As promised some welding footage.
Short but intense ;) This is about as interesting as I could make a welding video.
Hope you enjoy it, I definitely enjoyed editing it :) There's some more welding stuff coming up, in the usual format..
Check out my Instagram at / hollaendaren
Spoiler alert, Instagram is going to be a bit ahead of the videos.

You have to be a very good and talented welder to do such a challenge. Problem: 2 stroke with small engin will probably disappear completely in Europe due to EU regulation against pollution. Only 2 stroke engin with fuel injection and catalytic exhaust with be authorized to run. This is valid for a lot of small engin like moped, lawn mower, boat or saw. Alternatively 4 stroke engin or electric can replace all of them and they are already produced by major companies.

I see the welding now!. Over the yrs ive welded tons of alum, all types for all applications. Ive had very good luck peening the welds to stop the shrink cracks and normalize the metal a little. Preheating is a must, 400deg is a good start. They also make a good cast alum filler, not just the 6061. That tends to crack a lot.. Hope its all going well!.
@Hollaendaren
@Hollaendaren 5 жыл бұрын
I heated the case to a bit over 400F before I started welding. Or about 2½ hours on the stove :) I also heated it for a couple of hours more after I finished welding and then let it cool down and sit for a week before I touched it. Used 4043 filler which seems a lot less crack prone than 5356.

Making me proud to originally come from Holland (Den Haagen 1666, part of city still known to my surname 😁). Wanted to do this couple of years ago but never found time so l am totally enjoying your detailed and precise method. Born in 1953 l do not believe to still pull this off though so l wish you all the best and l just know it will be a success. Can't wait for your first start up. Greetings from South Africa.

always use filler on both sides when welding. spread the welding from different sides of the cases to keep the warping down. on the inside you can sand the case smooth with a carbide cutter then a sanding drum. on the outside leave alone and add some devcon to the iside of the ribbs to give strength to the cases like the stroker yamaha banshee hill sand draggers do. awsome work!

I'm not sure how good it was to weld, there was so much junk in there! I actually gave a friend who is a lot better welder than me some cut offs to test on in the hope that he might want to weld it for me, but he wanted nothing to do with it after testing ;) so I had to bite the bullet and try to do it myself. Looks like it worked out OK though, I'm fairly confident it's not going to fall apart at least :)

@Hollaendaren
@Hollaendaren 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for asking :) Some updates but nothing major. I am extremely busy with my new one lunger chassis and that's taking way more time than I anticipated. But there's a slight change of plans regarding the volume, I decided if I'm going to build a crank pretty much from scratch I might as well make it a stroker from the get go. I bought a bunch of 64 mm cranks that hopefully will be usable. I'll try and post an update video soon!

galieric I’ve got a couple really nice Polaris 1050 jet skis that I’ve wanted to make into a straight 6 for some time now. Maybe even stick it back in a jet ski when it’s done. I don’t think I’d cut the cases though. Prob just make a jack shaft in between the two. I can only imagine what a 2100 cc two stroke would be like!!!
