In this episode we'll be testing the Crankshaft Position Sensor REF (reference) - trouble code P1335. This sensor detects the Top Dead Center 120 degrees signal. The sensor consists of a permanent magnet, core and coil. When the engine is running, the gap between the sensor and the crankshaft pulley will periodically change. This change causes voltage signal in the sensor coil to change. The ECM receives the voltage and detects the TDC 120 degrees signal.

Code P1335 is caused by the following:
- 120 degrees signal is not entered to the ECM during engine running.
- 120 degrees signal is not entered to the ECM for the first few seconds during engine cranking.
- 120 degrees signal cycle excessively changes during engine running.
Areas to look at:
- Crankshaft position sensor harness connector
- Crankshaft position sensor
- Starter motor and/or starting system.
As stated in the video, use Google Images, Google web search along with car specific websites to find diagrams, ohms/resistance readings, etc. for your specific vehicle. This vehicle is a '97 Nissan Maxima.

Great production! My 2001 Infiniti I30 has been idling rough. The crankshaft pulley went bad and the belt ripped the OEM sensor apart. I replaced everything and used a high quality aftermarket Sensor. The car has never started or idled the same since and seems to be getting worse over time. I'm thinking the sensor wasn't so high end. Do you think the Sensor could be the culprit? I am not sure of symptoms other than not starting. Every once in a while, the engine skips a beat but no codes are thrown. Just curious to what the Pros thought as this is pretty much the same car in the video.

Had a situation where, over a cold, moist night, the sensor wires, at the connector, would have condensation & would cause a crank-no start. The 2 wires TO the sensor, itself, were angled up so that any condensation, on the wires, would flow downhill TO the connector as well. Jeebus! I 'rerouted' the harness so that it was 'level'. I cleaned the sensor male wires & the connector itself with switch cleaner. I then injected silicone grease into the wire-connector, so that, when I inserted it INTO the sensor itself, it compressed & squeezed out excess and formed a moisture (& dirt) barrier. The problem has NOT occurred (over several rainy or damp/foggy nights) when I go to start the car first thing in the morning. Yahoo!

whats up buddy i have a 97 nissan maxima and im getting no crank and no start response i replaced the starter and and the battery,could the crankshaft position sensor cause this issue, i was thinking the factory alarm is causing the car not to crank i went over the wires they were not in bad shape but i did realize the wire was cut and respliced (ref sensor wires) so my next step was going to be run a ground from the tranny mount

Hi all! To my knowledge most engines use two types of Crankshaft sensors. 1. Inductive (magnetic) which are with one or two pins on the socket and which are capable of producing an electrical impulse without being supplied. 2. Those of hall-effect type that have 3 or 4 pins on the socket and that generate a digital pulse (square wave) provided they are supplied with a specific electrical current. Regardless of the type of Crankshaft sensor when measuring directly on the sensor with the multimeter, any type of good (not flawed) Crankshaft sensor must have a resistance of X ohms? I ask for your help in this problem because I am facing the following situation. My Crankshaft sensor no longer functional. I removed it from the engine and measured it with the digital multimeter directly on the pins. No resistance. I thought it was burnt (defective) and I bought an identical original one. When I received the sensor, before mounting it I tried to check it. Same thing. It has no resistance whatever the configuration of the measured pins. 1 with 2, 1 with 3, 3 with 1, etc. Nothing, no resistance in ohms, kohmi, although this sensor is new.. My question is: Regardless of the type of sensor crankshaft as long as it is operational (good) when directly measuring it with the multimeter must it have a certain value? My sensor type is a Mitsubishi ME203180 and as I reported above. Neither the new nor the old multimeter measurements indicate anything. Obviously the scale of the multimeter is selected correctly. Is it possible to be a perfectly operational sensor and not indicate any resistance when measuring with the multimeter? Thank you in advance!

It's located under the air duct. Try searching via google images. If you have trouble finding the sensors (I believe your vehicle has two of them..if I remember correctly) shoot me a message via facebook.

CarsNToys Thanks for the reply. I replaced the crankshaft sensor, started the car the engine light went out then came back on like 30mins later. What could be the issue, do you have to clear the code after repairing?
@CarsNToys
@CarsNToys 7 жыл бұрын
You generally have to erase the code. However, the car's computer will turn off the check engine light eventually if everything has been repaired. You're getting p1335 or a p4xx code?

can you make a video on how to replace the harness for this sensor? after testing it, im 100% its dead and its also the reason my car wont start.

The next time I come across a vehicle that's about to be junked I'll certainly show. But in the meantime, the easiest way is removing the old harness and splice in a new one via soldering. You can find harnesses on ebay. Also try a local junkyard if you have one.

You most likely have a break in the wiring. There's a tool you can purchase that can help find the breakage. Check out Scotty Kilmer's page and search for finding electrical problems.
