Your right but some welding rods are a harder steel than others and would-be better for this. I can't think what the word is but it's like an alloy with higher carbon content, makes it harder but more brittle and more likely to snap or crack than shear or stretch just like a bolt should be.

Yep, you never weld to shafts ever if you want good life out of it. For emergency if no replacement is available there is no option then do it but order new shaft. I have done a couple of 3-6MW electro motors for ships when there was a bearing failure and had the shipyard weld up and machine to specs of bearing area. But next repair period always replaced the shaft. Cracks were always starting to show.

@@rydermiller1782 this is less about the chemistry of the metal and more about the hardening process. To properly hard steel it need to be heated evenly to a certain temperature then quenched. This welding heats very uneven and then cools slowly, annealing the metal making it less hard and less brittle, so it will shear rather than shatter.

The best way to fix that is throw it in the scrap and get a new one.

Aha. Now try tat if parts are unavailable or are too expensive for the locals to buy new.

@@mark675 They are not case hardened, just heat treated. I have parted off crank ends and cut new key ways when using different ignition systems (various race engine applications). However, you do need carbide cutters which are very pricey.

@@hztn именно так сперва процтись болгаркой по ротору зачистив от ржи далее сваркой приварить ротор к коленвалу и вуаля- 99% людей с такой проблеммой решение имеющих сварочник пысы Купил ка то раз с кутр к котрому приварили вметсо кикстартера шатун от велика с педалью) Нашим людям только дай в руки сварочник.... И ладно бы риварили так они забыли пружину возвратную сперва поставить)
