass of the lead arm swings around the feet instead of towards target, bends at the elbow and chicken wings with a resulting loss in balance.

Watching both the PGA and the LPGA it would seem to the eye that pin positions on the LPGA are set in much easier and open places on the greens. There are very few pin placements that LPGA players cannot go for. Could this affect the resulting data concerning proximity to the pin? I did enjoy your lesson regarding the arm and elbow positions and using the phone was a great visual. The Hanger swing aid looks great, but that is some expensive piece of plastic!

Haha, facts are facts mate. I suppose it's in men's tribal nature to get defensive when they hear that women are performing better, but they are just playing better :) Sounds like that might be a big bitter pill for you to swallow but I'm okay with it. I'd like to think it has more to do with their finesse and not trying to demolish the ball. If you talk to any PGA tour pro they will tell you that this game is won with consistent clutch 125-150 yard strikes, and the ladies are just slaying it there. This is why they are working to the top:) They are focusing on the most important things.
@CraigHansonGolf

The more spin the straighter the ball flys. Wedges generate more spin than 7 irons and wedges go straighter than 7 irons . Dont forget ladies are also hitting longer clubs in from these distances. I think men can’t handle the idea that women might be better at something

@WorldClassGolf - Craig Hanson & Dr. Rob Neal haha I hadn't seen the data until now but what I knew when I watched them play is those 125-150 shots they always hit gimme's which I have been trying to do my whole bloody life. I heard one gal on the lpga that always says the same thing. "I'm going to be playing "boring", but consistent golf. She always won. Basically she's never trying to crush a 300 yard drive. She'll make sure she doesn't lose the fairway and because of that never end up in bogey land. She got me watching lpga more than the pga. Nelly Korda is just unreal! She's such a phenomenal player and now there is this new kid and I'm not being cheeky, she is like 17 years old. She gained headlines for driving 275 yard drives at the age if 16. Her last name is chiardzi or something close to it, but she's undoubtedly going to run things soon. I'm actually very excited to hear this about women. We all know that LPGA just doesn't pull the same size crowds as PGA which probably means less money, endorsement deals etc... Its likely that the LPGA gets more love than the WNBA but that's not saying much. This is the one game that brute strength isn't typically the deciding factor, so I think that they will only get more impressive with time.

Less clubhead speed means less sidespin. If Minjee Lee hits an approach shot off-center the ball will end up on the edge of the green. If Bryson DeChambeau hits an approach shot off-center the ball will end up in the gallery. With that said, the ladies have MUCH better mechanics than the men in general.

Sometimes after watching an LPGA tournament round on TV I'll go to the driving range with those images imprinted in mind. Also the tempo embedded in my arms and hands. Granted I don't have clubs that are customized to me, my build, etc. but just using the images these gals provide gives me better distance and accuracy... and then I try to imprint that into my own muscle memory. I love the fact that the ladies have developed to the skill levels we are witness to today. These days, to say that someone hits a golf ball like a girl would be a high compliment indeed.

@@mikebarnard2689 if greens are softer and slower by 1-2 feet, and pin placements are less challenging on one tour, then do you think stats between tours are suitable for comparison? Nobody is doubting Minjee Lee's consistency, but the stats do not give a clear indication of how she would perform on the PGA course setups. If she had to carry a bunker at 160 to a tight pin on a hard green with a 6 iron in hand, while Jon Rahm is hitting hard wedge, generating almost double the spin rate and landing the ball with a significantly steeper decent angle, who do you think will achieve better results on average? Also, if pin placements are more severe on one tour, then players will not aim at them and their stats will reflect this. Pros play the percentages and typically aim to leave themselves below the pin and on the opposite side from the greatest danger. It's not very often that they have the green light to take dead aim. Just look up Scott Fawcett and his company Decade Golf. I think it is perhaps you that may not understand what the other commenter is stating. Perhaps you want to believe that she is better and therefore intentionally ignore the critical factors that would influence the results.

Interesting video...but i have my own feeling on why females are more accurate: they don't swing as hard; they don't carry that male ego gene of having to kill the ball...why do tour players have to force a PW 150 yards vs hitting a smooth 8 or 9 for control, the way the ladies do? Hogan often would hit an easy 8 to a 140 yard pin...as did Nudson...which is why there were better ball strikers than present day PGA players.
