I love the color combination. goes with the blue carpet great. I was restoring a 14 ft Starcraft one time and asked an old timer that rebuilt boats and asked him about primer. He said he had never used it, that he only applies apple cider vinegar and let it set for a while and rinse. The acid in the vinegar etched the aluminum so the paint would adhere. That was 25 years ago and the paint is still holding good. You should not have any problems since you used the wire brush to remove the paint and that was probably enough. Great looking boat!

Rustoleum makes Aluminum Primer in a rattle can. Works very well, leaves a great surface to paint over. Fairly cheap, maybe $6 can. Your dad had it right with the glue. Glad to see you listening to him. Nice video, thanks for posting!

Most newer pontoon boats have plastic spacers to lift the side rails allowing for easier drainage so the carpet stays dryer. Might be worth adding

Good call on all your paint decisions. I was a little worried about the stripper interacting with the aluminum. But worked out OK. I painted an aluminum center console on a work boat I had with flat grey Krylon primer (planed to paint color later, never did, I liked the grey look) That thin coat of Krylon primer lasted 20 years.

The only value it has Is as long as he used marina board for the decking and not pressure treated. Plus you use a glue on decking before placing the carpet protection deck even longer.

I added nylon washers under the fence to keep the fence up off the carpet so the carpet could dry and water would not stand in the corner if the boat got rained on when not covered. I found my boat would hold a considerable amount of water in the corner if left with the bow lower than the back deck on uneven ground after replacing the carpet.

To clean your hardware...if it is stainless (if not stainless...toss it and get stainless) get a gallon of muratic acid...the stuff they put in swimming pools pour some in a bucket (take caution of the fumes) and toss in the hardware. Leave it in there for about 30 minutes then get the water hose and fill up the bucket with water to delute the acid. When the bucket fills up, dump it all out, but not near your grass or plants. Your hardware will look like it is chromed.

I liked your reasoning for not treating the underside of the plywood, but I think I would have treated the bolt holes for the transom. It's an area that gets wet very easily, and drys slowly inside of the holes. Fortunately, that piece is easy to replace, if it rots out. Anyhow, good video! Cheers!

Next time if you take a cardboard box and poke the bolts through it you can label each bolt or set of bolts to know where they go during reassembly.

If it wasn't stupidly expensive and custom, I'd say install on that deck's real estate in the front mid a marine grade recliner or two that has enough room to swivel. So what if it destroys the available open space at the front? Mom and dad need recliners on that body hauler barge. The kids and other relatives can fit on the other seats like in compact cars, tight and cramped. I guess the next best cheapest thing is design the layout so you can put outdoor patio recliner with padding on the deck and fabricate fasteners to bolt and unbolt it down.

nice job, well done.... I have a 2002 16' pontoon. I should be thinking about redoing the deck on it and some of the seat arms are rotten as well. Any reason why you didn't put that red paint on the bottom? Think your keeping the center console in the same spot, and all the seats or you moving stuff around?

Soda blast the pontoons. Quick and well worth the money.
@johnramirez59965 жыл бұрын
You can soda blast. But even at factory when having scratched a tube. We used sandpaper and rubbing compound or like sos pad. Certain pad will remove build up with completely scratching tubes and make them shinny again along with compound. No different than polishing rims or restoring aluminum rims on vehicle.
@johnramirez59965 жыл бұрын
Without scratching tubes. Sorry
@-Viceroy-5 жыл бұрын
@@johnramirez5996 Yep. Aluminium is a tricky material. For removing calcium etc. build up, i have found soda blasting to be a good solution for soft metal like aluminium. Even for paint removal of wood it's pretty damn good

Hey Brandon … big fan!! I decided to strip(airplane stripper) and sand down the lower end of outboard to the bare aluminum. Now I’m at a crossroads of what to do. I’ve read about self etching primers. First wipe down with acetone or 50/50 white vinegar/water … then apply the self etching primary, than another base primer followed by a final coat (Alkyd Enamel?). I’ve also read about using the following procedure: Alumiprep, Alodine, Zinc Chromate, than primer then final coat (don’t like these toxic chemicals). I don’t have any spray eqpt. Any help would be very appreciated!! Bill
@BrandonsGarage5 жыл бұрын
Cleaning with acetone is good practice, but cleaning it with water will suffice. Sand/scuff it up a little ,cleaning with acetone, primer it, and paint. Don't need to clear, as it'll wear off the lower in 2 uses anyway. I've used Rustoleum Automotive primer on an bare outboard before, with no issues 4 years later. If you want to get fancy, get the Zinc Phosphate Primer, otherwise you don't need to over think it.

@claycam675 жыл бұрын
It did on mine. There was mud ingrained into the aluminum from being parked on the shore, and it totally removed it. This is literally a spray on and rinse off in 10 mins. It’s a little expensive, but it works! Good job on the boat so far.

So I've been preparing to spruce up my pontoon, but as research about painting the fence panels, every auto painter says that if you have bare aluminum, you absolutely have to use XIM self-etching primer before paint to promote adhesion. Hows that paint holding up now? Please share your experience with us!
@BrandonsGarage4 жыл бұрын
Its fine, Through the wind, sun, rain, and sand storms for almost a year, it still looks as though It was just painted. However, I agree, with my outboards I've always been instructed to primer with the fancy stuff first, and always have. After this pontoon, I haven't noticed a difference in adhesion.
