This is probably so far the best motorcycle accident avoidance video I've seen. After watching this I see thing in my own riding I need to change. As I'm not riding a scooter but something that about 500lbs heavier than a scooter.

Great instructional videos, Ken. Your explanation, that 'crash-avoidance space takes mental-maturity,' is so well founded. I wish such simple, yet effective 'informative instruction,' prior to obtaining a drivers' licence, was made mandatory here (Oregon).

Excellent video and mirrors some of the new Vicroads Cycle education program for a Learner's permit. Apparently other states are looking at adopting similar training in the hope of reducing the mortality rate for novice riders.

I rode motorcycles for years however I am older now and I was looking for an inexpensive mode of transportation. I settled on a 150cc motor scooter. The other week I ran into a serious situation, gusting strong wind. A wind strong enough to make light items like leaves and paper products fly through the air as if they were short out of a cannon. I was traveling around 40+ M P H when the wind hit me from the right side. I leaned my weight to the right to offset the force of the wind gust. Well long story short I ended up squirreling down the road. Any advice on how to deal with strong wind gust? Now when it is windy I drive slow at thirty miles per hour to my right as if I was riding a bicycle or moped.

"Large witches hats." This video is awesome and extremely informative, but secondarily speaking... is that what Australians call cones?

I think 5 a second gap is a little excessive. The car in front of you will decelerate as well and not stop instantly. Also the time and distance you need to stop is exponentially related to your speed which means if you go twice as fast it will take 4 times as long to stop. If anyone is interested in the physics behind this here is why: Energy = 1/2 * Mass * Velocity * Velocity Energy = Force * Distance --> Distance = Energy / Force Distance = ( 1/2 * Mass * Velocity^2) / Force Keep in mind that this is only the distance you travel once you start breaking. Force is the friction applied from the breaks. The travelled distance during reaction time is: Distance = Time(in seconds) * Velocity(in m/s) Based on this the final formula including reaction time and breaking is: Distance = (1.5s * Velocity) + (1/2 * Mass * Velocity^2) / Force

This is in no way a cretic of your informative video, I am just trying to learn. I tend to just break as soon as possible, whiteout thinking about them behind me, If I have to stop in an emergency, then I have to stop, no matter what is behind me, so the time used at looking in the mirror, could be the difference between stopping and crashing, or am I wrong? An other ting is that I do always levee minimum 5 second space between me and them driver in front, since that a crashes in front of me, can result in that the vehicle can be thrown back towards me, so that the time is reduced drastic. Can you please give me some pointers of your thought's? :-)
