This engine rebuild was going so well, and then I came to adjusting the tappets and suddenly I'm taking the engine apart again........... this rebuild took a few reverse steps, head off again.
Got to machine the rocker shaft pedestals to compensate for the decompression plate.
Luckily I have a friend who has a milling machine and is an excellent machinist, love it when a plan comes together. Also is it was easy anybody could do it....:)
There is some spanner turning in this video which pushes out the timing a bit. The interesting bit is the last segment unfortunately, didn't fit with the timeline being first..

Aren’t you better off acquiring longer pushrods to not affect the valve train geometry? As that is compensating properly for the raised head only?

Hi John, Interesting, there is a bit more to this. So I considered a few things, one was longer tappet / rocker adjustment screws, apparently there are longer screws used in a Wolseley 1500 engine however I had heard that having the extra thread protruding out at the bottom made the screw more prone to snapping off under the rocker, this seemed logical so I gave that away. I considered sleeving the pushrods and extending the length by 2mm, tig welding was the method of welding the sleeves, however the heat affected zone of the weld could soften / weaken the pushrod and cause it to either deform or break, neither was desirable. Putting a 2mm shim in the cam follower was another option, however the least number of loose parts you have floating around in an engine the better. I contacted the supplier of the supercharger and he advised me that the best way out of this issue is to skim the rocker posts something he has done himself without any problems. The gent supplying these kits is a bit of a racing engine guru so I have no doubt that what he has suggested with work, a lot better than some of the fixes I thought about. To my way of thinking shortening the rocker posts will put the tappet ball back at the right angle to the pushrod, the only change would be the rocker to the top of the valve, even then I would have thought the change would be minimal. It is an interesting suggestion John and I'll see what things look like when I have made the change, I have a standard engine as you might have seen in the video, when I rebuild that one I'll see if I can measure anything to confirm or deny what you are talking about. Very interesting, thank you John., also think you are a subscriber, I thank you for that as well John the support is appreciated.

@@CrapToCream There’s certainly a lot of variables in this topic, and certainly may all be part of the theoretical optimum, versus what is certainly perfectly acceptable. Glad you’re at least considering all the choices and learning some things at the same time. That’s all part of the journey. Keep up the good work and enjoy the project!

What compression ratio are you chasing and what pressure are you looking for from the charger?

Hi Pat, I'm not chasing any particular compression ratio, this is one of many retirement projects, a learning curve, an experience in my more mature years, I suspect the old MG will perform a bit better, use more fuel, however not to a point that the engine blows up, if it does that'll be another project. Pressure , I would think around 5 to 7 psi, that is purely guess work, i'll let you know when I fire her up. It is something a bit "Aldi", "good different". I've not seen any MG's in the shows I've been to around here that has one of these VMax superchargers fitted so it is something a bit different. Don't drink, don't smoke and I have a great wife who supports me playing around with MG's. Plus if I didn't do this YT thing which I have now really started to enjoy we would never of had this "conversation".

@@CrapToCream that’s great and your right about conversation starters. I have a MG Magnette with a 5 bearing 1800 in it. It is t on the road as I have to do the sills on it, but the engine has a small turbo on it producing about 5psi and I can confirm it really livens it up, without grenadine the engine. I do t have a decomp plate, but the head has had a bit of work to reduce the compression ratio a small amount. Haven’t had any issues with detonation so I think your combo will be awesome.
