Unfortunately, sometimes cranes tip over. Finding the load required to tip a crane is a basic problem in statics. I show you how to set up and solve a tipping problem along with some pictures of cranes to make the point.

This video shows how to set up a statics problem of a rigid body tipping over using moments by setting the moment of the rear wheel to zero which signifies the point at which the crane will lift off the ground.

Neat stuff, its cool how you take your time to go over every aspect of the diagram... however, and I may be jumping the gun here, but for me, doing so seems to over-complicate the problem unnecessarily... I simply take a look at the diagram and almost visualize a very simple see-saw image... M = F x D... as long as moment on one side equals moment (in opposite direction on other side) are equal... that is the point where equilibrium is maintained, and in the case of Statics here, the tipping point of the crane... That said, I'm still new to this subject, and am really enjoying your videos, looking forward to seeing what the later topics hold :) Thank you!

If you start adding more ballast you'd bend ether the jib or more likely the outriggers...I stick with the load charts..they' save a lot of time and accidents lol

Thank you for the video.Like this moment hits in the middle. What i want iswhen outriggers dimensions 4mx2m and bom is at 26,5 degree which is above a outrigger. Like this how can we calculate forces of 4 outriggers? Can you help sir?

I may be asking a question that has already been asked but why are we subtracting the forces from the weight and the crane's center of gravity when they are both pointing in the same direction?
@user-xd1gk8jc4f5 ай бұрын
even though my English is not that good I will do my best , the reason is because both forces are trying to rotate the crane in opposite directions on the front foot

It so useful this video and easy explanation but My question is, why you are not including the crane’s arm weight on the free body diagram ?
@purdueMET Жыл бұрын
I assumed that the arm was light compared to the weight. But, it's not hard to add in the weight of the arm. Just add another downward force at the center of mass of the arm :-)

I have a rear mount 1996 year 1295 national crane, rear mount I have owned for 10 years, any reason not to "I make" counter weight just for ease of mind. I think 500 lbs. or so. Any thoughts on this. Thank you.
@2011TRUTH5 жыл бұрын
clyde berry fairly bad idea. Could result in possible loss of backward stability. (Most particularly in high boom angle situations, especially with no load.) You would get about the same amount of leverage by simply lifting over the rear. (Engine block, cab etc). It is possible to add counter weight/weights but you must get it approved in writing from the manufacturer.

How summation of B gone zero?
@gbelai7 ай бұрын
Thanks for putting this together. If the problem showed 4 outriggers instead of 2, to solve a similar problem, would you simplify the problem as how you solved it in this video? Or would you need to build a 3 dimensional free body diagram to compute the unknowns?
@gbelai7 ай бұрын
Asking this because I'm looking at a problem with 3d diagram depicting all 4 outriggers, but the solution is completed assuming 2 reactions and solved accordingly? I'm curious if that is the way to go with such crane problems. Thanks in advance.

When you take a moment about ( B ) why neglect the reaction in ( A )
@michaelacheampong28695 жыл бұрын
He is determining the weight at which the crane begins to tip over when there are no counterweights at A the crane has to rely on its self weight to carry the load.So the tipping over threshold the force is O there he has to workout the others.In real the the counter weight are there supporting the crane so it can carry much more weight.

This video may encourage an incompetent person to use the tipping capacity as the maximum load not to exceed. Where in reality the crane is already overloaded just before the calculated tipping capacity, I.e,, when the combined CoG of the crane upper and lower works, the boom and load is on the fulcrum point - the outrigger or end of crawler track. Stick to the load chart.

What's if the weight is below the ground base of the crane (like if the crane is lifting a boat from the water?) the center of mass moves...
@mahmoudsalem42885 жыл бұрын
so, how do you know that the center of mass is in the middle? are all cranes designed to have the C.G in the middle?
@ticheroi2 жыл бұрын
that's assumed by definition of the problem. IRL you weigh a crane on 3, 4 or more weights and calculate the actual c.g. When designing a crane you decide for yourself where cg should be.
@tutstorial84745 жыл бұрын
I think the mass of the boom should be taken into account.

Thank you for your videos they are very helpful but I have a question. Why was the weight "w" multiplied by the distance 16m instead of 24m? (in the moment of b equation)
@adamukoghenemona80966 жыл бұрын
His Analysis assumes what weight W will cause a tipping, hence FA is zero,the tipping occurs at B (the Fulcrum) and not at A.

@adamukoghenemona80966 жыл бұрын
The Hydraulic Arm was left in the FBD because the static analysis presents a conservative case...

Sir, i saw this video carefully, its been very helpful for me but one thing i cant understand properly why you put the value zero of reaction force in point A, what is the reason ?
@subhasissinharoy65455 жыл бұрын
your kind reply highly appreciated.
@hamzahsabah21504 жыл бұрын
Because he wants to find the critical cared weight, so in this case there will be uplift which makes no reaction at the point A. it is just like putting pen on your finger and trying to keep it save (I hope the example is clear).
