My favorite part of this will always be that Alex decided it was better to pay 2 mana for Negate than pay the 1 mana to counter Daze.

Alex paid a minimum of 3 Life, 3 Exiled Blue Cards, and 3UUUUUU, or a max of 12UUUUUUUUUUUU for Storm Crow. He cast 9 spells. James paid a minimum of 1 Bounced Island, 3 Life, 3 Exiled Blue Cards, and 1UU or a max of 11UUUUUUUUU. If Pact resolved, it would have been 14UUUUUUUUUUU. He cast 8 Spells. Seems fair for a card that says "Wins the Game."

1: Pact of Negation was countered. 2: Unsummon is an instant, so he could have Unsummoned in response to the trigger.
@Griwes5 жыл бұрын
SuneEnough it almost surely wasn't countered; Alex would've countered something below it after the Pact, so that the trigger still happens. That's just how counterspell wars go, man :P
@Griwes5 жыл бұрын
SuneEnough also couldn't be in response, because he said "untap, draw" before casting Unsummon.

Looking back at this, in this one instance, they played over $700 worth of cards just using Force of Will.
@mikebell97599 жыл бұрын
Because alex didnt put down a card on the last force of will, i like to think that he was trying to actually use the force of his own will to counter the unsummon. Which makes the end even better.

waffacone Actually depending on targets it could've resolved. If the pact was fired at a counterspell A, force could counter the same spell counterspell A was targeting. Though that would just mean that people were counterspelling badly
@WindyDelcarlo9 жыл бұрын
Shethwind Actually, it's probably not terrible to let your opponent's pact resolve and just counter the original spell. I'd love to have just brought in a Counterflux and said "Screw this stack".
@Shethwind9 жыл бұрын
A counterflux would counter the pact. Also, what I'm saying is, when you decide to counter-war over a spell, you typically point all spells that can target the original spell, at the original spell. For reasons.

@crafter13009 жыл бұрын
I love how alex could have just payed for daze and it would have cost him less than the negate he cast on it. And that he cast swan song, which would have given james a swan which is technically larger (not better, you can't pitch the swan to force of will) than storm crow.
@FlashPlayerGames9 жыл бұрын
oh hey, I didn't know you guys were at the vintage tournament too XD
@crafter13009 жыл бұрын
Also the pact didn't resolve did it, so james wouldn't have to pay for it anyway. Right?
@Deimir9 жыл бұрын
Think you're right. The only spells that resolved on Alex's turn were Storm Crow and Remand.
@jonathantang95169 жыл бұрын
By the default targeting assumptions the spells which resolved would be all of Alex's counterspells and Storm Crow (by default you're targeting the object closest to the top of the stack). There is a way in which James' counters could have resolved, but it wasn't specified so you have to assume the default.
@theawesomeleprechaun8 жыл бұрын
Wait a minute, James' force of will was remanded so he had it in his hand to counter Alex's.

The stack. He didn't get the card back until after it resolved and could no longer be played.

@CSDragon8 жыл бұрын

It's only 9 mana on Alex's side (Negate, Counterspell, Remand, Storm Crow, Swan Song) and 3 on James's (Daze is free, Mana Leak, Spell Snare). Not actually that difficult
@TRP_Samich8 жыл бұрын
All I got out of this was he didn't pay for his pact upkeep.
@modernminded54668 жыл бұрын
+IamYourSamich - Didn't it get countered??
@maelstrom1978 жыл бұрын
Yeah, it got countered. The upkeep cost is a triggered ability. When Alex FoWed the Pact, the Pact never resolved and means that James doesn't have to pay the upkeep cost. That's why if, for example, Alex cast Storm Crow, James Pacted it, then Alex countered it with, say, Counterspell, James would be better off casting a second Pact targeting the Storm Crow, because if he countered the Counterspell, his original Pact would also resolve and he would have to pay 6UUUU in his next upkeep.

@kinosmead43548 жыл бұрын
You get card ADVANTAGE by not countering. Just know that they used a spell that was entirely unnecessary
@dragonbretheren9 жыл бұрын
Technically, Alex could have had his first Force of Will target any of James' prior counter spells, still achieving the same end effect, but allowing the Pact of Negation to resolve countering his Swan Song, thereby forcing James to still pay the Pact cost.
@jonathantang95169 жыл бұрын
And technically James could have targeted his counterspells at storm crow itself.
@thrall8989 жыл бұрын
The typical rule of thumb that I tend to follow is to assume the defending player is targeting all his counterspells on your creature, so you generally need to counter his spells rather than just play with targeting. That is unless they say "Counter your x" referring to my counterspells.
@5ubbak9 жыл бұрын
thrall898 But that's not the rule in tournaments. Unless a player specifically says so, counterspells are assumed to target the topmost spell in the stack (i.e. last spell cast). That's why it's important to be clear.
@Actiomedey9 жыл бұрын
Actually, if its target went away, swan song would fizzle, as would pact, meaning it doesn't resolve and the cost isn't required.
@jonathantang95169 жыл бұрын
I don't think you understand what I was saying. Using the default assumption that the target is the closest on the stack, the only necessary deviation to make pact resolve is for the first FoW to target spell snare (or basically any previous counterpell that isn't swan song or pact)
